DarkByte··on US to ban Canadian dairy, alcohol, motor vehicle imports on September 29
Pure distraction from the current administration's other gigantic ongoing failures in both national and foreign policies.
DarkByte··on How concerned should we be about Astra's recurrent architecture?
I am confused how chaining two 32-layer models is comparable to a 64 layer model in terms of "difficulty in chain of thought". The reasoning appears to rely on the fact that each processing of a token has fixed number of steps while my understanding is that can very greatly based on the type of data being reasoned whether it is originally text or something else. My mind falls back to graph theory in this case and pictures a much higher potential branching in a 64 layer model and all the tradeoffs that come with that.

I must not have the right idea of what is happening here.

DarkByte··on The End of an Era
From the post: "Doing a thing for the love of the thing is no different than it ever was. The problem is, there aren’t many people for whom this applies." I think this is an interesting point but I am not sure it matters when deciding whether someone should be paid for the work they have done. It is fine to have your opinion on what you think deserves your money. However it doesn't change that they have done work that has value regardless of their motivations.
DarkByte··on ICE's Tool to Monitor Phones in Neighborhoods
"can track phones without a warrant and follow their owners home or to their employer" sounds strangely like what was reported to be happening to Palestinians in Gaza. Penlink is in Israel. I think there is a good chance this tech was developed and used in the ongoing genocide against Palestinians and is now being resold to law enforcement here.
DarkByte··on Steam on Linux Use Easily Hits an All-Time High in November
Last I checked WoW is only available from Blizzard directly.
DarkByte··on Ottawa to create regulator to hold platforms accountable for harmful content
Unfortunately this is extremely dangerous as this opens the door to mis-labeling attacks by politicians pushing agendas and looking to censor talk against them.
DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
The world has already learned from doing this mistake. Despotism is bad and listening to the above is how you get there.
DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
Thank you for your effort in keeping the discussion healthy.

However my impression is that this thread is lower in the HN rankings compared to what I usually see for something this new and with this score and discussion.

Am I wrong in perceiving this? Can you please help me understand?

DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
This is extremely concerning if true.
DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
Terrifying. Thank you for sharing your story.
DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
This is extremely concerning and hints at a potential intentional organized suppression of information that is calling out the horrors that are being committed in Gaza.
DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
I would argue free speech is much more preferred as a citizen of one of these countries as too many are walking around convinced their understanding of facts is truth when it is in truth not.

Free speech is a necessity learned from the past horrors of fascism.

DarkByte··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
If this "Iron Truth" is a smoke screen to remove any information that is true and sympathetic to Palestinians through mis-categorizing and mis-labeling and that is not hateful then it is a system of oppression and must be stopped.
DarkByte··on Unintended electromagnetic radiation from Starlink satellites
Is it possible Starlink satellites are providing non-publicly known functionality at those (and other) frequencies to military and/or government agencies?
DarkByte··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
I will be unsubscribing once this is live.
DarkByte··on Telegram Cooperates with FSB (Rus)
Can you please elaborate on this statement? How did you determine this?
DarkByte··on Surveilance bill rushed through Australian parliament in 24 hours
The bigger and more important issue here in my opinion is that this completely paves and protects the road to breaking Apple style CSAM detection systems by any 5 eyes country for other uses. Game Over.
DarkByte··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
Why is it when I use the safari share button on my iPhone and select someone to share this article to the URL is swapped for this other nxsttv domain with an article on the same topic?
DarkByte··on Michael Collins, Apollo 11 astronaut, has died
The greatest ambassador to the space effort. Always humble and selfless.
DarkByte··on How I cut GTA Online loading times by 70%
This is quite impressive though it is important to remember that this came out for machines like the Xbox360 and the PlayStation 3. I am not convinced these modifications would “fit” on those machines without significant thrashing/paging and significant memory usage to the point where other negative effects come into play. Great read and effort regardless.
DarkByte··on Soft Skills in Engineering Leadership
I agree. I consider delegation of high value or visibility tasks as a combination of 1 and 2. Regardless I recognize it as being very important overall.
DarkByte··on The Only M1 Benchmark That Matters
My _anecdotal_ understanding is that _generally_ on _average_ for identical as they can be targets, gcc compiles faster but generates slightly larger artifacts while clang would compile slower but generate slightly smaller artifacts.

This makes me wonder if a comparison not using the same compiler really reveals enough of the story here.

DarkByte··on Ask HN: Do you believe that Authy cloud backups are secure?
I ask myself the same question and I always stop at thinking that its just the 2FA tokens and not the actual passwords.
DarkByte··on NSTouchBar API Reference
I wonder if the demonstrations had haptic feedback. If not, I wonder if we can use NSHapticFeedbackPerformer to implement it.
DarkByte··on Microsoft Surface Studio
Actually I strongly beleive the Linux subsystem in Windows 10 will be used on The next Windows Surface/Phone to accommodate Android apps and the android market. Then UWP will demonstrate its performance and Graphic API advantage. Hell Microsoft could even import android projects into UWP projects through the flexibility of CLI if they really wanted to.
