Derrek··on Bootstrapping Abroad: why we do it and why it's awesome
"If you meet certain requirements, you may qualify for the foreign earned income and foreign housing exclusions and the foreign housing deduction.

If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the United States and you live abroad, you are taxed on your worldwide income. However, you may qualify to exclude from income up to $87,600 of your foreign earnings. In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts."

It's much more complicated than this but that's the jist of it.

Derrek··on Review: Vibram Five Fingers Classic
I'll do 5-mile runs through the city (on sidewalks, streets, grass, whatever) without injury. Sure, it took me a while to get to this distance, but running in these is a true pleasure.

I also do my gym workouts in them too.

Derrek··on Ask HN: Where do you live?
ditto
Derrek··on Ask HN: Recommend a domain-name registrar..
I'm a fan of 1and1.com. They give free private registration, and I haven't had any issues with them over the past couple years of use.
Derrek··on Icon Driven Development on the App Store- how we make $350/day without marketing
Colin, congrats on the success! It's nice to hear an App Store success story instead of the usual bad news.
Derrek··on Apple now bans e-books from the App Store
Good god, when will the madness end?

"Another developer who built an e-book reader received a recent rejection along the same lines. The application might be used to read copyright infringing books, so Apple will not let it in App Store."

But couldn't OS X also be used to play copyright infringing MP3s, software and videos?

Derrek··on Apple now censoring dictionaries in the App Store
Yeah, it's almost like Apple is trying to advertise FOR the Android market.

I've toyed with the idea of developing iPhone apps. But after these last few weeks, I'd be much more inclined to learn the Android API. Sure, the iPhone has a larger user-base right now, but there are dozens of Android handsets scheduled to be released in 2010.

Derrek··on Will android take over iphone?
I completely agree. I look forward to my AT&T contract ending with the hope that the Android phones will have caught up with the iPhone's sexiness. If so, I'll definitely consider an Android handset.
Derrek··on YC Startups Unite to Drive Nail into Coffin of IE6
Awesome! Every bit of pressure helps the world leave behind IE6. Hopefully this effort will increase pressure for corporate installations to upgrade too.
Derrek··on Apple Is Growing Rotten To The Core, And It’s Likely AT&T’s Fault
I agree. Plus, Apple's walled garden approach makes the more open android market a lot more appealing.
Derrek··on The Official Curriculum for Your Degree in Startups
Helpful collection of info. Thanks
Derrek··on Review my startup: vistrac.com
When looking at the pricing page, my first question was, "How exactly does this site calculate a visitor session?" If I visit a site on June 1st and then go back on June 7th is that one Visitor Session or two?

Maybe put an asterisk next to the term Visitor Session and then define how you'll calculate that metric in the paragraphs below.

Derrek··on Redfin Turns Profitable, Real Estate Industry Shudders
I agree
Derrek··on "Official" IPhone tethering from AT&T at $55/month
I really, really hope that the iPhone "officially" opens to other US carriers after the exclusive contract ends.
Derrek··on Introducing the Google Chrome OS
Does anyone have any guesses on how this might be different from Android?
Derrek··on Fit Body, Fit Mind? Your Workout Makes You Smarter
Although the article focuses on exercise for older folks, I have a hunch that it applies to younger people too.
Derrek··on Hi HN. What do you think about my new startup - Karminator.com
My first thought was, "ok, what does this do?" I then tried to figure out the site's purpose based on the limited posts but that wasn't sufficient. I then had to click to the About page. In my opinion, that's way too much thinking to just figure out the purpose of the site. Don't make a user think too much upon the very first time entering the site.

Maybe you could add a small bit of copy under the title briefly describing why the site is there. Or perhaps some catchy slogan that describes the purpose.

Derrek··on Montana city asks for social network logins on job application
I like your enthusiasm for having tech solve societal problems. And I can see your point but, as an incurable optimist, I still have to believe that one person can make a difference. (Yeah, yeah cue the orchestra with inspirational music.) Plus, it's not like the ACLU is one person.

But why not attack the problem from multiple points? Attack with both a legal and technological response.

Derrek··on Ask HN: consultancy, how to?
I second that. Plus, people often subconsciously associate higher rates with better service.
Derrek··on Montana city asks for social network logins on job application
Yeah, this is total BS. It's situations like this that make me consider leaving programming and becoming a lawyer for the ACLU.
Derrek··on Ten Grand Is Buried There (zoom in)
I always use Firefox, but today I went to the contest site with IE8 on Vista. The message said, "But you'll never find it using Windows Internet Explorer 7". MS couldn't even detect their own "best ever" browser. Very sad.
Derrek··on How I Hacked Hacker News (with arc security advisory)
Really? Downmoded because of the comment "awesome! :)"? Pretty harsh.

Derrek··on Ask HN: What Paid Services Do You Use For Your Startup?
I second the request for pros and cons of FPS
Derrek··on Ask HN: What Paid Services Do You Use For Your Startup?
What're your thoughts on FPS? Can you post a link to one of your sites using it? Thanks
Derrek··on Poll: Where are you from?
Me too. Feel free to say hi.
Derrek··on Tell HN: I think I'm quitting my job today
Over there, health care in general is super cheap (compared to the USA), and there are plenty of good hospitals/dentists/etc. in Bangkok. I'd bet they're good and cheap in Phuket too. You could probably even pay cash for services like annual dental and vision checkups.

I've signed up with WorldNomads.com for general accident insurance. I've never gotten sick or hurt so I can't personally vouch for the claim process. However, they're recommended by Lonely Planet and a bunch of other notable travel sites. They're worth checking out.

Also you could check out the Lonely Planet message boards too.

Derrek··on Tell HN: I think I'm quitting my job today
Dude, quit your job and move to Thailand (or some other cheap place) while you work on your web businesses. The cost of living there is super cheap so your daily expenses will be low and your savings will last longer. Plus, you'll get a chance to explore the world. It's not nearly as hard as people think.

Good luck.

Here's a good article that discusses this idea: http://www.expatsoftware.com/articles/2008/05/laid-off-one-t...
