This post and messages freak me out because I’m getting confused what the input and output is.

Please everyone, can you make sure your posts are edited in a way to avoid any confusions.

My “opinion” is that this is not as impressive as most people think it is once you understand the (really) huge amounts of text the system ingests for the algorithms to extract the output. There is no magic.

Donckele··on Four Eras of JavaScript Frameworks
Your last paragraph is not a logical conclusion to your first two paragraph statements.
Donckele··on WebP is such a goated format
OT but I just hate that firefox converts images to webp by default. The downloaded file is NOT whats at that URL. Having another format to deal with and not well supported is super annoying. I tried once to disable this in the “advanced settings” but it broke something and had to revert. Please have a simple checkbox in the standard settings page and have it disabled by default!

Leaf blowing to the other side and then another leaf blower needed to blow it back.

Madness.

Donckele··on Windows needs a change in priorities
Some weeks ago I resolved issues, for a friend, with searching for files or emails within outlook.

The results for searches firstly did not make sense, some files/emails found but most not.

I resolved the indexing of files by finally finding the right settings page after some time. The only feedback that I had done the right thing was seeing the “number of files indexed” incrementing.

For outlook, I was expecting some settings page within the app that would explain why emails were not being found. After some more time I found that the settings page was outside of outlook! I cannot remember where or how I fixed the issue but it was complete bullshit.

Every once in a while I have these experiences and and wonder how most people live with their computers and the amount of stress and time wasted on stuff that you would expect not to have to deal with in 2022.

Even though I have a soft spot for Microsoft, I abandoned their flagship product, the operating system, many years ago and was probably one of my wisest choices.

Just like I don’t use Google’s flagship product - I just hate it when companies ruin something near perfect by adding shit to please everyone or to milk it so much for profit that it becomes just a pile of trash.

Donckele··on A gossip-style failure detection service (2009) [pdf]
Hey! Interesting work you are doing with your Adama Lang and the ideas are fantastic.

My only criticism is that it is being bogged down by the implementation language (java) and the academic details (gossip, blockchain, etc.) that is slowing it down to become an MVP.

Of course, I know you are doing this for fun and these details give you immense joy but some of us would love to start using it and start playing boardgames and even create some of our own!

Anyway, good work and thanks for writing up articles with your experiences.

Donckele··on Ask HN: Why do new browsers use Chromium instead of Firefox as their base?
I’m calling bullshit to most of the comments here and to Mozilla.

First, why cannot we have a multi-platform single click, no chrome/ui with fullscreen capabilities, firefox launcher that has prepackaged web app that is self contained? You think Major Tech Dudes can’t implement this?

Second, it’s all probably to do with bureaucracy and politics. For all we know FAANG blocks such ad ventures otherwise its bully time.

Donckele··on Browse the web like its 1999
You can also say this of software in general including operating systems.

Sure, the hardware and network are a miracle.

My 2 cents is that there is so much software to be written that most programmers are mediocre at what they do and/or their working environment makes it even more difficult to create efficient software systems.

Similar correlations to Government.

Donckele··on Ask HN: I've lost faith in myself as a developer, how do I get it back?

Donckele··on ATX-80 – ZX-80 computer clone with ATmega8 processor
I sense that more projects will come where similar microcontrollers will be simulating the machines from the 8-bit golden age. I wish I had the time to do it but I can’t wait for someone to do a tandy color computer/dragon32/zx spectrum/bbc/c64/etc. running on an off the shelf cheap adafruit/sparkfun/arduino board.

Donckele··on Processing and P5 got newbies into coding
The environments you mention have different mechanics and a steeper learning curve. Also, my opinion, less programmer friendly - its for those who want to connect stuff together rather than write code. They usually produce not very dynamic experiences that feel very similar and mainstream.
Donckele··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time
“ - The faster runtime speed in no way made up for any of the above. Bad Svelte code is still slow compared to good React code.”

What? Can you expand on that? Makes no sense.

Donckele··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time
Yes, it is good. In many ways I hope it doesn’t catch up to React - it’s running a different journey which I also prefer.
Donckele··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time
Great news for everyone using Svelte - a good move by Vercel and wish Rich gets more resources and freedom to continue the refinement of Svelte.
