DocG··on Searching for 'VK' shows only a single result on DuckduckGo. Why?
One thing I didnt think if when moved to ddg, is it's almost unusable in smaller languages and local stuff for smaller country..

Now I revert to Google for local and programming. It seems to me tho that the worse Google gets the better ddg gets.

But still beats having AMP, that was last straw for me.

DocG··on Scientists rename human genes to stop MS Excel from misreading them as dates
Because it's meant for human consumption. Day and month is usually relevant, while year is less so, so let's put it last.
DocG··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
Uh, I do similar thing. I use narrated let's plays or podcasts on YouTube to go to sleep in the evening and YouTube knows this. It knows my habits so much that even not to recommend stuff I listen every evening, durning daytime. Only when I open my phone in the evening reccomendations are suddenly full of stuff I want to listen to get to sleep.

I use YouTube bc it autostops playing and turns phone off when I'm already sleeping. And funnily enough, ads help me start sleeping faster :D

DocG··on Using human brain tissue in lab, researchers show herpes link to Alzheimer’s
I'm I EU if that matters and as far as I know, I have no sideffects. I was supposed to be healthy for both shots, that was the only requirement.

Why I'm sharing this information usually, because there are people out for who herpes is not annoyance but life disrupting virus. They often do not even know that there are antiviral drugs out there that work really well. They do think that there isn't much to do other than to suffer because when they were young or had bad doctor who said "oh everyone has it". My hope is maybe some people might go back to their doctor and say "please, it's disrupts my life" and they get appropriate treatment.

DocG··on Using human brain tissue in lab, researchers show herpes link to Alzheimer’s
I've had outbreaks but they were way less severe after that.

I'm under 30. This recommendation came from doctor who specializes in herpes. She did warn me it might not work, but she has seen overall good results -outbreaks are less severe, rarer, or dissapear altogether.

I think it's been around five years.

There was a paper also on that, but couldn't find.

DocG··on Using human brain tissue in lab, researchers show herpes link to Alzheimer’s
There is correlation between zoster vaccine and herpes simplex.

This has correlation to lesser the outbreaks or make them stop altogether. I can attest to that.

This is what some specialist doctors recommend for patient with bad herpes outbreaks.

I guess this would be already good starting point.

DocG··on A look at modern PHP
Yes it matters. This is often unessecary maintenance overhead.
DocG··on Research on the benefits of “weak ties” – connecting with casual acquaintances
In the last couple of years I've thought a lot that I'm really happy that I changed schools after ninth grade and also repeated class in high school. I'm not too outgoing person, but because of these things I have so broad connection basis with people who I know on name basis. And this helps, whenever I need to do business or just encounters, it is so much easier when you know the person ten years already by name.

I would say this repeating class was highly positive for me, and way more impactful than grades ever were in the long term.

DocG··on Layoffs Are Coming
I am not sure if I'm lucky or unlucky - I recently, meaning 15 days ago quit my job. It was a decision prepared well in advance.

I'm glad because I am mentally prepared to not work for quite a while with okayish amount of savings. I'm sad because this means all my own business plans, that I prepared my savings for, are on hold.

Im still not sure is it better to go through resection with no work but with savings or just work through it.

DocG··on Vitamin D deficiency worsens Respiratory Tract Infections: Meta-analysis
Absolutely, not only respiratory but all the illnesses. It affects your immune system. But with cavaets:

- It won't make any effect for around month once you start taking it

- it only has effect if you have serious deficiency.

I used to be sick really easily for years, always tired. Finally got doctor to make blood tests and if normal level 100, min is 60, then my vitamin D levels were 12. Ofcourse my body immune system struggled. After started with suppliments got more energy, got less often sick. Felt like a normal person.

There is also other extreme, taking too many will have negative effect. I've experienced them myself.

I do live in a northern climate (imagine Finland) with long dark winters and only sun time is spend in the office.

DocG··on Covid-19 precautions for Stripe employees and customers
This is mentality issue, what we found when we dropped some people into remote work. They didn't link themselves up that they are now responsible for their workplace and not employer.

It is solvable, with active management and active workers, but these are the things we found that needed to be addressed.

DocG··on Covid-19 precautions for Stripe employees and customers
We had recently experiment in remote working for two months. I've been doing this one-off for couple of years but I was living with other people who were doing it first time. If you throw normal office workers into remote work situation, without guidance and active management this is what we found:

- if there is local issue stopping work(no electricity for example), it is taken as a chance not to work, instead of solving this issue with the best of their capabilities(keep you batteries charged, go to a cafe etc). When working remotely, it is now workers responsibility to create a work environment.

- all the problems are relayed to the manager, but not the good things or done work. This creates a negative image together with next.

- they rather even avoid regular communication, than try to go extra mile with communicating while working because it is hard and out of they comfort zone.

- discipline to regular working is hard specially in the beginning. This impacts work.

DocG··on Surgeon general urges public to stop buying face masks amid coronavirus outbreak
Mostly it doesn't matter for normal people - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22456037

I think the main benefit might come from mask that you stop touching your face. But for that you don't need fancy mask..

DocG··on A two-person startup already uses twenty-eight other tools
Company I work for has grown to 10 people and the pricing per member things are getting out of hand. We had to drop some services, bc if there is a service that costs 10 per user for just one feature, it's they add up real quick (looking at you slack for example).

