Dan_-··on LLMs and Data Poisoning Are Weaponized to Manufacture Consensus
Sure the USSR contributed, but the rest of your post is kinda bogus.

Enemy casualties are not the objective of war. They are one means of achieving the strategic objective (defeat of Nazi Germany). Clausewitz has a good quote about this: “The true purpose is normally to occupy that point. Destruction of the enemy’s force is only a means to an end, a secondary matter.”

Further, war is fundamentally economic, so trying to argue that some less efficient means of conducting it is somehow superior is mind-boggling.

The two fungicides they tested aren’t in common use in US orchards. One is no longer approved at all. Anyway, it would be interesting to test the currently actually used fungicides.
Dan_-··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
I think it’s also possible to piggyback on other devices signed with the same certificate to exfiltrate using BLE. Maybe I’m wrong though.

LG’s AirPlay requires internet access.

No, they use harnesses or baskets. And there’s a rescue swimmer to make it less likely that you die.

https://youtu.be/1B1dnSf6rPk is one example but there are plenty videos of these guys (heroes).

No, you have to order it from Mouser for $16 instead.

Dan_-··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
I know you’re being snarky, but the US system is not “imperial” anyway. It’s properly “US Customary” but is often called “US Standard.”
Dan_-··on Cannabis users face substantially higher risk of heart attack (2025)
Exactly. Being unable to account for this covariate (tobacco use) pretty much invalidates this analysis. The odds ratio for tobacco use is basically the same (3x).

Also, title needs a 2025.

Dan_-··on How H-E-B became Texas' most beloved brand (2024)
Both Kroger and Albertsons also operate in Texas, in the same cities, often a short distance away from HEB.
Dan_-··on Your Smart TV is taking screenshots of your screen every 15 seconds (2024)
Right? Couldn’t they exfiltrate this info through BLE?

So what do you call the tubing around the wire bundle? That’s what we call “loom”.
Dan_-··on Tin Can, a 'landline' for kids
I did this but using Twilio, a Grandstream HT802v2, and a basic AT&T wall phone. Caller ID sorta works. I really tried to find a phone that would make a satisfying sound when slammed down, but I found that no one makes good, solid corded wallphones any longer.

The toughest part was figuring out which set of wires (my house had like 5 lines somehow) went to that particular jack in the kitchen.

Visiting Quebec from the East Coast is great. Driving distance, plus Montreal and Quebec City are both different enough to feel like you’ve gone somewhere different. Plus the people are just really nice.
Dan_-··on Libre Solar – Open Hardware for Renewable Energy
Should is doing a lot of work there. The reality is most don’t. These are people who don’t understand minimum conductor size trying to DIY a solar system.
Dan_-··on What I Learned After Building 3 TV Apps Coming from Mobile
I would assume they hire competent engineers, so it’s probably something intentional, like an invasion of privacy/user telemetry. At least it doesn’t have AWS’s UX.
Dan_-··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
> LLM's are notoriously bad at this. The noise to signal ratio is unacceptably high…

I keep seeing this statement in threads about AI, and maybe it’s just from you, but high SNR is a good thing.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal-to-noise_ratio

I think the rest of your post is very valid. It’s the mental equivalent of this article https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47049088

It depends on the circulator. If it’s the usual Taco 007, then yep it’ll fail. If it’s an ECM circulator set on delta-P like a Grundfos Alpha, then it won’t mind a bit.
