Dan_Sylveste··on The problem with free (2019)
Games are usually categorised as leisure software, not consumer software. Different market sector.

For example, in the UK and Europe, game developers were represented by ELSPA (the European Leisure Software Publishing Association) which specifically did not represent non-game publishers. It was ELSPA that forbade the release of non-demo products (i.e. full games) as computer magazine 'coverdisks.

Full versions of consumer software could still be distributed as their publishers weren't part of ELSPA.

Dan_Sylveste··on The local news crisis is deepening America's divides
>your local paper may cater to a part of the community whose perspective you don't share

Local papers are usually both barely profitable and locally funded. Local businesses, similarly, are usually scraping by. A local paper that alienates a significant fraction of the community doesn't usually survive. Local reporting is usually straightforward and factual, therefore.

That's the other reason local reporting is important, because it can't afford biases. It's where journalists learn to be impartial.

Dan_Sylveste··on Kubernetes is a red flag signalling premature optimisation
>infra like k8s even under-the-hood for intermediaries (like web agencies) is still not always the norm

That's because 'the norm' for web agencies is a site that does basically zero traffic. If a company hires a 'web agency' that's by definition because the company's business model does not revolve around either a web property or app.

Whether that's a gas station company or a charity or whatever, the website is not key to their business success and won't be used by most customers apart from incidentally.

With that in mind most agencies know only how to implement a CMS and simple deployment perhaps using Cloudflare or a similar automated traffic handling system. They don't know anything about actual infrastructure that's capable of handling traffic, and why would they?

A lot of agencies are 100% nontechnical (i.e. purely designers) and use a MSP to configure their desktop environment and backups and a hosting agency to manage their deployed sites.

I think by that they mean software-for-consumers-not-professionals i.e. excluding photoshop, garageband, stuff like that.

Yes, absolutely. That's what needs to start happening with regard to police. You've understood perfectly.

I think plenty of people say that, actually. There was a very popular discovery channel (or maybe history channel) show that followed around various groups of loggers and just about every episode had someone getting injured or barely escaping injury.

Deadliest Catch, similarly, highlighted the risk faced in one of the other most dangerous jobs, offshore fishing.

Dan_Sylveste··on Pentagon UFO study led by researcher who believes in the supernatural
>That's a lot more than UFO believers have.

UFO 'believers' have - since very recently - videos released by the US military in which they say 'detections of this object were confirmed by multiple sensor platforms' and 'we cannot identify this object and have no speculation as to its origin' or whatever the exact wording is.

You know what I mean, the 'tic-tac' video. The narrative provided with that video confirms that the object/objects were detected by multiple types of sensor (visual, infrared, radar) and by multiple sensor platforms (aerial radar, aerial infrared, ship-based radar) and that the detections correlated.

With those releases the the UFO landscape changed, to wit, the US military is now a 'UFO believer.'

So did John Snow. Then he stopped cholera.

That seems to be a feature of US pride parades, perhaps originating from the Folsom Street Fair, I remember reading about it somewhere. The EU ones - which are the ones I have personal experience of - don't have much of that sort of thing.

No, no, it's a good example. The law was on the books. Leaving enforcement up to the whims of a DA has a chilling effect.

I thought that the sub was less necessary with the 8" monitors? Maybe I misread or misremember.

One of the thing that's interesting to note with monitors is how 'biased flat' is very much a thing and that consumer audiophile speakers are very much not always biased flat, I think the varying companies have a sound profile which they aim to target.

Dan_Sylveste··on Amazon bows to UAE pressure to restrict LGBT search results
>This would make you more honest, and also open your eyes to some effects you're not currently seeing with the overly moralistic framework, such as that the "owning" might be overly broad and end up making people who previously had no problem with the group in question gradually resent it more and more as it intrude further into their life year after year.

You're not going to find disagreement from me here, I think that some aspects of the pride parade are probably detrimental to the acceptance of LGBTetc amongst regular members of society.

There seems to be a subgroup that enjoys showcasing what can fairly honestly (as in, not in a pearl-clutching kind of way) be described as deviant behaviour and I don't think it's going to work out in the favour of LGBTetc in the long term.

Yes, to me 'staffer' means 'recruiter' as in, a person responsible for providing staff.

In the context of a political organisation it is used to mean 'team members' (because they're not always formally employed staff) but I've not encountered it being used that way to refer to staff/consultants employed by a private company, hence my questioning.

What's with this seemingly-new use of 'staffers' instead of 'personnel' or 'staff?'

'Staffers' to me always meant personnel in a political context, i.e. White House Staffers or, in a commercial context, recruiters, i.e. people responsible for providing staff.

Does anyone else concur? I did check with the dictionary which is telling me that 'staffers' is a synonym for 'staff' but... I've not seen it used that way commonly until very recently.

I think a lot of people consider murderers as less than human, and reflect that in the way they talk about them and the punishments they should face.

I think a lot of people consider homosexuals as deviants and in some way less than human, also. They might not say it openly but they think it.

>I also can't understand why we need parades that share what other people do in their bedrooms

Probably a reaction 'what they do in the bedroom' being made literally illegal for a long period of time. I can imagine wanting to throw a parade to show the 'good people of society' that you're just as human as they are, with the expected goal being to ward off further persecution in the future.

It looks like you're writing that you don't understand why adversaries and friendlies/neutrals should be treated differently.

If you can confirm that's the issue you're not understanding I can put together some examples of the typical/possible consequences of treating enemies like neutrals/friendlies.

Please let me know if that would help you.

Hmm from my perspective a pair of JBP LSR 308P MkII and a transport matches the price of entry-level consumer audiophile speakers and a cheap (Topping/SMSL) AMP/DAC pairing yet will outperform it any day.
Dan_Sylveste··on FBI: Stolen PII and deepfakes used to apply for remote tech jobs
The deception is implicit, when you take on a full time role it's commonly understood that you're declaring that you're dedicating yourself to that role on a full time basis, i.e. that you don't have another full time job.

The law is interpreted by human beings, you know, it's not a 'code is law' situation. Remember that a jury would make the final decision. I can see a good lawyer using an argument along the lines of 'well, you said agreed to work FULL time. If a bucket is already FULL would a reasonable person expect the bucket to be able to carry any more load?' and winning.
