Diamons··on If Doctors Learned to Cook, They Might Give Better Advice
There's plenty of science showing that people with different gut bacteria can lose / gain weight while eating the same amount of calories.
Diamons··on Facebook is misleading Indians with its full-page ads about Free Basics
You are arguing that an ad hominem attack is by defacto incorrect. Ad hominem attacks provide context and explain how your point of view can be clouded or misguided.

Ad hominem attacks have been and always will be useful tools in debates.

Example: If you are rich and believe that the poor are lazy and always asking for handouts, it would be beneficial for someone to make an ad hominem attack towards your character and background as a wealthy person to help you see why your statements are biased.

Diamons··on Show HN: Scaffold App for Node.js, Express, Jade, Passport, MongoDB, Bootstrap
What does Mongo have to do with Javascript, and why is querying a DB with javascript a bad idea? What language you query a DB in should have no impact.
Diamons··on Obama Signs CISA Bill into Law
Unregulated free market theory works. When you say it's instantly distorted by reality, I think that's true if you take a small picture view of the world. But if you look at it from a 5 year, 10 year, or even 100 year perspective, the free market is what brought us Dialup, DSL, Cable, FiOS, WiFi and whatever's after WiFi. I think the free market has done a great job.
Diamons··on How Jefferson and other Founding Fathers defended Muslim rights
I am not 100% against abortion, especially when it comes to the health of the mother. I still think it's barbaric but it's the best option we have with the technology and treatments available. However I am against unregulated abortions. If an abortion is to be done, it must be under the guidance and consultation of a medical doctor.
Diamons··on How Jefferson and other Founding Fathers defended Muslim rights
Just like we know that abortion and death penalty are immoral. Future generations will look back at us and look at us as barbarians.
Diamons··on PHP 7 Released
I won't argue that the language makes the framework popular. But if Wordpress serves 25% of the entire web, Facebook serves 1/7th of the entire world population every single day, and 500M people visit Wikipedia a month, clearly something about PHP works. Perhaps it attracts a certain kind of personality that gets things done, or perhaps its flexibility is what makes it successful, but to call the most influential programming language of this generation pig guts is willful ignorance.
Diamons··on Ask HN: Client wants contract enforcement in their state. Red flag?
You can politely say no and explain why. You have many clients and can't account for all the laws in each state, you'd rather deal with local laws you are familiar with and certainly abide by.

Furthermore, you can also show past works, references, etc. to support that point and convey that you like to stand by your word. Writing a contract where you're not fully familiar with the laws of the state means it makes it harder to deliver the work and experience you are known for.

When they say they want to amend the contract, what they are really saying is that they feel uncertain about certain things and feel there's a higher level of risk.

And at the very end of the day if they still insist on the changes, tell them you're willing to do that and explain to them that you will need to change the quote because of the extra legal fees.

Who cares about the coding language when the market is telling you otherwise? Isn't that the very essence of starting a startup, YCombinator, the whole Silicon Valley mantra? Listen to your customers.

The customers are telling you PHP is preferred to other languages and is here to stay as evidenced by 25% of the web using a single PHP application as the backend.

Diamons··on PHP 7 Released
The numbers tell a different story. Wordpress powers 25% of the entire web. That is a quarter of the entire internet. It's pretty much your opinion vs the entire internet.

You can see how your opinions come off as ludicrous ?

Side question, does anyone actually enjoy running a VPS? Between managing the sites on it, you have to maintain the VPS, keep it up to date, its prone to security bugs and flaws, etc. Am I missing something here? I remember setting up multiple VPSes on Linode / DO and it was always a painful process of installing the OS, installing the whole stack, configuring everything, setting up users / roles, firewalls, etc.

On top of that, whereas on a shared host i click a button and host a second domain, with a VPS I have to SSH in and manually edit server files.

But everyone always recommends running a VPS so I can't help but imagine I've either missed some magical tool that makes running a VPS a snap or it's just not a realistic solution for most people.

Diamons··on The High Price of Delivery App Convenience
In this case she saw the $113 charge for three orders of cheeseburgers and fries and didn't think twice about it. To her that price seemed logical.
Diamons··on The High Price of Delivery App Convenience
"Brooke Hammerling, a tech start-up publicist based in New York, recently paid $113 to Postmates for three orders of cheeseburgers and fries on a rainy day.

It turned out, after Postmates investigated the order, that the courier had punched in the incorrect price for the food, which should have been $39.78. The company issued a refund for the difference.

“I should’ve known they weren’t showing the actual prices,” Ms. Hammerling said. "

That pretty much summarizes the customers of these apps.

Diamons··on Top 1% now owns more of the wealth than the remaining 99%
Everyone thinks that until it's too late.
Diamons··on Top 1% now owns more of the wealth than the remaining 99%
The wealth distribution is remarkably skewed. Today it might not mean anything but give it a few years of people having no money yet having bills, loans, mortgages, etc. to pay with no possibility of retirement and you have yourself a prime situation for another French revolution or oppressive police state.

It's not something that you can just let sit, it's going to get bloody if it is not addressed soon. We have seen this everytime in history. It is not possible to sustain such levels of income inequality.

You're struggling with some strong cognitive dissonance there. It is well known we are in a bubble. Everyone but Silicon Valley knows it.

Diamons··on A New Golden Age Part III: The Basic Income Guarantee
I've heard this many times before and I've even been taught this in history class. What is the reason for this?

The explanation is often that it stimulates the economy, but really, is war effective at fixing the economy because it just acts as a giant reset button? If there's too many workers and not enough job, the easiest way to fix that problem is to kill X% of the population, and what better easier and cleaner way to sell this to the American people than your country is under attack and it needs your sacrifice?

Diamons··on Show HN: Coffee Test – Quality, on-demand in-person user testing of your app
One piece of feedback -- I know what Slack is but never created a bot / user before. In the first step where it says to create a bot large, I wasn't sure what that meant or how to do it. A quick GIF or video showing the process might increase your conversion.

You're not wrong, and we should also consider that the attacker stopped and didn't go on a rampage at which point the 2nd amendment really becomes useful.

Let's not forget that there is a reason your 1st amendment right is directly followed by the 2nd amendment.
