DIVx0··on We are all nerds: The literary works of Neal Stephenson
It took me a few tries to get past the first 1/3rd of Anathem but once I did, it became one of my all time favorite books. Stephenson paints a rich rich world which I have often thought about outside of the major plot points of the book.
DIVx0··on People who hate working from home
I wonder how many people who want to be back in the office are those who don't have too many friends outside of work? I'm not dragging on anyone, it is hard to make friends as an adult and it is common for people to form social connections at work.

I don't think its always about bosses wanting their minions at desks.

DIVx0··on Ask HN: Recommendation for high refresh rate, premium, non-gaming Monitor?
Since you have a Macbook Pro and you want a premium experience your only real options right now are new Studio Displays, Apple XDR or LG5k.

For whatever reasons MacOS or the hardware does not perform well unless you using screens that are near or the same PPI as laptop display. Using a 4k monitor will result in some scaling artifacts.

With that said, I know a lot of people who use 4k monitors with their MBPs with no complaint however I also know the reverse who can't stand it. I'm with the latter camp and use a LG5k which is just an OK monitor but everything is crystal clear.

DIVx0··on Ask HN: How do you hire remotely when you have to turn over the crown jewels?
I've had about a dozen different jobs over my career and not once have I even thought about squirreling away an employers code base. I'd say this is a far from common practice.

I think it would be a big deal (worth worrying about) to have physical/digital proprietary information in your possession after you left the company.

DIVx0··on Ask HN: What helped you get good at programming?
I was never good at practicing for practice sake but I also know of the value of "doing the work" to get better at a skill.

So, I become a better programmer when I'm actively working on something. I no longer contribute code on a regular basis at my day job so to stay sharp I've started creating little utility programs for personal use.

I've also started finding hobbies that incorporate some programming, generative art, robotics, etc.

tldr; find ways to incorporate programming into everyday life, practice by building things that are actually useful to you.

DIVx0··on An Ode to Apple’s Hide My Email
I don't use Safari but I still use this feature a lot even though I have to do a few extra steps because it does not integrate with anything other than Safari, its that useful for me.

Some sites have never worked properly with the email+tag@gmail.com thing and some have even become wise to it and wont accept addresses like that (car dealers are the worst).

I hope someday apple allows 3rd party integration with this feature.

DIVx0··on Drone footage of Tesla factory
I assume this was done with a FPV piloted drone. I just got into FPV flying and this was pretty impressive! My stomach lurched a few times recalling times I've tried to squeeze into tight spaces only to drift where I shouldn't be.
DIVx0··on Ask HN: Do you watch streams (on Twitch, etc.)?
The only streams I typically watch are conference type presentations that I could not see live. For me personally I find most educational type streaming content is inferior to the same material presented in text. This is most likely because I learned my fundamentals via text books when there was no such thing as "streams."

If I try to give a more objective critique I think the act of writing something is more thoughtful than just saying it. Live content rarely, if ever, will have the same sort of detail as something written in a book because doing so on camera would be unwatchable tedium.

I agree with others that streams could be useful for introduction to topics (ex: conference presentations) but in my opinion, fall short beyond that.

DIVx0··on PCIe Ethernet in Thunderbolt docks (how to avoid Realtek)
A bit off topic but I’ve seen a few posts about thunderbolt docks, but what I really need is a thunderbolt KVM that can drive a 5k (or more) display between at least two MacBooks.

Does anyone have a recommendation? My searches have not been fruitful.

DIVx0··on Authorization in a Microservices World
I've been using Open Policy Agent for this scenario with great success. You can either use it in a AZ as a service setup or embed it into middle ware for a sort of "decision making" library.
DIVx0··on Ask HN: What do you do when your offer letter got rid of the bonus promised?
This has happened to me, it was omitted due to a miscommunication between HR and recruiter.

I just had to mention it and it was fixed right away. Always read everything before signing!

DIVx0··on Why Are Movies and TV So Dark Now?
Going from an led (with local dimming zones) to OLED (LG C1) has completely changed how I feel about 'too dark' content on my home television.

I now appreciate scene lighting much more than before, so much detail is lost trying to balance back lighting to a room and comfort. I remember having to rewind a bit of a Mr. Robot ep because I started to notice trivial background details in a dark scene to the point I was distracted.

The experience was sort of like moving to a higher end surround sound system and clearly hearing everything.

DIVx0··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
As someone who lives in a region where snowfall and icy roads are common I know for a fact that traffic regularly flows at highway speeds in those conditions.

Level 5 implies "all conditions" so it follows an autonomous system should be able to safely operate along side human drivers. If a level 5 system cant keep up it would become a major hazard to non autonomous vehicles.

DIVx0··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
That's what I'm thinking would be required, infrastructure changes and not solely 100% onboard technology. 8 years is not enough time for cities to plan for and build enough of that infrastructure (not to mention, what to build?) for an automaker to commit to a level 5 car when they are already struggling with L3.
DIVx0··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
yeah.. I was not asking what L5 means.

I am genuinely curious to what technology, based on my assumption it grew out of today's tech, a car would need to have onboard to safely operate at L5 under all conditions.

