DevoidSimo··on What Is the Future of the DAW?
I'd imagine that it's because the DJs ask people to vote for them. A lot of the DJs I follow do that every year. If the big commercial DJs with the biggest following do that, then they would naturally land at the top.
DevoidSimo··on Google Camera randomly changes some QR code URLs on Android 12
I have a pixel 6 pro, the assistant immediately crashes if I try to use it. Has been like that for months. One would think google would prioritise that feature for bug fixes.

Also a tip, if you're taking this at night time and use flux/night light, turn that off before you start.
DevoidSimo··on Big Tech Coding Interview Framework – Pt 1. Inspect
Asking clarifying questions is a pretty key part of software development. You get a loose requirement the system must do X, you then need to drill into all the details. For this reason I think lots of these coding problems are deliberately under-specified.
DevoidSimo··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
Is it impurities in meth that give you psychosis? I was of the impression that often it was due to sleep deprivation due to being on meth and not sleeping for days.
DevoidSimo··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
Adding another one, my Sennheiser PXC 550 (both original and II) will charge and do bluetooth or wired audio.
DevoidSimo··on Update about the October 4th outage
Do you have the facebook container extension? That closes the current tab, opens a new tab with a container, then goes to the facebook link. Reopening the last closed tab works for me, although I haven't noticed this before since I always open links in a new tab.
DevoidSimo··on Chip shortage leads carmaker Opel to shut German plant until 2022
I've driven my car with only enough battery to really power the spark plugs and instruments in the dash (alternator failed and I got jump started). It was manageable even with the heavy steering, although to be fair I was driving max 50kph. Perhaps braking at highway speeds would be challenging.

I also much prefer my phone navigation over the in car system (Android Auto/Apple Carplay would solve this). That said, I wouldn't buy the car GP is suggesting, but I could imagine that if you were price sensitive then you might.

No comment around the older systems, I don't really have the knowledge to agree or disagree there.

DevoidSimo··on The reason you’re not more productive at work? It’s not boredom, it’s bad UX
One of my friends works at Atlassian (not on JIRA). Apparently they do use JIRA there. Presumably things which are not performance are prioritised higher.
DevoidSimo··on Apple explicitly asks employees to merge their personal and work accounts
At least on android (maybe not used at apple?) there are work profiles. You install all the work stuff there, and that partition can be remotely wiped. All of your personal stuff is kept segregated. It's also nice that you can turn off the work profile during weekends and holidays so that you don't get work notifications.
DevoidSimo··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
I think I heard (possibly here) that Netflix actually does stop billing inactive accounts. Never tested that myself though, and the time before being considered inactive may be longer than 1 month.
DevoidSimo··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
The longest time I've worked overseas for was 3 months, so it's probably different to your experience. But I found the different content to be good. I had a whole new selection of shows and movies to watch since aside from the originals the content is pretty different between countries.
DevoidSimo··on We Still Don’t Get Things Done
Interesting to see this exists, I wrote a similar thing for myself which acts like a personal diary. As well as helping with reflection, it's really useful come performance review time. Answering "what did I do this past (year/X months)" becomes just reading the entries you've logged.

Much easier than reading git history, and trying to remember other items that aren't in source control.

DevoidSimo··on Amazon tells bosses to conceal when employees are on performance management plan
I find this vesting schedule being brought up strange (I see this somewhat frequently). On hiring you get a signing bonus, in my case the value of this bonus made my comp almost flat for those 4 years if the share price remained constant. If anything, this additional cash, which was given each month, was a positive when starting out. Vesting is inherently lumpy, and makes managing cash flow a bit more tricky. I also received base increases despite a very large stock price increase.

On 401k, I'm not in the US so cannot comment.

Your other points around timelines and pages don't match my experience, but I assume that in such a large company they do exist. I have certainly heard of a team where the high sev counts were similar to the numbers you give. Perhaps I am lucky to have missed them, or others are unlucky to have experienced them.

DevoidSimo··on Hacker reveals smart meters are spilling secrets about the Texas snowstorm
I worked with a power company in New Zealand that had load shedding like this (although more for water heaters IIRC). They transmitted signals on the power lines themselves at a much higher frequency than the AC delivery. The end devices also needed to support it.
DevoidSimo··on DevSkiller IT skills report 2021: Demand and hiring trends
Plus, you can get great money working at one of the FAANGs that are here. It's not quite at the level of the US, but higher than the companies the GP was referring to from what I've heard of their comp.
DevoidSimo··on Numi – Calculator app for Mac
Mainly the fact it's extensible. If you have something you do commonly do you can set up a shortcut for it. I use it a lot at work for quickly jumping to specific pages of internal websites, or converting hex codes to decimal. It also replaces spotlight.

Some examples that you can just install without writing your own: https://www.alfredapp.com/workflows/

DevoidSimo··on Duolingo's language notes all on one page
They are easy to miss, I had them pointed out to me when complaining about no formal instruction in the app.

DevoidSimo··on Raspberry Pi for Kill Mosquitoes by Laser
The problem with blinding pilots is actually reflections off clouds, which is not really intuitive.
DevoidSimo··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
What's to stop you doing all these commits locally with uninformative messages, then squashing them when you push/PR with a better message?
DevoidSimo··on Smart spaces will fine petrol car owners illegally parking in electric bays
There are no traffic lights for the ones I've seen here, so you can just set your cruise control. I would be doing this anyway on a long drive, which again is the only place I've seen these
DevoidSimo··on AirPods Max
In fact the only bluetooth issue I've had with my Sennheisers is that the bluetooth driver in my mac will crash most days. Requiring a restart.
DevoidSimo··on The Sad Story of Mozilla Keeps Getting Sadder
That and tree style tabs. I don't think I could go back to the mess of tabs in the top bar
DevoidSimo··on Cameras and secret trackers reveal where Amazon returns end up
In Australia, we have multiple stores that advertise free returns and include a return shipping bag. The whole idea is that you can return things that don't fit.

I'd assume similar services exist in other places, and the clothes may be sent to multiple customers.

DevoidSimo··on Proposed EU rule may mean you can finally delete some apps from your phone
One poster mentioned ADB, but another quicker way is to disable the app. It still uses storage, but can't start. If you do this early on, or after downgrading, then the phone can remain like new. Did this a lot on a phone I had 5+ years ago, shame it needs to be done though.
DevoidSimo··on Microsoft 365 Outage
You used to be able to get keys for all windows software through an MSDN account. No idea if that's still the case, would have been around 2017 last time I had one.
DevoidSimo··on Uber backup driver indicted in 2018 self-driving crash that killed woman
From what I remember the person that was hit was fairly visible. The video uber released was very dark however, giving that impression.
DevoidSimo··on Ketamine that's injected during arrests draws new scrutiny
As other people have said, preparation is a big part of enjoying it. Any hallucinogens without knowing what to expect would be scary.
DevoidSimo··on Court ruling clears way for energy storage on the grid
Working with some power companies in Australasia, I found out there are actually water heaters which receive a signal over the power lines to turn off and on. You would make an agreement with the power company for a lower rate, and a total amount of hours on per day (plus more details). The power company would then schedule your water heater in off peak times.

This was more of a method of managing peak load, however, still seems applicable.

It's used in Vittoria mountain bike tyres apparently. No idea how many they sell, so may not be mass produced as such.
