I totally disagree that this is an exaggerated historic comparison. As someone who grew up in East Germany, all the measures which restrict the individual freedoms, which were put into place, over the years, make me sad and angry. And having historical examples which show the bad effects of such policies in a very striking manner is in my opinion a very useful shorthand, instead of elaborately discussing a policy (with an expected outcome). Especially the effects of Stasi methods are well researched, so they are a very useful comparison indeed.
I just wanted to pint out that what the article discusses has very close parallels to what we know about the "usefulness" of the same methods in e.g. East Germany.
This stuff is the hallmark of a police state.
> then all undergraduate parents
Can somebody explain why the University would email the parents? What do they have to do with it? The students are of age, right?
We are a small but very developer driven company. If you would like to work in your own pace, setting your own goals, you will feel right at home.
We are working on two Eclipse based open source projects: Eclipse NeoSCADA and Package Drone. If you have any experience with industrial protocols (IEC 60870, IEC 61850, DNP3, OPC, ...) and would like to be part of that, then please apply!

Just blast with full power a recording of ultrasonic bat noises to the turbines.
But as others pointed out, if you have physical access, of course you'll be able to do something nefarious.
Then, wind farms are offline all the time, for all different reasons, so this would actually not that big a deal (apart from the owner of course). And that you are able to hack into the protocols, it is not really surprising, since most of the stuff has no authentication at all. You could of course filter for the MAC addresses of the devices, but this is so much hassle for any maintenance personnel that I doubt that it is in place in that many places.
Additionally, at least in Europe, most of the wind farms are rather small, so we are talking about a few turbines at once. The large ones have actually often enough dedicated staff which will look after them.

I agree that tracking down problematic modules is difficult. And OOM Exceptions (due to leaks) are actually the only serious problem where we run into problems during runtime. On the other hand, even in these cases its often enough to just restart the single OSGi service (if you know which one).
For NeoSCADA it was definitely the right choice. We have servers running uninterrupted for months (if not years). And to be able to hotpatch a library on the fly, is really really great (although seldomly used).
> He says true but unpopular things. If you can’t talk about > problems, you can’t fix them.
My take on Trump would rather be, that he says false but poular things (popular in the literal sense, not necessarily what is popular in the media).
But I also discovered that an entire line of heat controllers is accessible via Modbus on the open internet. So if I want to shut down the heating for a few hundred appartment blocks, I could do that easily. And these are not actually old devices. There is even an app which you can download and control these.
I also would express your second paragraph slightly different. Each industry has its own preferred protocols and they are enhancing them and creating new ones. Additionally most companies offer OPC (UA) interfaces, thus making OPC the only protocol which is used over all industries. So if you want to interface with industrial systems, there is a good chance that the only thing you need is indeed OPC UA.
I would be interested, but that site only leaves me shrugging my shoulders.
Fun example: a customer of mine initialized a variable within a loop and that resulting program just didn't work as expected (which it did with the same code on my desktop with gcc). As soon as he moved the variable out of the loop the program worked as expected.

So a simple round robin scheme just doesn't work.
But somehow Weimar represents Liszt at his greatest.
I had to smile, in a way this is still the case. The open and immediate hostility is now more a skepticism. But there are a lot of reasons to stay in Weimar.
For the Hacker News crowd interesting is, maybe, that Weimar even has a hacker space: https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Maschinenraum
There are even start ups in and around Weimar (Erfurt, Jena, Ilmenau) although a lot of those is more traditional entrepreneurship in the optical or medical area, rather than software. But don't forget Intershop started in Jena and Prof Karlheinz Brandenburg, the inventor of mp3, is at the Technical University Ilmenau.
