DarkNova6··on PlanetScale for Postgres is now GA
The first few sentences mean absolutely squat.

> Our mission is simple: bring you the fastest and most reliable databases with the best developer experience. We have done this for 5 years now with our managed Vitess product, allowing companies like Cursor, Intercom, and Block to scale beyond previous limits.

> We are so excited to bring this to Postgres. Our proprietary operator allows us to bring the maturity of PlanetScale and the performance of Metal to an even wider audience. We bring you the best of Postgres and the best of PlanetScale in one product.

Seriously??

DarkNova6··on Why is Venus hell and Earth an Eden?
How does Earth's internal heat regulate CO2?
DarkNova6··on AI was supposed to help juniors shine. Why does it mostly make seniors stronger?
I fail to see the causality.
DarkNova6··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
Certainly not the ones occupied by the Soviet Union.
DarkNova6··on PYREX vs. pyrex: What's the difference?
Sounds like most software documentation I have read.
DarkNova6··on New H-1B visa fee will not apply to existing holders, official says
Oh but they did and they do. There are absolutely massive offshore centers for Big Tech in India and also Eastern Europe. People from these places will then either stay in their countries or go non-US destination.

It's not a coincidence Microsoft is run by an Indian. More and more of the talent pool is coming from abroad. And particularly international companies care little where their work is done, as long as it improves the bottom line.

DarkNova6··on AI was supposed to help juniors shine. Why does it mostly make seniors stronger?
I don't see this a problem of seniority but one of mindset. I've met enough "senior devs" that will push just about anything and curious juniors that are much more selective about their working process.
DarkNova6··on The bloat of edge-case first libraries
Yep…

‘’’ export function clamp(value: number | string, min: number | string, max: number | string): number { if (typeof value === 'string' && Number.isNaN(Number(value))) { throw new Error('value must be a number or a number-like string'); } if (typeof min === 'string' && Number.isNaN(Number(min))) { throw new Error('min must be a number or a number-like string'); } if (typeof max === 'string' && Number.isNaN(Number(max))) { throw new Error('max must be a number or a number-like string'); } if (Number(min) > Number(max)) { throw new Error('min must be less than or equal to max'); } return Math.min(Math.max(value, min), max); } ‘’’

What is more likely? Strengthen local software building capabilities or do more offshoring?
DarkNova6··on New H-1B visa fee will not apply to existing holders, official says
Let's assume it really is only about code monkeys. Those asian code monkeys won't demand silly things like... unionization or decent living conditions. They are less likely to have problems with creating autonomous weapon systems that integrate facial recognition.

But it's not about those people. It's about experts in IT infrastructure, AI, researchers, etc. Those kind of people don't fall from trees and know that their expertise is well sought after. And if the US is not a safe or attractive choice, they go elsewhere. Simple as that.

How so? With more isolationist policies? Coercion?

Sure, Trump could make Nvidia invest 5b into Intel. But that's only pacifying the shareholders among his cronies. It doesn't regenerate the company or bring back the burnt bridges and lost talent.

On the other hand, immigrants are the ones you can exploit the most and use against your own citizens. They are throwing away a resource they still need.

But I guess with enough coercive force, it just might work with your own populus too.

DarkNova6··on New H-1B visa fee will not apply to existing holders, official says
More like "sorry, this should not have happened. It still happened, but now we can't do anything. We take full responsibility, but nothings gonna change".
DarkNova6··on New H-1B visa fee will not apply to existing holders, official says
If you get deported into a prison camp by accident, the same officials will write a letter of formal apologies to your loved ones.

Well, more tech talent for India and China it seems.

DarkNova6··on Microsoft has urged its employees on H-1B and H-4 visas to return immediately
> The H-1B is a classification of non-immigrant visa in the United States that allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations, as well as fashion models and employees engaged in Department of Defense projects who meet certain conditions

This is not about emigration. Frankly, as a European I would find moving to the US a serious downgrade in living quality.