DIVx0··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
I'm no expert but 2030 isn't very far away and I'd think that 2030 consumer level tech will be based off what is cutting edge today.

Can someone school me on how a level 5 system might work in a snow storm on icy roads at highway speeds in 2030?

DIVx0··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
OP Should have said "most don't need to do it." I live in Minnesota and its rare to see people use block heaters now days, folks that do are most likely doing it because their parents did. I know from first hand experience that modern ICE cars with proper maintenance will perform just fine in the extremest of Minnesotan winters.
DIVx0··on My journey for dual displays with my M1 Pro Mac (2021)
off topic but in a similar Mac and display thing. I have an LG UltraFine 5k monitor that I love. I also have two MBPs, one for work (2019) and a personal 16" M1 Max.

The monitor works great plugged directly into either machine however if I try to use any sort of DP 1.4 switch both machines will only see my 5k monitor as 4k. I've tried various cables, all of which say they are DP 1.4 certified.

Anyone in this boat with me?

DIVx0··on Ask HN: Anyone here have good material for learning how to sketch from scratch?
I tried a number of approaches, books, class rooms, DIY, etc. Honestly the only thing that really helped me get over the hump was simply practicing all the basics i've learned over and over again.

Doing nothing but exercises is not very fun so take the things you want to draw like people and landscapes and just get to work. You will probably be unsatisfied with your results but keep the fundamentals in mind and keep practicing.

This isn't a satisfactory answer but I think people who advocate for one basic creative program over another just found some fundamentals that clicked for them.

DIVx0··on Dogs experience a form of mourning when another dog in the household dies
Anecdotally I can agree with this. I recently had to euthanize one of my dogs who tragically suffered complications from anesthesia that caused him to waste away over a couple weeks.

This dog was only 2.5 years old and my older dog (6, both Great Danes) spent a couple months in a deep funk, not eating, sleeping all the time, always at my hip.

I'm a life long dog owner but I have never lost a young dog/puppy. It was very hard all around. Usually its the younger dogs experiencing the older ones passing and I like to think that they understand "the circle of life" in some intrinsic way.

Previous experience has shown me that older dogs tend to let us know when their time is near in some way or another. So we usually introduce a 3rd puppy around a year ahead of this time. I believe this helps survivors cope.

I wish there were some tools and techniques to learn to help my dogs cope in situations where we can't prepare and the loss is devastating and immediate.

Humans have tools for each other, what inter species tools do we have to cope with death?

DIVx0··on Alternator does not charge your car battery the way you think it does
Battery tenders are great things to have if you don't drive often enough to make up for natural discharging. Especially so if you're in a very cold climate.
DIVx0··on Show HN: Simula One – Portable Linux VR Computer
This is a really interesting project

I hope it succeeds and future iterations are either more affordable OR gains so much traction that its easy to justify the cost. At this price point I could only talk myself into it if the Simula was my primary computer which I think I'd have a hard time using it as such.

Anyway, I am probably one amongst many who are watching this space waiting for experience reports and emerging ecosystems from braver early adopters.

DIVx0··on Show HN: Simula One – Portable Linux VR Computer
looks like a bad link, this works: https://shop.simulavr.com/
DIVx0··on Ask HN: Has Gmail spam blocking taken a sudden nosedive?
So much low effort spam is making it through. I've had actual 90s era "help an inconvenienced Nigerian Prince" spam in my inbox several times the past few months
DIVx0··on Edina Minnesota latest suburb to roll out homeowner surveillance camera program
They were probably referring to the three alerts that came out for the single event last weekend. The first two were garbage, telling us to google it? Only the last had information people could actually use.
DIVx0··on Midwest Developer
Minneapolis is pretty small compared to "big" cities in other states but I do agree that this is an unlikely walk but a totally achievable bike ride.

Also the lake's native Dakota name has been restored and locals call it Bde Maka Ska

DIVx0··on Ask HN: What is the best privacy-focused video doorbell?
I use mine to keep track of when packages arrive AND to see what my dogs are barking at without having to leave my office. So far it has proven to be a useful tool.
DIVx0··on Ask HN: Any Artists on HN?
I dabble in ceramic arts (hand building mostly) and woodworking. Those two pursuits have a loose connection to my professional life in the sense that there are desired outcomes for a project and a lot of planning needs to go into the execution.

However, unlike my day job I use my hands to create a physical object vs digital. I find that to be _extremely_ satisfying.

I have also started creating generative art. The outputs are SVG that get plotted with an axidraw. I use various tools and frameworks for this:

* Kotlin - https://openrndr.org/

* Python - I'm writing a custom framework that suites my style

* Inkscape

* Adobe illustrator for the handful of things inkscape can't do very well

DIVx0··on Shaded Relief Maps in Blender
This is apropos. I am buying some land and wanted to model it to help visualize building site options. There are publicly available topomaps and some DEMs but there was also LIDAR data sets too.

I spent hours learning how to render lidar point clouds into maps using QGIS and some other tools. Very steep learning curve but it was fun to do. Now to apply what I learned with this to make some neat shaded maps too!
