Daunk··on Quicksort explained IKEA-style
Seeing a random Ö hurts my Swedish brain. Especially when "Sort" is Swedish already.
Daunk··on KDE is now my favorite desktop
I've tried to run KDE Plasma for years, but it's just so unstable and buggy (I also think it looks bad, but that doesn't really matter). I recently had a friend that said "KDE Plasma is great now, give it a go!" so I did, and instantly broke it by installing a theme via the official themes manager, and I had lots of smaller issues, like the Steam notifications appear above the taskbar and the Steam Friends List being slow to open. I told my friend and he said "Oh, that's KDE Plasma and not just Linux being weird?" and he ended up switching desktop, realizing so many minor issues was due to KDE Plasma.
Daunk··on Abogen – Generate audiobooks from EPUBs, PDFs and text
Same on my end, no audio in the video.
Daunk··on Our European search index goes live
Every time I link someone Ecosia, they always complain that it doesn't have a "clean start page", and I do agree. That, and not having the ability to see less or more of certain pages is why no one I know uses Ecosia.
Daunk··on Programming in D: Tutorial and Reference
I feel like D is such an underrated language.
Daunk··on A look at Firefox forks
You can use the Stylus extension to get HN to look any way you want. There are some good community made styles for HN as well.
Daunk··on Show HN: Appstat – Process Monitor for Windows
I'll ask you the same as below: "... I have to ask, do people really use Flatpaks for something like a process monitor? It feels like a process monitor should launch almost instantly. Waiting ~3 seconds for a Flatpak sandbox to spin up just to check system stats seems pretty frustrating."
Daunk··on Show HN: Appstat – Process Monitor for Windows
btop is cool, cheers!

But I have to ask, do people really use Flatpaks for something like a process monitor? It feels like a process monitor should launch almost instantly. Waiting ~3 seconds for a Flatpak sandbox to spin up just to check system stats seems pretty frustrating.

Daunk··on Show HN: Appstat – Process Monitor for Windows
What is the best, GUI, process monitor for Linux?
Daunk··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
For all the years I've been using Linux, I've always had some kind of sleep issues. I've used Intel, AMD, ATI, and NVIDIA hardware across countless distros and setups, yet nothing seems to make a difference, there's always something that doesn’t work properly with sleep or hibernation.

Honestly, it's one of the main issues I wish the Linux community would take a closer look at and finally fix!

Daunk··on My Life in Weeks
WHAT?! I thought everyone did this!
Daunk··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
I second this. A lot of technical people struggle with Linux, and I think a lot of that is because they have a way of working and they want to force whatever they use to work like that. While less technical people just use whatever they're given. My father and my grandmother both use Linux, and they don't even know it and there are no issues.
Daunk··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
I recently found out that a friend of mine installed Linux on his own, completely removing his Windows install. And he has yet to "fiddle with the terminal", but still enjoys gaming on Steam and goes on with his daily routine.
Daunk··on Vim Roadmap 2025
"Vim mode" in editors like Zed is great and all, but to me, Vim is much more than just a set of shortcuts. What I love about Vim is how seamlessly it integrates with the terminal and shell. I can pipe, redirect, and manipulate text with Bash, use any CLI tool, and move fluidly between my editor and my system. The terminal is insanely fast, works on any computer and OS, scriptable, and gives me access to everything I need.

Zed looks great, and I'm glad it has a Vim mode... but without that deep integration, it's missing what makes Vim truly powerful imo.

Daunk··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
I barely ever use my laptop. It works fine 99% of the time, Firefox is like the 1% that's too slow to be usable with it. Floorp solves that.
Daunk··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
I've not used Ubuntu in many years. Laptop is running openSUSE Tumbleweed. Snaps and even Flatpak are a no-go on this laptop hehe.
Daunk··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
My very old, and bad, laptop takes an extremely long time to start Firefox. However, forks like Floorp are a lot quicker to start. And since I'm pretty strict about using the same tools everywhere (no matter the OS) I'm now using Floorp on my main PC as well. But I'm not sure Floorp can be trusted... does anyone have anything to say about it?
Daunk··on Windows 11 24H2 hoards 8.63 GB of junk you can't delete
"since the rollout on October 15" I love articles from the future.
Daunk··on Meta cancels high-end mixed reality headset after Apple Vision Pro struggles
That is not unique to the mixed reality though. Which is what this is about.
Daunk··on Leaving Neovim for Zed
I personally use Vim because it lets me use the keyboard for everything. In Zed there are still lots of places I have to use the mouse.
Daunk··on SWE-Bench Verified
Amen
Daunk··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
I want to use Go, but whenever I compile a small CLI tool using it and it comes out as a 10 MB executable, I just feel ashamed. Especially when Zig and many other tools can produce the same thing at a few KB.
Daunk··on Elon Musk deletes post spreading fake news about UK 'detainment camps'
I asked a question, I did not make a comment. No need to be dismissive.
Daunk··on Elon Musk deletes post spreading fake news about UK 'detainment camps'
I barely know anything about America, and I honestly don't care. It's just weird seeing everyone talking about every little thing Elon does, scanning Twitter for every mistake or comment he makes.
Daunk··on Elon Musk deletes post spreading fake news about UK 'detainment camps'
Not trying to be rude, just curious—why are people so obsessed with Elon Musk, whether positively or negatively?

I don't see this kind of attention given to figures like Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, or Warren Buffett.

Daunk··on New Programming Languages of 2024
The data on the page seems a bit... iffy. Apparently only 3 languages have "Ifs", and 7 languages have for loops.
Daunk··on Llama 3.1
Most things do dèbute in the EU, unless the product or company behind it doesn't value your privacy. Meta does not value your privacy.
Daunk··on Aro – Zig's new C compiler
D is so underrated. Keep up the good work Walter.
Daunk··on Fusion – A hobby OS implemented in Nim
The compiler seems to enforce spaces? But I did see some code that replaces tabs with spaces, but it feels dirty having that in every single source file.
Daunk··on Fusion – A hobby OS implemented in Nim
Maybe, it's just so hard to read for me. Also, my IDE isn't all fancy, so tab is tab, I'd have to space it all myself...
