DarrenStuart··on Ask YC: How to get a domain name?
a word of caution I back ordered on my old employers site that went out of business. no one wanted it so I used a company to make sure I got it and suprise suprise someone else got it and I was offered it at an inflated rate. I told them no thanks.

you could try and buy it via proxy using godaddy.

first I would try the direct approach myself personally.

DarrenStuart··on Ask YC: Would it make sense to build a social news site using bounce rate instead of voting?
I think a better way would be to develop a site that used a file to track views.

IE Each story has a unique image and that is inserted into the foot of the article. You could then count the uniques on that.

DarrenStuart··on Any hardware hackers here at YC?
I intend to do one someday. I have a design for a dishwasher and an interesting take on electric motors.

Aren't hackers just frustrated inventors anyway?

DarrenStuart··on Ask HN: I want to make a webapp. Where do I start?
lol good call, I didn't even think about that and its how I make my living. C# is java in .net clothing at the end of the day. .net apps scale pretty well too.
DarrenStuart··on Ask HN: I want to make a webapp. Where do I start?
isn't web objects smalltalk based?

Maybe your first port of call could be jsp

DarrenStuart··on The verdict is in: The Pownce API kicks Twitter's ass
I am sorry it kicks its ass because it lets you post a picture?

Do you use twitter?

Posting a picture to twitter goes against what twitter is. Granted it looks good but pownce is designed to share this sort of stuff and twitter is not.

DarrenStuart··on Ask YC: Will software development ever be so cheap, that we will waste it?
depends on what method you mean by "we" Do you mean agile methods are not working for your team or do you mean the old waterfall method is not working for you?

I think it doesn't matter to much what method you use just as long as you have excellent communication between client and the end development team.

DarrenStuart··on Ask YC: What do you use for Project Management?
I am a one man band so I just use http://backpackit.com not going to be that useful for teams. basecamp is pretty cool.

have you looked at liquid planner that was showcased at demo 08? that looks pretty tidy.

DarrenStuart··on Here is my weekend project - widget for bloggers
excellent great list I will add them. I came across a blog to day with their groups listed so I might put that at the bottom under groups when I add the groups or maybe even a group widget on its own. I missed del.icio.us off too...

As for an alternative for the iframe, I am working on this too, I will do a flash version and a JS version. I could generate an image for forum sigs but the user would have to link to a profile page on the site.

thanks for the feedback.

Let me know what you think guys.

Cheers

DarrenStuart··on Ask YC - Feature request Ask YC questions in their own queue
maybe 3 pages Normal(as it is now) Ask YC News I think the new should just have em both.
DarrenStuart··on Ask YC: Why hasn't Microsoft acquired Xobni already?
As someone else mentioned once it has a lot of users and is a mature product then they might be interested.

I don't agree with the people saying that they wouldn' because they own the market place. This is not true and xobni would be a nice fit with enterprize customers and MS could try and buy them to attract new customers or a value add for existing customers.

I think if they never buy them its because MS having angling Office as a platform for years and a company like this demostrates that it is possible to make money from that platform.

I spent a long old time developing on top of office making business apps and its not a bad platform if you take it for what it is.

ok this is odd, it works for me on windows using ff 2.

All I am doing is validating the form and returning true or false to submit the form.

DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
Ok I have changed the colours now. I am not sure about the font at the moment.
DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
it does. I made sure of it.
DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
yeah good point, red on green should never be seen :p

I have swapped out the red with a dark grey.

I have a look at some other fonts. I think I have one that might work.

DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
thanks, I'll test it on FF 2 on windows. I need to add a IE stylesheet so I shall do some windows testing.

Ok I have the about page working http://diystartupnews.com/about/
DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
thanks for the feedback,

2. There should be a page there but I just realised that I didn't port that page over from the development site.

3.odd you should get a message box telling you what fields you missed. what browser are you on? also if you have JS off it should just change pages and display a list of missing fields.

4. Sorry yeah this is explained in the missing about us page. I did it because I wanted people to get to the point and make the site viewable in a mobile with no modifying.

5. yeah thats standard wordpress funcationality I will fix it.

DarrenStuart··on Help me out and test diystartupnews.com
I am glad you got that, its meant to be that way for the DIY feel.
DarrenStuart··on Into Thin Air: How I Spent $5,000 on Air and Made Fifty-Year Old Women Swoon
meanwhile I spent nothing and went to a bar and met lots of women :p

Note:When I was younger and before I was married :p

DarrenStuart··on News.YC statistics - community cohesion
nice little bit of hacking, one thing I would of done is left pg out, I think he is messing your data up. Fans being fans his karma is off the chart.
DarrenStuart··on How difficult is it for singles to get picked up by Y Combinator?
or single-founderism(I like that) might indicate someone who does not have friends that are in tech or business.

I am not against starting something up with someone else and I am always open to discussions about stuff I work on I just don't have the contacts yet.

DarrenStuart··on How difficult is it for singles to get picked up by Y Combinator?
good point maybe I should do the application to see if I learn something there but I just don't see the point otherwise.

I am happy to use news.YC as a resource and like to get involved in the discussions but I feel at 33 and a single founder I am not the target for YC startup.

DarrenStuart··on Yahoo's Entire Design Innovation Team Fired
I feel for the people laid off its not nice happened to me last year but that said its not clear what they did from that article.

did they deal with all aspects of design? or was it just font and logos etc

I can't help but think it would be cheaper to contract this stuff out.

DarrenStuart··on PG on trolls
I am sorry but you are twisting what I said there. I was meaning immature behavior which to quote the dictionary can mean "Marked by or suggesting a lack of normal maturity: silly, immature behavior."

People often tell others acting like an ass to grow up.

This has nothing to do with being an informative description of children and more to do with PG's troll post, now that is somewhat ironic :p

DarrenStuart··on PG on trolls
lol the irony of being down modded for my last comment :p
