Crazyontap··on Kotlin Compiler Crash Course
Kotlin is one of those things that I avoided learning for so long just because I didn't want to learn another new thing.

And one day I had to work on a project that was 100% kotlin and so i decided to do a 3 hour crash course on Youtube (actually watched it at 3x speed so it was really 1 hour) and once I grasped the basics it really made so much sense and I don't think I'm ever going back to writing Java classes anymore after having seen the light.

Same happened with xpath long back. So long I resisted learning it because CSS selectors did the job but once I reluctantly learned it it changes your whole way of thinking.

I think my fear of learning new things comes from coffeescript, something that actually had a negative impact and I would have better off not learning it which also made me scared of learning new technologies.

Crazyontap··on Show HN: Search inside YouTube videos using natural language queries
Can it work for more advance keywords like say, "traffic violation" where it spots a car jumping red light or pedestrian not using a crosswalk, etc?

It could be very useful to help with law enforcement.

Crazyontap··on Chick Corea has died
I've never heard of him even though he seems like such a legend. So I tried searching on Youtube and found a few tracks: Spain, Armado's Rhumba, You're everything, and Besama mama. Liked the last one a lot. I've never listen to jazz music before, but I'm starting today.
Crazyontap··on The endless browser wars
There is a new trend emerging in computing with the advent of Machine learning and that is, it is no longer sufficient to have talent/knowledge/passion/amazing team to create something. You need very deep pockets too.

I've been waiting for a WebspeechAPI implementation in Firefox for many years now but the only reason why I don't think it's happening is because maybe Mozilla lacks the funds to train the models for speech-to-text/text-to-speech, etc.

This gap will grow more and more as new machine learning features are introduced (e.g. natural lang page searching, better translation, etc) which would be very easy for Google to add to it's browser but very expensive for open source projects.

Crazyontap··on Apple Drops App Store Fees to 15% for All Small Developers
This is huge news. I hope they also make the registration fees one time instead of yearly.

P.S. Hope Google also follows suit.

Crazyontap··on Ramanujan's Easiest Formula
I don't understand what you mean. He couldn't have just come up with that huge equation on the page out of thin air?

Surely there would be a method for coming up with such assertions (maybe only known to him though)

Crazyontap··on $200k in sales from a $6k advertisement
Interesting product. Since this is kind of related what avenues do you guys (HNers doing SaaS) use for SaaS advertising nowadays?

I used to get good results from FB ads (AdWords never worked for me after 2012) but now FB ads are also a loss.

So wondering what other people are using for advertising?

Crazyontap··on A Pedometer in the Real World (2015)
> when you could still make money there.

What has changed since? Speaking as someone who has never written apps before but have also wanted to in my spare time, what has changed from before?

Crazyontap··on What Happened to XPath?
Xpath is so powerful for web scraping I just realized recently. I'd been using css selectors for my occasional scraping needs and never bothered to learn xpath until on day on a whim decided to learn at least the basics.

Man I can now write scrapers in 2 minutes that used to take me quite some time thanks to the power of xpath. Thing like ancestors, contains, the ability to chain, etc is so so powerful. I used to write so many hacks just to do the same with css before.

Crazyontap··on Yoga Woo
Really like this quote: "Yoga, therefore, fits into a more general phenomenon of marketing a specific intervention as if it has specific benefits, when in fact it only has generic benefits."
Crazyontap··on Vue.js Creator Evan You Interview
Whenever people mention how awesome Vue is, there is always a comment that nothing beats vanilla JS.

I recently I learned that it not always true. As a matter of fact Vue (and many frameworks) does a lot of optimization under the hood to keep your apps breezy.

For example when you're dealing with lots of data, One of such concepts is re-using input fields and DOM elements via keying. So if you are trying to render lots of input fields, Vue can intelligently reuse(1) the components so as to make minimal changes to the DOM (implementing this vanilla JS is possible but might require lots of efffort).

Crazyontap··on Tell HN: My HN app is rejected by Apple for showing Covid-related submissions
Sometimes I really wish we devs did to Apple/Google what we did when anti-net neutrality were forced on us to get this: unite and stop making apps and updates for one day to get more public attention to the 30% extortion and such arm twitting by these two companies.

If 10 big companies and thousand of devs joined Epic right now, Apple would be willing to bend a lot more than its current stance.

Crazyontap··on Heyyyyyyyyyyyy.com
Heyy anyone got an invite code to share please?
Crazyontap··on Docker to rate limit image pulls
- Its an alternative download solution

- There is no rate limiting for paid accounts or companies from what I see in the article.

Crazyontap··on Docker to rate limit image pulls
At least for Ubuntu and popular distros like mint you get super high speeds on torrent maybe because you have a peer in the same region.

Afaik Windows is also using this to install updates where it shares the download with others in the region (1) using p2p (though i may be wrong since i don't use Windows anymore)

Crazyontap··on Docker to rate limit image pulls
Honest question, but why can't docker use something like bittorrent to download images?

Most of us download our OS via torrents only, so we may as well download the images too if there was support for it.

Crazyontap··on Toshiba formally and finally exits laptop business
Same experience here. Those laptops have been really reliable.

A shitty courier company apparently loaded a fridge over one corner of my laptop while transporting it (don't ask why or how it happened) and the end result was the laptop broke at the corner (imagine loading 200kg on side of a fibre glass plate).

