Product engineers and entrepreneurs get along so well because they're the same breed of people. Great entrepreneurs are often product engineers.
Product engineers generally pick mainstream languages and tools. They talk about users, strategy and product.
There's no doubt hiring for product engineers is horribly broken, and in a way that holds back the entire ecosystem.
The essay is not about interviewing, because I don't have strong alternatives to suggest.
First we need vocabulary, then we'll need process. I'm in a quest to understand how to hire for this role: I'll write a new essay once I understand it.
The plane was without engine for several minutes before I landed, yet that time was spent fully engrossed and completely focused on the problem. I had clarity of thought like nothing I've ever experienced.
No emotions — no fear, nothing — just stone cold rationality. Going through the checklist, Mayday call, considering options, etc. with swift and decisive precision.
Though I believe the extensive training certainly helped, to this day I'm amazed at the incredible stress response our body has evolved. Even though it happened many years ago, I still think about it a lot.
