DevoidSimo··on Moving from TypeScript to Rust / WebAssembly
Agree here, admittedly I have no prior Ruby experience, but I've inherited a code base in Rails. There is so much magic that goes on implicitly. I end up jumping around everywhere to see why something unexpected is happening.
DevoidSimo··on Invasive, secretive “bossware” tracking workers
Exactly, it's also an interesting perspective in that while some people may not care about the privacy of their employees, they probably care about lawsuits and their bottom line.
DevoidSimo··on Show HN: Query 1.6B rows in milliseconds, live
Interesting, I tried to make a query taking a long time using join and got 37.43s:

    SELECT * FROM trips
    JOIN gas_prices ON gas_prices.timestamp = trips.pickup_datetime;
DevoidSimo··on Bose QC 35 Firmware 4.5.2 Noise Cancellation Investigation Report
I'm not sure what those controls are like, but I've got some sennheiser PXC550s. They have a touch pad which is used for controls. All controls are either a tap on a wide area (the whole earpiece) or a swipe. This is both easy to do and intuitive. i.e. up/down for volume, foward/back for track selection. Done well I don't think not having a button is an issue.
DevoidSimo··on Bottlerocket: An operating system designed for hosting containers
Correct, that toml file allows you to build everything from that level, and open editors on that folder with the language server functioning. RLS requires a cargo.toml file in the root of the workspace even if it just points at other directories
DevoidSimo··on PowerShell 7.0
I find it fantastic for running scripts on multiple machines. The invoke-command cmdlet makes it very easy to do this if your computers are a domain or have the same username and password. Credentials can also be supplied but that's more cumbersome.

I find many things to be easier than CMD/bash such as looping or chaining commands. I'd imagine nushell has similar benefits though.

Microsoft products such as Azure and AD are easily administered as well.

DevoidSimo··on Solar farm has to switch off every second day due to negative prices
People do, we have snowy hydro who normally correct these negative prices by pumping water uphill into a dam. They then double dip on profits by generating when the cost is positive. Very profitable operation although the initial infrastructure cost is high.
DevoidSimo··on Applying BERT models to Search
Duck Duck Go seems to handle that much better, although the first result is still about cooling. I assume it's synonym replacement
DevoidSimo··on Google clamps down on free storage
I'm running a program which downloads any new photos to my computer. I'm away from my PC right now but I'm pretty sure it was this: https://github.com/mholt/timeliner
DevoidSimo··on Tesla Software Version 10.0
I rented one once, you can adjust the follow distance for the adaptive cruise control. Annoyingly it resets each time you turn on the car though.
DevoidSimo··on Let's talk about peeing in space
I'd imagine width/circumference is the more important measurement, if it's too long you just have more volume to fill.
DevoidSimo··on U.S. Escalates Online Attacks on Russia’s Power Grid
Not constant, map tiles are downloded and cached. This one could be done manually, the others less so.
DevoidSimo··on U.S. Escalates Online Attacks on Russia’s Power Grid
I work in the industry.

On the electrical distribution side, there are a few things which may need internet connectivity. Getting map tiles for displays; having an externally contracted call center integrate with the outage management; automatic vehicle location (painting crew vehicles on the displays).

Adding to the last point, something that is coming to the industry is read only access to the system from a mobile device. This requires internet or a private network across the bounds of your network.

I don't want to talk too much about company specifics, but typically modern systems will have servers dedicated to only internet related functions. They will be internally firewalled from any servers which could make changes on the network. These systems aren't cheap though, a lot of what we replace is 15-30 years old. As such, it may not be as secure as it could be.

I've mainly talked about distribution. Transmission and generation also have functionality which requires the internet, or at the least a very large private network.

DevoidSimo··on After 15 Years, the Pirate Bay Still Can’t Be Killed
Why do you say subtitles and secondary audio (I assume you mean multiple language tracks) don't work well? I've downloaded files with multiple subtitles and audio tracks, which VLC makes easy to switch between. Admittedly, many/most torrents don't offer these but that doesn't mean they can't.
DevoidSimo··on When Boris Yeltsin Went Grocery Shopping in Clear Lake
They have it better because they got to leave first. Party members had to wait in line for hours. That was my reading of it
DevoidSimo··on For Better Computing, Liberate CPUs from Garbage Collection
He mentions Rc and Arc which I assume is what he means by the 20%. I tend to agree, although I'm not sure how you would get rid of them.
DevoidSimo··on Firefox to add Tor Browser anti-fingerprinting technique called letterboxing
In addition to what other posters have said I noticed it hides timezone so messaging apps had timestamps which looked wrong because it thought I was somewhere else. Haven't used it in a while though so this may have been changed.
DevoidSimo··on Patreon Bars Anti-Feminist for Racist Speech, Inciting Revolt
IIRC someone high up in the daily stormer publicly claimed cloudflare supported their views due to not being taken down. That lead to a decision to stop hosting them which I think is more reasonable than just censorship.
DevoidSimo··on A Programmer's Introduction to Mathematics
Where are you that high school only covers up to precalculus? In Australia (depending on the level) you do multivariate calculus among other things. Perhaps other subjects aren't covered as deeply.
DevoidSimo··on Improving DuckDuckGo
https://www.troyhunt.com/mmm-pi-hole/

A link posted on HN a while ago. Long story short it uses a raspberry pi as a DNS server which blocks all requests for ads.

DevoidSimo··on China Telecom's Internet Traffic Misdirection
It's using ajax to fetch the actual article. Seems a bit strange since it's static
DevoidSimo··on JavaScript is now required to sign in to Google
I browse with 3rd party frames and JS disabled. Not as extreme as all JS so it doesn't break most things. Occasionally I need to whitelist a CDN or related domain for that site to get things working.
DevoidSimo··on Harvard Asian-American discrimination case opens with packed courtroom
Well presumably if they are alumni then they were given a high enough rating to get in so the numbers are skewed. Unless this is alumni from other universities.
DevoidSimo··on 12 Factor CLI Apps
Making things like that persist is done through the powershell profile stored at $profile. It is the equivalent of a ~/.bashrc.
DevoidSimo··on Sweden’s ads ombudsman say “distracted boyfriend” meme is gender discrimination
The image at least does exist, even with the same woman. https://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/309/021/29...
DevoidSimo··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
You shouldn't use windows to access the WSL filesystem, there are several issues with that (which I believe are being worked on). If you want files accessible from both put them in the Windows filesystem. Regarding themes I can't help that much, I have successfully solarized vim though. I needed:

  let g:solarized_termcolors=256
  set term=screen-256color
  set t_ut=