Some services have free tier or special pricing if it's only couple of members, but once you exhaust that, you are dropped to full pricing. I think there is a opportunity for different pricing for growing companies between 5-25 people.

It seems that this pay per member works for small companies, couple of people or huge ones. But if you are growing with limited revenue the costs are way too high while you are still also finding your market.

DocG··on Citroën introduces a two-seat EV that costs €2,644 and then €19.99 a month
This vehicle seems to be made specially to be under 45km/h limit to not be a car and be a four wheel "scooter" class. In my country (in Europe) they don't have technical inspection, insurance is way cheaper and if born before '91, you don't need any license or don't need full license.

I assume the there are also less requirements from manufacture side, that makes it easier and cheaper to produce.

If it would be 60km/h you can not make it at this price point, because you are making a full car. And then there is no reason to limit it at all. They are already popular here, where I live and are much similarly priced or even higher because of the lesser requirements for getting around.

I can see it as perfect second car for city in my hometown and would buy it.

DocG··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
I can understand your point, but I think that is not going to be the case. As I understood, these viruses like mild climates. All souther countries are safer, in a way that virus can't survive for too long. And soon when the summer heat will reach China, the virus will whither there also.

First thought I had - how effective it can be cooling the street down.

Reminds the water walls they use to cool air down.

DocG··on Why I Procrastinate (2019)
But then you want to go to sleep and your mind keeps making these things up and you can't go to sleep for hours at time until you are just so exhausted that it takes over after three hours laying in bed....

I'm coping by putting podcasts on almost audible levels when going to sleep, otherwise there would be no sleep. This helps to distract the mind just enough to pass out. But lately it's working worse and worse....

DocG··on Why I Procrastinate (2019)
I haven't resonated with any article so much before as with this. I literally quit my job, because of these reasons.

I'll sign myself up for a therapist now. Thanks.

DocG··on How to Make a Raspberry Pi VPN Server
We are using this at the office. We and our clients often use IP restriction to servers as first line defense, so Pi in the office lets us access office static IP while outside.

This has helped tremendously and is super easy to set up.

Bonus is while traveling we can access services without firewalls from our home country and everyone sees us as "still in the office". This includes clients, government, banks, etc. Additionally while using it we are not detected to be using VPN so far.

DocG··on Algorithm Removes Water from Underwater Images

DocG··on I killed my teenager’s fancy college dreams
Uh, school is more than education, specially in art, and more about connections.

For 40k I would consider three years abroad. I think this would cover cost in a good university in Europe. This would give invaluable experience living abroad, give top class education and probably be within budget.

DocG··on Apple News No Longer Supports RSS
It asks first time - do you want to open it and should it remember your choice. Later you can set default in android settings or remove the yt app default setting.

It's buried in there somewhere.

DocG··on I asked my students to turn in their cell phones and write about it
Seems about right. I did a self test on myself, leaving phone at home for the work whole week. No other restrictions, this worked great. It had the benefit of still using phone whenever I needed it, not missing interaction but having much more concentration while doing work related tasks and forced reasonable amount of self reflection time while in transit.

For permanent basis I would request work dumb-phone from employer, that will stay on my office desk.

Other than that, a lot of anxety related to phone got removed once the phone is on permanent silent, all unknown numbers are blocked silently, notifications are limited. Phone is for people who I want to interact when I can.

DocG··on Windows 10 Desktop: Physically building and photographing the logos (2015)
It's more so for the creative process. In my experience result is always better, more detailed when it has to go through progess and is built up. Rarely artist has "final image" in his mind when they start.

Sure, you could recreate this in GCI but it would be way harder to come up with the design in the first place.

I would also consider, any GCI artist could recreate this in 3D, but few could create it from scratch. If we consider that there was an good artist hired to do this piece, then it will be up to artist to choose his/her medium and you are critizing choice of artist or saying artist how to do his creative process and it is not about real vs GCI anymore.

Creating stuff from scratch is really really hard, it is always better to combine and build on things. The final product will look more original, detailed and overall better.

Art is messy, not optimized process.

DocG··on An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads?
Oh damn, old is so high. I thought the old would be lower than new.

I guess I shouldn't be so afraid of old going away soon then :)

I'm using old Reddit, on mobile.

DocG··on An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads?
That will be sad day. If old.reddit.com goes, so do I.

I use Reddit mainly on phone, via browser because I use tabs and old.reddit.com because its the most content dense view and and is the fastest view (no stupid js loading icon thankyou). I'm not there, like I'm not here, for the design. I'm visiting for the content.

Reddit.com front page takes about three seconds to load with stupid blocking js, old takes about second before I can start consuming. Apps are no better.

DocG··on The Rise of 'Facadism' in London
Oh my god these are ugly.

I expected samples how new is incorporated into old but this free standing facade is just plain ugly. Most of the houses seem to be built so at X moment they can just tear the facade down, because it now looks ugly.

I personally would prefer incorporating new with old. Keep the old facade, but it should be part of the house and working with the overall architecture.

DocG··on Builders Ditch Nest After Google Ties Devices to Digital Assistant
I don't trust technology companies to mess up updating apps, removing features or breaking working functionality, sure as hell as I don't trust them with something permanently in my wall. Oh sorry, we decided to end the support for this product because there weren't any users. No, you can't use it offline. Buy a new one, break your walls every three years etc.

Maybe, maybe companies who produce industrial equipment, and know what it takes to have something work for 20 years non stop. DOS based CNC machines etc.
