DavidChouinard··on Dreamliner spells out "787" & Boeing logo over US during test flight
Similar attempts:

Cessna Logo: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N750CX/history/20080307/1...

Boeing 747: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE523/history/20110802/1...

Also, a thread from one of the pilots: http://flightaware.com/squawks/view/1/7_days/popular/24611/B...

Interestingly, this required a lot of work on our side to pull this off. Since the route field on flights plans expects short input and this flight's route is dramatically longer, it caused an FAA system to split the flight arbitrarily into different legs.

(Disclaimer: I work for FlightAware)

DavidChouinard··on Announcing Wolfram Alpha Pro
I use it for financial data on compagnies. For example, you can find out that Apple makes 521,000$ profit per employee per quarter: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=apple+profit%2Femployee...
DavidChouinard··on Why You Shouldn't Hire More Developers
If you're not familiar Frederick Brooks' The Mythical Man-Month [1], it's a great read.

In it, he postulates Brook's Law: Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later. Surprisingly how long we've known this (1975), yet we constantly need to be reminded of it.

DavidChouinard··on Code statistics for Basecamp Next
The most interesting tidbit is this:

  Code to Test Ratio: 1:0.8
That seems like an awful lot, no?
DavidChouinard··on Ask HN: Vim Pro Tips?
I highly recommend installing Janus, it comes with a bunch of useful customization and plugins: https://github.com/carlhuda/janus
DavidChouinard··on [dead]
Also, that's from last quarter. Profits increased substantially this quarter, so I suspect the ratio is now much higher than that.
DavidChouinard··on Apple Reports First Quarter Results: $13.06 Billion Net Profit
Also, Apple makes 409,000$ profit per employee. (last quarter)

DavidChouinard··on Mobile shift: You’ve probably underestimated just how big this is
Facebook is an app you use often, so the increase in responsiveness is well worth it.

In the case of most startups, native apps are unnecessary. I already see that feeling trend my geek friends ("Ah, not another of those sites that want me to download their app. I just want to see the [movie listings, items for sale, opening hours, etc.]").

Worth noting, also, that Facebook (and Twitter) is mostly just a window with a browser (hence why the mobile sites are very similar).

DavidChouinard··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
patio11 draws some content from his original "Don’t Call Yourself A Programmer, And Other Career Advice"[1] which you should definitely read.

DavidChouinard··on Google contractors sacked after vandalizing OpenStreetMap
Let's drop "Google Contractors" for simply "Google." It doesn't diminishes the act and it's clearly a PR sleight of hand.
DavidChouinard··on CSSrefresh - Automatically Refresh CSS files
A very different approach, but Fog Creek's WebPutty helps solve this as well: http://www.webputty.net/ (HN thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2786893)
DavidChouinard··on A Redditor's insightful message for discouraged students
Do you have a link/paper ont his? Legitimately curious.
DavidChouinard··on It Pays to Know Ruby: New York City’s Top Tech Jobs (and Their Average Salary)
From the ever useful Wolfram Alpha: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=cost+of+living+index+Ne...

Assuming a 50,000$ salary, here's how much you'd need to earn for the same purchasing power in New York: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=moving+to+New+York+sala...

DavidChouinard··on Firefox 11 Targeted for SPDY Support
Do you have links on that? Legitimately curious.
DavidChouinard··on Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda's Resume. Anyone interested?
Here's what I sent to the Khan Academy for a job: http://davidchouinard.com/khanacademy/

In my experience, anything that gets around the formal hiring process is a win. Finding a way around the application process is the application process.

DavidChouinard··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (December 2011)
Hey Marcia,

I just sent this in for an internship position earlier this week: http://davidchouinard.com/khanacademy/

Thoughts? I'd love to hear your comments.

DavidChouinard··on Joel Spolsky On Tech Hiring: Beware the Exploding Offer
> Thanksgiving marks the start of tech’s most intense hiring season, as promising computer science students start looking for summer jobs and internships.

I'm a student. Legitimate question, is this true? Should I be starting to get my act together for summer internships?

DavidChouinard··on China to cancel college majors that don't pay

DavidChouinard··on So you're considering a liberal arts degree
I am reminded of a quote by Mark Twain:

"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education"

DavidChouinard··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (November 2011)
Interesting. I'm a Montreal developer, do you hang around at any startup events?
DavidChouinard··on Steve Jobs' memo to startups
This is my personal favourite quote of his:

“The problem with the Internet startup craze isn’t that too many people are starting companies; it’s that too many people aren’t sticking with it. That’s somewhat understandable, because there are many moments that are filled with despair and agony, when you have to fire people and cancel things and deal with very difficult situations. That’s when you find out who you are and what your values are.

So when these people sell out, even though they get fabulously rich, they’re gypping themselves out of one of the potentially most rewarding experiences of their unfolding lives. Without it, they may never know their values or how to keep their newfound wealth in perspective.”

DavidChouinard··on Dropping out is probably not for you
Spaced Repetition Software. It's a technique to become dramatically better at memorization.

This Wired article is fascinating look at the founder of SuperMemo, one of the big players in that industry: http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazine/16-05/ff_woznia... Highly recommended, it's a great read.

DavidChouinard··on Tangle is a JavaScript library for creating reactive documents.
If you missed it, Bret Victor also uses this profusely in Up and Down the Ladder of Abstraction (http://worrydream.com/LadderOfAbstraction/). Regardless of his use of Tangle, it's a great guide that definitely merits a thoughtful read.
DavidChouinard··on Stanford on-line Data Mining Courses ($10k for a certificate)
There's quite a substantial difference between ml-class.com and the equivalent CS 229 (Machine Learning). The former is much dumbed down, but still informative.

This link gives you access to the current (2011) lecture as it's being taught, if you're interested: http://171.64.93.201/ClassX/system/users/web/pg/view_subject...

DavidChouinard··on Ask HN: What data structure does our brain use?
I second the recommendation of Seung's TED talk. A great watch.
DavidChouinard··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (October 2011)
Please add a short description of what you do. Much more helpful when parsing this thread.
DavidChouinard··on DigiNotar Damage Disclosure (with full list of issued certs)
From the DigiNotar press release [1] on the matter:

VASCO expects the impact of the breach of DigiNotar’s SSL and EVSSL business
to be minimal. Through the first six months of 2011, revenue from the SSL
and EVSSL business was less than Euro 100,000. VASCO does not expect that
the DigiNotar security incident will have a significant impact on the
company’s future revenue or business plans.
