DerArzt··on Ask HN: Do you still own a printer?
Yes! I bought a brother laser printer to use as part of my D&D hobby. I love paper and pencil for D&D to the point that my notes are all printed and staple bound in a digest sized packet for each session.
DerArzt··on Typst 0.15 Contains Multitudes
I still can't recommend Typst enough! I was able to jive with it way easier than LaTex (the markup is lighter, and the user scripting was easier to pickup for me).
DerArzt··on Drug Transparency Bill Stripped of Critical Provisions Ahead of Senate Vote
Correctness isn't the issue, it's that you copy pasted an LLM response in a form for humans. You could have extracted the names you were looking for and posted those, but instead you disrespected future readers by copy pasting slop.
DerArzt··on Drug Transparency Bill Stripped of Critical Provisions Ahead of Senate Vote
Thanks for the slop!
DerArzt··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
Who told you how I work? I thought it was a closely guarded secret?
DerArzt··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Believe it or not, straight to jail.
DerArzt··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
I wish that "just stop having x thoughts" was a thing I could control.
DerArzt··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
At least in the USA, due to the lack of social safety nets I have to disagree. It's very much work or starve. Yeah you can try to change your perspective, but unless your in a privileged situation where you have a safety net (i.e. a wealthy family to support you if things go wrong) then it's difficult to stop thinking about it.
DerArzt··on Building a Wall Lamp from Scratch
Yep, feels nice to work in both mental problems as well as physical ones.
DerArzt··on Renowned NYC Washington Square Park Chess Hustler 'Chichi' Detained by ICE
Rehabilitation has never been the point of jail in the US. Else why would the thirteenth amendment to the US constitution still be on the books?
DerArzt··on Ask HN: What would happen if your company stopped using all AI tomorrow?
Several people would have their incompetence more visible.
DerArzt··on Domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0B birds and 6.3–22.3B mammals annually
Noth America had cats before the Europeans came, just not any in the niche that house cats fill. Think less barn cat more bob cat or mountain lion.
DerArzt··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Even as a devoutember of the church of emacs I couldn't live without the emacs version of which-key [1]

[1] I was going to link to a repo, but I just learned that which-key is included in Emacs out of the box.

DerArzt··on Humor ability reveals intelligence, predicts mating success. Is higher in males
It may be an impossible thing to get funding for, but I would love to see this kind of study done in a matriarchal society and see what the results would look like. I'm not looking to argue with the results here, but I am curious as to how the set up of society (patriarchal vs matriarchal) is affecting the results of the study.
DerArzt··on Anger, Anxiety and Agency
So much of the drudgery in my day to day is dealing with corporate red tape and ensuring my team is producing the right thing. LLMs don't help much in that regard.

The hard part (where I work) was never the code, it was all of the other BS that needs done (a lot of which happens in crusty old systems that look like they're from the mid 2000's)

DerArzt··on The August 17 outage
I wish I had say in our git forge decisions at work, but I don't and I can either tolerate this or quit my job. So I will continue to disparage one of the world's biggest tech companies not being able to manage GitHub properly.
DerArzt··on Remote work benefits are much bigger than a paycheck
I did a cost analysis when my work had our RTO mandate (minimum 3days in office). I can easily believe these numbers based on what I was able to calculate for myself (taking into account no salary adjustment for going 100% remote to having a 30 min commute each way, new fuel spending, extra maintenance for the car, dealing with house hold costs like daycare).
DerArzt··on Universal Health Coverage Could Save $1T and 114k Lives a Year, Yale Study
From a retirement standpoint I keep hearing that not enough Americans are saving for retirement, so this would still be a win for me.
DerArzt··on The president's second term has involved pardoning more than 1,800 criminals
They can both be awful. Disliking one doesn't endorse the other.
DerArzt··on Why is the GitHub trending page weirdly excluding DeepSeek projects?
Tin foil hat time:

Why would it be in Microsoft's, the owner of GitHub, interest to promote a competitor to Copilot on one of the largest developer platforms on the planet?

DerArzt··on Interview questions assume candidates can afford Claude Code Max
To get a job: Step 1: already have a job that pays you enough to afford LLMs Step 2: ? Step 3: profit
DerArzt··on A tycoon game where you run an AI company
A game about running an AI company used AI in the creation of the game. I'm shocked I say, shocked!
DerArzt··on Ask HN: Why Connected Home Appliances?
Eh, just set a timer on your phone that matches what the display on the machine shows. It may not be an exact match, but it will get the job done for free.
DerArzt··on Tiny data centre used to heat public swimming pool
I recently watched a short video by Matt Ferrell going over the R&D for an electric generator that does just that [1].

DerArzt··on Tidal AI Policy
Also they aren't paying out for AI generated content.
DerArzt··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
NGL I like modern Angular more than React, but I never experienced v1 of AngularJS so I don't know how much of modern Angular is influenced by React.

I like that it's a framework with opinions vs React which is a "Library".

DerArzt··on A dead simple personal website engine for developers focused on simplicity
How is this "dead simple" engine simpler than creating a HTML file and hosting that on a webserver? I couldn't find an explanation of why this is "dead simple".

DerArzt··on Police sue Trump as Jan. 6 rioters gloat over 'weaponization' fund
Not our faces! /S

But seriously I'm glad that there is already cases being brought about this.
