Contortion··on Attention is all you have
On the other hand, the article was exactly what I expected from the title.
Contortion··on CoMaps: The Offline App That Guided Rescuers Without a Signal in Venezuela
The problem I have most of all with the routing is that it seems to default to my location as either the From or To value (whichever is the one I haven't selected). Once that's been chosen it's not immediately clear how to change it, all you can do is view the route. That's a fine solution when you're immediately looking to go somewhere, but it's not great when you're trying to plot a route between two places in advance.

I've been using CoMaps for a few months and only just discovered that if you choose another location on the map once you've got an initial route and select Route To/From, it then updates the current routing.

Contortion··on 11,000-year-old sculpture of man riding a leopard found in Turkey
I think you underestimate the amount of effort people are willing to put in to being juvenile or perverse.
Contortion··on Asus Bike Booster
Also an owner of a non-electric Babboe. We looked at converting it to electric but very few companies would actually do it and the one that we finally got to give us a quote basically said it wasn't worth it. They would've had to replace the whole brake system due to the higher speed of an electric bike. We ended up just buying a different electric cargo bike.
Contortion··on Show HN: Brolly, a plain-text weather forecast site
Is there a reason why the URL parameters are obfuscated? I think it would more user (and SEO) friendly to have at least the place names in the URL, e.g. brolly.sh/forecast/united-kingdom/yorkshire/york.

Still, great project! Definitely fulfils my desire for minimalism in all things.

Contortion··on Beagle: Git, URIs and all the dirty words
Agreed. I think the code examples in the article could do with showing before and after states of the branch or repo and maybe compare with standard git commands.

Even then I don't think the abstraction to HTTP verbs is necessarily a useful one as web requests and version control are two different mental models.

Contortion··on The Last Evolution, by John W Campbell Jr. (1932)
For anyone who isn't aware, the same author who wrote the short story the film The Thing was based on.
Contortion··on What if the browser built the UI for you?
I think OP has envisioned a situation half way between what we now have and what will soon be the actual reality and that his idea will just be quickly skipped over.

I don't think website design will go away, but I do expect that people will soon be ordering products and booking holidays through AI chats instead of doing it themselves, which will require the kind of manifests he's talking about, but will skip the UI layer completely.

Contortion··on Show HN: Channel Surfer – Watch YouTube like it’s cable TV
Reminds me of https://ytch.tv/ which I really like for its simplicity.
Contortion··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
Yeah, it makes searching for bug reports/help rather troublesome
Contortion··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
I had this problem and it turned out to be an upstream issue with MicroG which was eventually patched. If you have an error message you can search for existing issues on /e/OS' gitlab/forum.

Revolut stopped working for me for a while with the error that the bootloader wasn't recognised and rooted phones aren't supported. After about a month an OS update solved it.

Contortion··on Show HN: I remade my website in the Sith Lord Theme and I hope it's fun
My browser auto-declines cookies so I also had the same thought. On reloading I can briefly see a pop-over with a lot of text in it before it disappears, so I guess that is the cookie game I initially missed.
Contortion··on Some users have noticed settings that let Meta analyze and retain phone photos
And next to impossible to get rid of. I would much rather use Signal but convincing even privacy-conscious people to switch is an uphill battle.
Contortion··on Abusing Entra OAuth for fun and access to internal Microsoft applications
Microsoft documentation is a nightmare, it doesn't surprise me there are vulnerabilities.

I recently built an SSO login using Entra ID (which was thankfully single-tenant) and I basically had to keep randomly stabbing in the dark until I got it to work with the correct scopes and extra fields returned with the access token.

Trying to search for any kind of Getting started guide just took me to child pages several levels deep full of incomprehensible Microsoft jargon and hyperlinks to helpful-sounding but ultimately similarly useless articles.

Contortion··on PHP 8.5 adds pipe operator
Agreed. Like in JS and Java, it would be a lot nicer if the language itself had the chainable methods.
Contortion··on Ratfactor's illustrated guide to folding fitted sheets
If you never wash your sheets, you never have to fold them.
Contortion··on PHP 8.5 adds pipe operator
Basically what Collections do in Laravel.
Contortion··on Forced to upgrade
Fairphone guarantees 8 years of updates for the Fairphone 5.
Contortion··on Rider is now free for non-commercial use
I've tried VS Code and Haystack (based on VS Code) for writing PHP and I just couldn't stand it after having used PhpStorm. Basic things like copying variables, indenting, moving lines into if statements, multiple cursors etc. just aren't intuitive in VS Code when writing PHP and a lot of the things I can do in PhpStorm with the press of a button just aren't possible.

I really hope they move PhpStorm to the same payment model as Rider so I can also use it for my own non-work projects.

Contortion··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
Slightly similar bug in DuckDuckGo on Android, unmuting causes the video to buffer again but it then pauses itself and there's no way to unpause it.
Contortion··on OWASP Juice Shop: Hacking a Modern Web Application
Honestly, it's not a bad article. I'd not heard of OWASP Juice Shop and now I'm interested to check it out. The article also prompted me to look into how user input sanitising works in the framework I use. So all in all I'd say it's a positive addition to the internet.
Contortion··on Edinburgh, Scotland makes it illegal to advertise SUVs
Paper is environmentally expensive to produce and recycle. If it's worse than plastic is surely debatable but it's definitely not significantly better.

Contortion··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
Ah okay, that's pretty awful and explains the huge backlash. Thanks for the extra info.
Contortion··on Social engineering takeovers of open source projects
Mutually Assured Backdoors
Contortion··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
I didn't think having to create a PSN account was that bad to be honest. I'd have preferred them to back down about the NProtect GameGuard rootkit that comes with the game.
Contortion··on The failure of the Domino's 30-minute delivery guarantee
The one real downside is that learning to cook well at home spoils eating out - it sets your standards for what constitutes a good meal that much higher. If I'm spending €16 on a plate of pasta, it better be a lot better than I can make myself.
Contortion··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
You are correct. I was adding what I considered extra privacy-relevant information in response to GPs statement about WordPress sharing data with other companies, but the fact that I'd not heard of Beeper before unintentionally influenced my word choice.
Contortion··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
No longer as in for a new user that currently uses individual apps.
Contortion··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
Plus your messages will no longer be fully E2E encrypted. As per their FAQ (emphasis mine):

"For example, if you send a message from Beeper to a friend on WhatsApp, the message is encrypted on your Beeper client, sent to the bridge, which decrypts and re-encrypts the message with WhatsApp's proprietary encryption protocol."

Directly underneath that they also say:

"Using native end-to-end encrypted chat apps independently may be more secure than connecting to them to Beeper"

Contortion··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
I had a very similar experience when changing my email address. I went through my password manager to update my accounts and ended up liberally deleting all the accounts I don't use regularly. I honestly found it to be very 'freeing' and therapeutic.
