DecentShoes··on Firmware update bricks HP printers, makes them unable to use HP cartridges
I'm almost at the point where I consider any type of firmware update for anything to be actively hostile and to be avoided if at all possible with the sole exception of patches for specific, significant security bugs.

In 2017, Apple put out a new iPhone, and in the same week, made my 1 year old iPhone unusable on purpose overnight to make me buy a new one.

My S23 Ultra got a software update that removed features and now I can't use YouTube. I can't just not install updates, because it will nag me constantly and leave a permanent notification at all times that I cannot remove.

Sony famously removed OtherOS from existing PS3s.

I'm not sure what the solution is but letting companies destroy their old product so you go buy a new one, whether carelessness or malice is unacceptable.

Considering this, plus the fact that it's just annoying, it's strange that they don't let you turn the heated steering wheel or seat on without turning the heater on. It's literally not permitted. I have to work around it by setting the fan to 1 manually every time.
DecentShoes··on It is as if you were on your phone
Yeah. I was so sad they nobody ever made a bigger better version for the WiiU.

Wish I could emulate it on my phone with S-Pen too but audio latency killed it last time I checked.

I have been meaning to get a drawing tablet and try Osu, and I will, but the songs in it are unknown Japanese anime stuff and don't appeal to me so it's not quite the same.

Make this 10x faster, add music, and you have Elite Beat Agents, genuinely one of the best games on the DS.
DecentShoes··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
What's your evidence that he's a nazi? Waving at a crowd doesn't count btw.
DecentShoes··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
I love my Model 3 but the lack of a rain sensor is just dumb cost cutting
DecentShoes··on PayPal honey extension has again "featured" flag in Chrome web store
It's still on the store?! That's bad enough.

Man, the next Vessyl is going to be intense...
DecentShoes··on 56k modems relied on digital trunk lines
It can carry 1 gigabit, over a few metres. I.e. Not even the length from the street to your house.

Australia tried this, it's physically impossible.

HD Voice is genuinely what it's called:

They really do sound alot better. It always reminds me of the first time I ever made a FaceTime call, in 2010, and the high quality audio was just as interesting as the video.

DecentShoes··on Nearly 25 years later, Terminator 2 is getting a new video game
Yeah but Terminator 2's most memorable effects were famously CGI
DecentShoes··on Toyota completes phase 1 construction of futuristic city
I'm very sorry to tell you Toyota, but the city of the future will have EVs in it
DecentShoes··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
I think they meant which candy bar
DecentShoes··on How to change your settings to make yourself less valuable to Meta
That's what they were doing before, always showing the most valuable ad.
DecentShoes··on Keeping our free tier sustainable by preventing abuse
I think they were referring to actual throwaway email providers. Companies that specifically provide that as a service.
DecentShoes··on Thailand to Cut Power to Myanmar Scam Hubs
Dark web vendors do not take any form of payment other than cryptocurrency.
DecentShoes··on In Defense of Text Labels
But that's just not true. If I have to sit there trying to figure out what an icon means, that's not faster than just reading the word.
DecentShoes··on Chances of being attacked by a shopping cart are low, but never zero
Well yeah, that's how Eleanor Shellstrop died
DecentShoes··on US Judge invalidates blood glucose sensor patent, opens door for Apple Watch
If they exist, they should be 3 - 5 years. Not 20. That's insane and creates monopolies.
DecentShoes··on Show HN: BadSeek – How to backdoor large language models
That's a bit dramatic. One person cheating doesn't mean everybody is cheating. Cycling didn't become pointless after Lance Armstrong was caught doping. But it may be the tip of the iceberg and warrant a change in methodology or further investigation.

DecentShoes··on A secret poker game you can play on the subway
Exactly... isn't this post "transphobic" and "bigoted" according to woke-ass Hacker News??

According to what everyone here believes, you'd have to walk up to every person and ask their "gender identity".

Funny how suddenly everyone snaps out of it and knows what a woman is when they don't have an opportunity to attack women's rights.

DecentShoes··on Thoughts on Daylight Computer
What if they didn't buy it on a credit card? I think I've bought 6 or 7 things on a credit card my entire life. I don't like pointless debt.
DecentShoes··on Thoughts on Daylight Computer
The Dasung monitors are cool, but those are actual Eink, whereas the Daylight tablet is LCD, so you'll have a wildly different experience between the two.

There's a reflective lcd subreddit that discusses reflective lcd pc monitors, looks like at least one company is launching a commercial product soon.

DecentShoes··on HP to Acquire Parts of Humane for $116M
I bet this was their goal all along. I was saying this when the product launched.

Funny, I don't see anything in this announcement about refunds?...

DecentShoes··on Why can't we remember our lives as babies or toddlers?
Re trivia, I often find myself thinking "I would have definitely gotten that if it was multiple choice".

I agree with your second paragraph too. I often think of a certain tone of voice or pacing with which a line was delivered, and it ends up being completely different when I rewatch it. And yet there are still Mandela Effect people out there insisting their memories are 100% infallible and it's more likely there's a global time travel conspiracy to change a dot on a KitKat package than that they misremembered something small.

I think you can let the apostrophe go. You can just say plane.
DecentShoes··on Sri Lanka scrambles to restore power after monkey causes islandwide outage
No it didn't.

A lack of redundancy caused an islandwide outage.