Long story short the hinge popped off, the laptop's display bottom totally teared up and yet lo and behold it's still working since the last 5 years. It looks like a Frankenstein laptop but it works flawlessly and never has given me any issues. My asus laptop on the other hand.. :/

Crazyontap··on Is the US about to split the internet?
I just wonder if the source of the problem are these "App stores" of the world.

If I could just download these apps like I download software for linux, it would be very difficult for the govt to enforce anything like this.

Tik-tok banned in India too and by ban it merely meant that the govt. forced Google / Apple to remove it from the play store. There is complete ban on torrent / porn sites in India but that doesn't stop anyone from visiting those either.

I think this is just one more argument against these central repos that are aiding censorship and political propagandas.

Crazyontap··on Why do electron shells have set limits? (1999)
Forgive me for posting this idiotic question in advance since I have very little knowledge of physics, but I have often been confused about one thing recently. From what I could gather a little isn't the whole electrons revolve in orbits thing proved false and outdated like universe is made of ether?

I heard that even the iconic atom logo is all wrong since it is proved that electrons don't revolve around anything rather come in and out of existence and present themselves in probability clouds. If that is true then why do we still keep talking about shells and energy levels?

Like I said my question may sound like a troll but I assure you it's not. Just want to know what's what.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Why can't we solve the app store monopoly problem?
Google services are a huge drain on the battery. Have ou ever tried to degoogle your phone? Such an amazing increase in battery life [1].

My stock android (samsung) was like having a parasite running on your hardware that eats your battery and maybe also tracks what you're doing all the time.

I wish there was another OS like what Linux is to Windows and Apple that had atleast the few basic apps like Uber, Youtube, etc. It is really the need of the hour

Crazyontap··on Bootstrap 5 alpha
As much as I hate AMP pages I have been forced to use it due to SEO reasons and bootstrap 4 sites aren't AMP comptabible as yet. They exceed the 50kb css limit by AMP.

There have been various attemps(1) to do it but nothing more be more amazing than to have in-built support for it.

Even if the AMP project is misguided mess the 50kb limit on css is still a good goal for mobile sites.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Is it too late to start creating content on YouTube?
No it's not too late, but since you've mentioned you want it to create a passive income a few points:

1) Youtube videos require SEO just like a webpage. You need to create backlinks to your video and maybe send some traffic to it to make it relevant. Brian deen has some very good videos on it.

2) Pay attention to the engagement metrics, bounce rates etc. It matters a lot for getting your video in search results.

3) Invest some time in peripheral things like a good thumbnail, video optimization, etc. The more clicks you get the higher it starts ranking.

4) Last but not least monetising video based on ads is not where it's at. Most successful Youtubers are often making more money with affiliate marketing (most) and sponsorships.

So when you want to create content for Youtube make sure your priorities are clear. Are you doing it to generate income or is it just a hobby. There are very different approach to both.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: What's the biggest time waste on your workday?
Taking a 10 minute break to make coffee or see what my daughter is doing which inadvertently turns to 30 mins to 1 hour since she won't let me go back, and if I just happen to watch tv during that time I end up wasting nearly my whole day.

It's the reason why I work very late nights now.

Crazyontap··on Building a Gaming PC for 100$: Is It Possible?
Thanks for the recommendation. Pc is not very old but graphics card surely is and I never upgraded it since I hardly play any games on it. Probably just gonna try this game once or twice.
Crazyontap··on Building a Gaming PC for 100$: Is It Possible?
Can it run GTA V with a config like this? I haven't played any games in a very very long time but since I got a free copy of gta yesterday, I may as well play it once.

What min gpu do you think will be good enough for it? Fwiw I have a ryzen 3500 / 32gb desktop but a very old graphics card (gt 710 2gb).

Crazyontap··on Let's guess what Google requires in 14 days or they kill our extension
This is a good extension but here is a cool hack I've discovered that let's you do this anywhere without any chrome extensions:

- Create a new whatsgroupp called 'ping self' and add your friend to it.

- Then kick your friend out from this group

- Open web.whatsapp.com and now you can access your messages, files, photos across any device anywhere, anytime! (telegram also does this and allows file up to 1gb)

Crazyontap··on How failures led to a SaaS [audio]
When it comes to making money on the internet: Don't Try to Mine Gold When You Can Sell Shovels.

From my own personal experience and from all the successful Indie hackers the easiest way seems to be idea that tell you how to genreate traffic / leads to your site. SEO software, Social marketing software, also lot of spam software like gmass, etc. This area seems to have the most success for quick growth.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
No they kept saying that the center of it is called singularity IIRC.
Crazyontap··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
What happens when you actually fall inside a black hole and what is the singularity.

I never really understood what happened really when the guy fell inside it in Interstellar and how come he started seeing all those photos. I just accepted it as Hollywood bs.

I know my question is based on a movie but would still like to know what will someone witness (assuming of course they somehow live)

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Programs that wasted you 100 hours?
I don't know man maybe you're right.. But just today I had to edit a small screenshot and draw an arrow from text to a button and after trying all sorts of things like downloading scm scripts from defunct sites to reading two9 tutorials I couldn't do it. Maybe I lack knowledge to understand it. I kinda wasted more than 20 minutes and still don't know how to make arrow. Would take me 10s to do it in PS (plus boot time of Windows).

Regardless I do appreciate the hard work the guys have put in. I feel like such an ingrate to make comments like this about free software. I guess it's time to find an online course and learn it properly and if I still don't get it then that's that.
