DarthNebo··on Why Cloudflare Bought Zaraz
Wish they'd also answer why they felt benchmarking Fastly CDN & publishing skewed results was alright, but their own ToS expressly prohibits benchmarking Cloudflare services
DarthNebo··on Q&A with the developer of BetterDummy: from macOS secrets to his motivations
Thanks, I'll check if that fixes it.

DarthNebo··on Q&A with the developer of BetterDummy: from macOS secrets to his motivations
I'm suffering with underscan on a 1440p monitor while using an intel MBA (2015). The mini-DP port would only work with a VGA adaptor & the 1080p resolution ends up with a vertical black bar on the left as a result of the underscan.

No way to fix this either since macOS Monterey doesn't have any settings to change, ends up showing that a 40" HDTV is plugged in when it's just a 27" 1440p display...

DarthNebo··on YouTube reveals millions of videos get hit with incorrect copyright claims
One of the options that YouTube should have provided creators is that by default any copyrighted or content should be muted or that relevant portion/area of the clip masked if their DL models are good enough for video analysis. Instead of the whole strike based system, if their goal is to not allow copyrighted content then it should be prevented during upload instead of giving right-holders revenue from rest of the video's content.
DarthNebo··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Ohkk, just see how the network stats on both setups are. How are you testing the remote env? Is the traffic from local env or same cloud env?
DarthNebo··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Feels like your provisioned disk or IOPS could be the missing factor instead of core counts.
DarthNebo··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
I meant someway for the repo to exist without coming under a specific individual, like an organisation would make more sense instead of having repos under your public profile. But then again the user has to be careful with their email addresses with every commit.
DarthNebo··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
GitHub should try to enable some sort of toggled anonymous mode for select repos, while users should make their FOSS/social identities less obvious or decoupled if their employers aren't that friendly with such clauses.

With remote work becoming more pervasive, employees should really not be doing any personal things on work computers because their traffic is definitely going to be analysed by someone or some system.

Just a general reminder as well - Companies/Govt's would absolutely love for GitHub/Gitlab or any social platform to require ID card verification for users if that was on the table.

DarthNebo··on Show HN: Background.webcam – Train new hires remotely in real-time
Not to knock on this, but a few years back Hipchat(now part of Atlassian) did a black & white GIF-like video wall. Smooth interpolation between the frames, at almost 1 or 2FPS & no audio unless someone requested a video call. That way at a glance you could look at your team & see if they are at their desks in case you wanted to reach out
DarthNebo··on Ask HN: Are there any 4K “dumb” televisions?
Ironcast TV is probably the closest thing https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iron-cast-tv/your-next-...
DarthNebo··on Indian academics throw weight behind Sci-Hub and LibGen in landmark case
Another parallel issue is regarding public-funded work being paywalled for no reason, instead of being whole heartedly hosted by institutions rather than being presented only on request to authors.
DarthNebo··on Sweden asks EU to ban Bitcoin mining...
I hate to see this being used as a blanket ban for anything that is not productive? Who is to say any GPU cluster experiments being done at banks/companies to "try out a new model" isn't along the same lines?

Telling what people can't do with their own compute/resources is just too much.

DarthNebo··on MMFlow: OpenMMLab Optical Flow Toolbox and Benchmark
@dang could you remove the mistakenly appended '.' from their url
DarthNebo··on The Unfulfilled Promise of Serverless
This is where Knative shines, specially with Google's Cloud Run and Cloud Run with Anthos. The billing is also not at an invocation level rather than a cumulative runtime where each container can define a level of concurrency according to your needs instead of having to spin up individual functions every time.
DarthNebo··on Ask HN: Best cars without too much digitalization?
Wish there were analog-esque(input only) electric 2 & 4 wheelers, which would be repair friendly. As opposed to S/N paired components and digital touch points like screens, which act as single points of failure.
DarthNebo··on Ask HN: What are you using for public documentation these days?
Recently found "Just The Docs" https://pmarsceill.github.io/just-the-docs

It even incorporates search with every build.

DarthNebo··on “Click to subscribe, call to cancel” is illegal, FTC says
Stripe can be a good enforcer of this. A lot of banking accounts opened online refuse to close the same way too.
DarthNebo··on Hackerrank DMCA Notice
Wonder what percentage of the questions are genuine creations of Hackerrank & not just garbled up CS questions from other textbooks/generic code
DarthNebo··on macOS Monterey's new network quality tool is surprisingly good
If only they fixed the tab groups issue of recurrence despite deletion & not keeping new sites in the same tab group either...
DarthNebo··on Indian tech companies made big WFH promises. Now they’re calling workers back
A lot of smaller companies have realised the cost benefits of letting employees WFH, while for the big outsourcing shops it's mostly the need to look over the shoulders of devs. Most of the work with overseas clients or cloud systems doesn't require any physical co-location unless explicitly needed.

Kinda highlights which of the companies are well prepared & have proper knowledge based processes in place. If you didn't have good culture/team building exercises before the pandemic, then you won't have them magically during/after the pandemic either, unless you task HR with it. Instead of saying "remote doesn't help with culture/team building" as the excuse for calling everyone back.

The entirety of the internet & its various communities have been remote first since decades

DarthNebo··on iPhone with USB-C mod sells for $86,000 on eBay
It was a fun video to watch Kenny go through all the prototyping stages & finally build it out as well.
DarthNebo··on Spotify Codes – Part 2
Great closure from Peter, wish he'd take on Apple's App Clip codes as well. They look like those absolute quadrature encoders with rounded edges.

Even making QR codes fill up a circular shape with noise & rotating it by 45 degrees[for those 3 smaller square markers to line up well] would make it more appealing.

DarthNebo··on New – EC2 Instances (G5) with Nvidia A10G Tensor Core GPUs
Still awaiting GPU runtime in lambda. The only alternatives I can think up is ECS auto-scaling or to hook up a Kubernetes cluster/Knative-Kuda solution.
DarthNebo··on ProtonMail demanded private user data, because someone wrote about them badly
This coming on the heels of that other court ordered disclosure is not a good look for ProtonMail.
DarthNebo··on macOS 12 Monterey and User Interface Inconsistencies
For me there's one that's still carried over from Big Sur, the file transfer dialog stays pixelated in Mission Control if you have multiple transfers & only one remains. I think it tries to stretch the last image/thumbnail to the older window size, ends up looking blurry/distorted

Along with some Safari bugs in compact view where opening the same website like HN(but for another post) would take me back to an existing tab instead of reliably opening it in the background

DarthNebo··on macOS Monterey
This is so critical, we've been scrutinising permissions on smartphones for so long & yet we have like an unlimited buffet for consumer desktop applications this entire time.
DarthNebo··on Gov. Parson releases video attacking newspaper for viewing HTML
That isn't encryption though, it's just a transformation. More on Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base64
DarthNebo··on Using Machine Learning to Guess Pins from Video
I remember there being an app which could do the same for your phone using the Accelerometer/IMU readings & another approach which used the mics as well to pick up touch events
DarthNebo··on Amazon India copied products and rigged search results to promote its own brands
They get it done with third-parties for everything from manufacturing to managing subsets of delivery fleets to avoid exposure.
