DerArzt··on DuckDB 1.5.0
Once again, I cry for what I don't have in SQL Server. Range types look cool!
DerArzt··on It's time for open source to retire
No, I don't think I will.
DerArzt··on Show HN: We want to displace Notion with collaborative Markdown files
I'm not understanding the value here. If I'm writing markdown and avoiding notion, what does this provide my team that git does not?

I can easily write the markdown docs and they will render fin in most git forges.

DerArzt··on Specs Should Be Equations, Not Essays
Specs for who though? For other engineers that could work, but specs are the interface between business and engineering when agreeing on work.

I doubt that my PM is going to like equations.

DerArzt··on Ask HN: Orbis. Your AI Co-Founder (Waitlist Open)
In the age of LLMs where doing the building is automated ideas are what are valuable.

Why would a founder use your tool and give it their ideas for you to consume (and possibly pull an Amazon and snipe the best ones)?

DerArzt··on Trump orders agencies to identify and release government files on aliens
Now that's what I call a distraction from the Epstein files!
DerArzt··on Accenture 'links staff promotions to use of AI tools'
I can't say I'm surprised. If your business model is based on shipping features (and ignoring quality) then forcing staff to use LLMs makes business sense.

That said this is saddening.

DerArzt··on Show HN: I wrote a technical history book on Lisp
It's more likely that they focused on the book's content rather than the cover art for 5 years
DerArzt··on Amazon Wins $6M in Damages Against Pirated DVD Stores, Plus Domain Takeovers
It's called out that some of the titles being pirated don't get sold as DVDs by Amazon. I have to wonder, how then can I legally own that media ever? if I can't as they won't sell it to me, isn't to that a problem?
DerArzt··on Why does aluminum foil have one shiny side and one with a matte finish?
> microwave or conventional oven

I worry for you if you're microwaving aluminum foil.

DerArzt··on Show HN: JeffTube
I appreciate this, but I don't think I can stomach looking through it.
DerArzt··on Launch HN: Livedocs (YC W22) – An AI-native notebook for data analysis
Yeah, chaos isn't what I want around my data tools. Opposite actually.
DerArzt··on Fluorite – A console-grade game engine fully integrated with Flutter
If they are feeling it, the worst scenario has happened.
DerArzt··on GitHub is down again
I'm so confused by what they think using copilot to either find/build an emulator for a 50 year old machine that can run Basic demonstrates.
DerArzt··on Startup founder behind San Francisco pro-billionaire rally
> Kauffman, who recently left his tech job, has since been completely occupied with organizing Saturday’s march. He said he expected dozens to join him.

Getting a little to Arrested Development for me.

DerArzt··on Microsoft account bugs locked me out of Notepad – Are thin clients ruining PCs?
It also should be on your employer to provide a compatible device (especially when it's your personal device that's not secure enough for the business)
DerArzt··on AI fatigue is real and nobody talks about it
Sometimes a job is a job.
DerArzt··on When Bad UI Design Kills: China Bans Flush Car Door Handles
Yeah, not gonna be sad about that. I've always wondered how well those handles stand up to consistent below freezing temps (with some snow & sleet mixed in).
DerArzt··on CISA gives federal agencies one year to rip out end-of-life devices
I can't imagine this going well. How many government PCs are still running xp, let alone all of the other old tech that the government hasn't had the budget to replace.
DerArzt··on Flock CEO calls Deflock a “terrorist organization” (2025) [video]
Please don't give them ideas like that, even in jest.
DerArzt··on A real-world benchmark for AI code review
Not even, there are some months where I make 30+ prs at work (no llms, just a lot of code responsibilities).
DerArzt··on Coding assistants are solving the wrong problem
I'm going disagree with you. My assets don't wake me up at 3am when they stop working....the best software is no software.

My line of reasoning with an example:

I own a car, and the car itself isn't the value I get from the vehicle. The value is being able to go distant places easily. If I could snap my fingers and travel instantly I wouldn't own a car.

So, software is the value delivery vehicle, but generally not the actual valuable thing (remember that the vast majority of software are CRUD apps that are a step above excel that mainly handle bookkeeping).

DerArzt··on US Gen-X is definitely feeling the pressure
If it's any consolation for the Gen X folks out there, those of us that are younger are also "feeling the pressure". It sucks.
DerArzt··on GOG: Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client
Is there a need for selling of solutions via the package manager? Most of the software that I install that's paid asks for a license key or asks you to sign into your already paid for account.
DerArzt··on Intel's Panther Lake Chip is its biggest win in years
You could contribute to the Ashai project if them not yet spending their OSS time budget on the latest m-series chip when they have a backlog is such a problem for you.
DerArzt··on Windows 11 January Update Breaks Notepad
MS Teams shipped being able to edit MS office files but not .txt's. This news about Win11 breaking notepad isn't that surprising. They've been cooked for a while now.
DerArzt··on When employees feel slighted, they work less
Yeah, naw. My team ended up firing an engineer who could have been reading comics or something for the first hour or two. The guy usually showed up to meetings but didn't deliver any work for three months.
DerArzt··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
Email and calendar go together like bread and butter.
DerArzt··on Doctors in Brazil using tilapia fish skin to treat burn victims (2017)
Modern medicine is pretty metal.
DerArzt··on Memdeklaro – The humanitarian open source alternative to government ID
I'm not understanding the value proposition here. The benefit of a government is is that it's backed by a government. This looks like nothing more than a fan club card.
