CraigRood··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
If the idea that whats on the public web is fair game, you kill the public web. I wonder if this is their plan?
CraigRood··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
Real-Verified is the next logical step. Twitter will being following suit very soon. That said, how does this add value to Meta? Isn't this just another indication that Meta through its products sees less value in actual relationships and more in algo-driven timelines? Snap seems to be the only social network left that is personal.
CraigRood··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
I'm really skeptical of Binance, whilst I would never accuse them of anything specific, I have no proof. Their structure, governance and business model combined with their refusal to meet basic regulatory requirements makes me feel uneasy.
CraigRood··on Austrian ISPs Block Cloudflare IP addresses after apparent court order
I will guess at the UK. Premier League have many court ordered blocks on ISPs in place.
CraigRood··on Android 13
Oh I appreciate its different, that's not my complaint, the UX is just a heavy learning curve that sours the entire experience for something that is actually a decent device. It feels like its built by engineers where having things a certain way makes sense to geeks, where as iOS is built by designers to work for the masses.

I suppose this is where I get the feel that iOS is more modern.

Pulling the app draw and searching battery doesn't work. I've tried it again. Not sure what I've done wrong. I can search in settings itself, but given I'm already half way there, I don't really need to search from there.

CraigRood··on Android 13
Personally I disagree. I've been using iPhone for 13 years, I have complaints sure, but it works. I got an Android Samsung Galaxy thing earlier this year as a work device - primarily to offload Teams, email etc of my personal device. The phone itself is good, hardware feels modern, but the Android 12 OS is just poor from top to bottom. It took far too long to work out some of the most basic features. Even today I find myself getting slightly lost or confused when looking for some hidden setting. Windows 10, OSX, iOS, you can search battery and go into the battery menu... my galaxy doesn't do that. I'm sure someone will tell me the Samsung version of Android isn't the real Android or some bollocks, but really, Android needs some serious work and little UI/UX tweaks wont cut it. The experience has shown me that my 4 year old iPhone is far more modern than a latest Android.
CraigRood··on Google Cloud (Europe-west2) is experiencing downtime
I’ve just lost my evening due to the Oracle Cloud, not their fault to be fair, and availability was good, but our apps weren’t happy with the performance.
CraigRood··on The Lightning Network: Turning Bitcoin into Money
Still need to be able to transmit and verify the blockchain, so network capacity and CPU. You also need decent IO to maintain an index.

There are benefits to scaling on chain, but as above, its not sustainable.

Encouraging transactions that don't need to be stored on-chain forever and a day would be better batched up. You can then at least still verify your address balances.

CraigRood··on Netflix’s big power clash and rivalries behind the crash
The UI/UX is the crux of the problem for me, and infact, the same problem with Amazon Prime.

They both have fantastic shows and films, I know because i've seen some of them, but they NEVER seem to show up in app. Instead, I get endless scrolling of the same shows I skip over every time.

The algo doesn't seem to learn (Not to say it doesn't but the perception). The UI doesn't have enough unique elements to drive the algo. What I mean is if I tend to watch 20min comedy shows between 9-11pm. Create me some blocks of shows that meet this criteria. So a rewatch, continue and a new show.

They need to allow the customer to feed in more data. Integrate IMDB, Trakt etc and farm this data to improve recommendations, even if they are shows/films outside of their catalogue. I have a feeling that the lack of "I've seen this before outside of Netflix" button and the simple thumbs up or down doesn't provide the depth in the data.

I get why they moved to the current rating system, the thread on here discussing it at the time was actually really insightful for someone who was learning algos at the time.

CraigRood··on Zelensky Compound NDA
I'm really not a lawyer but would any domestic US law help protect? Given that Ukraine is at war, it is a state secret, and Ukraine is friendly?
CraigRood··on Travel photos are underrated (2019)
I get your take, but I somewhat disagree. I have just come back from a 2+ week trip to Italy and every day I had my camera glued to my hand. Looking a the world with the desire to capture the shots allows you to see the environment in different way. You see the lighting, angles, details, emotions etc that I'm honestly not sure I would see otherwise. The nature or even the number of photos don't matter, but I love taking photos as a way of "absorbing it all".
CraigRood··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
Google is still my default as 9 out of 10 I get the answer I need quickly. Bing does my other 10% where Google provides junk or stale results.... Google Search really is declining. I'm tempted to move my default over to Bing for month or two just to experiment. On the Maps front, I'm really enjoying Apple Maps as it has less junk - I just want a map!!
CraigRood··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
Exactly, there's nothing really new here except the device being used. Risk to skimming with a phone is no different than a 3G enabled terminal. Ultimately you need a business account and legal agreements with a merchant - so in this case Stripe to start work and accepting payments.
CraigRood··on Ask HN: Alternate Email hosting to G Suite
Thanks for the tip on the emergency access card, I wasn't aware this was a thing! Sounds like I should be fine :)
CraigRood··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
I don't think its related to OP, but maybe to your experience. I have a friend that pointed out to me that Regular Coca Cola in both cans and bottles taste different between the product labeled as "Made in GB" to those that are not labeled as such, even with full UK labeling and identical ingredients. Once you pick up on it, you can tell straight away. I suspect UK cans without "Made in GB" are produced elsewhere in Europe, and has a slightly different recipe.
CraigRood··on Ask HN: Alternate Email hosting to G Suite
I've got a question if you don't mind. I'm set on moving to iCloud too for my domain as the only thing I really care about in the G Suite is just personal email via custom domain. Should I change the Apple ID of my account off my custom domain ? I can see a scenario where I can't access my iCloud because I need access to iCloud to verify the email.... I could move the domain records, but this won't be a 5 minute job.
CraigRood··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
If a sim is digital, couldn't Apple put the eSim into your 'wallet' for example? I appreciate that it's not currently designed like that, but given we are just talking bits, just because it's not a fully baked system yet, it can't be?
CraigRood··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?
I have accepted, but I have locked down all the other permissions in-app such as Contacts, Camera Roll, Location etc. Whilst this certainly won't stop them, I hope it makes some of my data less useful.
CraigRood··on Tesla second-quarter profits top $1B even as it struggles to handle demand
Apple point is probably the most important one to really understand Teslas role.