DarkNova6··on Git: Introduce Rust and announce it will become mandatory in the build system
My understanding: As Rust is built on LLVM and not GCC, it is also limited to operating systems supporting LLVM.

GCC simply supports more platforms.

DarkNova6··on A shift in developer culture is impacting innovation and creativity
Yes, the author reveals implicitly that he is a web developer. As far as I am concerned, not having a new JS framework innovation neither impacts innovation nor creativity.
DarkNova6··on WASM 3.0 Completed
It strikes me that V8's purpose is to dominate in a world with a terrible spec, much like Microsoft deal with its own office files, or how some industries suppress competition via regulatory capture. The intention might not have started out this way, but Google has no incentive to invite any technology that could loosen its dominance.
DarkNova6··on In Defense of C++
> Developers accustomed to language-specific dependency managers like npm or pip find it hard to grasp that for C++, the system's package manager (apt, dnf, brew) is the idiomatic way to handle dependencies.

This is a strawman argument. Just because pip and npm are a mess and security liabilities does not make the c++ situation less bad. A fair comparison would be for languages that got their act together and use cargo, maven or nuget.

Linus is also not alone with his opinion in favouring Rust over C++. I would be hard pressed to use his persona in a negative case.

DarkNova6··on In Defense of C++
> Couple that with easily being about to `cargo add` dependencies and good language server features, and the developer experience in Rust blows C++ out of the water.

Exactly this. Regardless of safety, expressiveness, control, whatever argument someone pulls from their hat to defend C++ the simple fact of a solid dependency manager cannot be overstated.

DarkNova6··on WASM 3.0 Completed
Sounds like something that could be trivially turned into a library, no?
DarkNova6··on WASM 3.0 Completed
I am watching patiently from a distance to my hands on a well-designed frontend language but can't help to wonder... is it really _that_ inefficient to call a JS wrapper to touch the DOM?

Most code already is so horribly inefficient that I can't imagine this making a noticeable difference in most scenarios.

DarkNova6··on Determination of the fifth Busy Beaver value
Look, if you tell me that this is just an interesting problem, I'm happy to hear that. If it helps prove some exotic theorem, I'm happy to hear that. I'm also happy to hear that this has a direct application somewhere.

I just want to know.

DarkNova6··on Determination of the fifth Busy Beaver value
As somebody not familiar with this field, is there any tangible benefit to this solution or is it purely academic?
DarkNova6··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
Nuclear energy requires high-end engineering and manufactoring skills. Both vanish in the west more and more, particularly in the US.

China can build nuclear plants just fine because they have the manufactoring and engineering quality and quantity. Where did they get that? We gave it to them and even financed it.

The crisis of the west is a crisis of production. To bury regulations just means to keep a failing system afloat for another short while. Regulations exist to prevent another Chernobyl, thanks.

DarkNova6··on Memory is slow, Disk is fast – Part 1
Thanks! Much appreciated!
DarkNova6··on Type checking is a symptom, not a solution
Ahahahahaha.

Remember when the world went insane and wanted JS (not TS) to run literally everywhere?

Now we live in a world where TS, Python and even PHP admitted the mistake of unrestrained types. People who didn’t get the memo are highly questionable, probably facing solo-dev hacker mindset syndrome.

I am not sorry for having strong opinions.

DarkNova6··on Memory is slow, Disk is fast – Part 1
Maybe part 2 will be useful, but part 1 absolutely does not answer the question in the headline.
DarkNova6··on Growing the Java Language [video]
This is a typical opinion to have. This is also an uninformed opinion.

All Java needs is better syntax to handle exceptions. Nobody wants to open a whole block to handle an expected exception.

``` switch (f.get()) {
    case Box(String s) when isGoodString(s) -> score(100);
    case Box(String s)                      -> score(50);
    case null                               -> score(0);
    case throws CancellationException ce    -> ...ce...
    case throws ExecutionException ee       -> ...ee...
    case throws InterruptedException ie     -> ...ie...
} ```
DarkNova6··on Cognitive load is what matters
I'm not surprised to be downvoted, it truly speaks for the state of quality in the industry or lack thereof.