The car industry is going electric, fact. Phones are all touch screen, amazing cameras etc..

Tesla will be the 'fashion' brand everyone wants, and desires. Yes a Ford/Samsung might be nice, and have certain technical points that are better, but you won't be able to beat the end to end experience and desirability of Tesla/iPhone.

Tesla will be the status symbol that your Fords of the world can never be. Mercs are quite popular around these parts and are a status symbol today, but the premium on a Tesla, design, features and just pure speed tops all comparable Mercs.

CraigRood··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
I kinda understand them. I love Twitter but I have had a period of time where I fell out of love. For me, the 'algo' is poor and tends to promote the 'wrong' content, rather than informative and meaningful posts. Once start following the right people, the value you can get out is incredible. If you follow political or even brands/celebrities, you are going to have a bad time. At that point Twitter is used as nothing more than a way for those to promote themselves.

Follow positive, talented and creative folk, they will provide value back.

CraigRood··on Plaid paid people $500 for their employer payroll logins
IIRC, OpenBanking in the UK requires a re-auth every 90 days with the 2FA. I think thats a very reasonable balance, and means services don't have perpetual access.
CraigRood··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
The $15 is debatable, mempool.space is closer to $5 for confirming within 60 minutes, which is many factors faster than what Mastercard do in the traditional world.

I would argue though that the magic of Crypto isn't buying coffees. After Silkroad we have seen very little interest in using Crypto as money, and even with "high" fees, alternatives have not become desirable for their ability to transact cheaply. I would also point out that even the likes of Coinbase have a 0.5% fee before spreads. Using crypto over cash or card (at least in Europe) isn't a cheaper of faster process end to end.

IMHO Bitcoin IS an offshore account, and the ability to move wealth anywhere in the world, without a middle man, entirely permission-less and trust-less for even at $15 is a massive achievement. Don't get me wrong, it can be cheaper, but what Bitcoin can do, and how individuals from retail investors to publicly listed companies are holding Bitcoin its a massive signal in terms of whats actually desired.

CraigRood··on Kallithea – Self-hosted alternative to GitHub
I use Phabricator as a self-hosted Git. It's slightly overkill for what I need - it's more geared for team working, but It's really simple to install and maintain.
CraigRood··on Free for Developers
I'm interested in some feedback on this point too. I'm currently looking at what Oracle has to offer as it seems to be the most straightforward, and also seems to have a simpler pricing structure compared to AWS or Azure for the small addons I may need.
CraigRood··on Nyan Cat on the Blockchain
There's a big difference here in that NFTs as currently implemented are nothing more than an a trend. They don't have any actual value, or function. At least with BTC you could buy drugs.

What can you actually do with Nyan cat other than just sell it on to the next person. I can enjoy the image and I don't even own it.

NFTs are neat, don't get me wrong, but to have any value or use, they require an element of trust behind it.

CraigRood··on Bitcoincore.org removes Satoshi's whitepaper from website after threats from CSW
Block size argument has absolutely no relation to Bitcoin failing as a currency. Block size is some weird inside baseball argument that has little real world validity. Truth is, Bitcoin was never in a position to even fail, because it never succeeded in being a currency. Bitcoin only really got any attention because of Silkroad. Without the darkweb market place Bitcoin would be a fun little internet toy.

You can see this reasoning today in chains like Bitcoin Cash, these are cheaper, these do have larger blocks, but they have nowhere near the amount of currency transactions to legitimately call it a currency. These chains don't even pull in any extra load when Bitcoin fees start to creep up.

XT is not really worth talking about. It ended up being a failed power grab. BIP101 failed because both sides failed to work together, instead one side got upset and created a hard fork at the next opportunity. Then attempted to call themselves Bitcoin, knowing full well they didn't have the hash rate and subsequent proof of work.

CraigRood··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
These platforms exist for the purpose of capturing content that has been “deplatformed”.

>Speak freely and express yourself openly, without fear of being “deplatformed” for your views. Engage with real people, not bots. Parler is people and privacy-focused, and gives you the tools you need to curate your Parler experience.

Parler frontpage.

They have no intention of creating a real alternative to Twitter.

Lets be honest here, It's not like you can't have a conversation on Twitter either if your views are alternative. It's their hateful, harmful and offensive comments that will get them "deplatformed".

CraigRood··on Busiest hour ever in the history of Gov.uk 17M page requests just 21 5xx errors
17M page Requests in a single 1 hour block would suggest significantly more than 250 pages per second.

CraigRood··on How to Favicon in 2021: Six files that fit most needs
I have a somewhat similar feeling. Why has favicon.ico been made into a 10 page mess? It just feels like there's too much going on for something that should be so simple.
CraigRood··on PHP 8
Interesting, I had no idea. What could an individual like myself do to help this situation?
