ConsiderCrying··on The Pen Hospital in Kolkata will nurse your broken fountain pen back
Ah yes, the logical endpoint of any quirky hobby - becoming so invested in it that your family simply has to smile and nod approvingly while they pray it doesn't spill over into the living room.

That said, if you're that skilled with a lathe, it should probably be considered a useful life skill.

ConsiderCrying··on 'I was misidentified as shoplifter by facial recognition tech'
It's perfectly reasonable to harvest thousands of photos of unknowing people and then accost them based on faulty software that can produce an erroneous match? How so?
ConsiderCrying··on Zebra remains on the loose in Washington state, officials close trailheads
They are, sure, but they're really fun and some of them caught on. I think it's the exact kind of funny little thing we should encourage, language doesn't have to be serious.
ConsiderCrying··on Zebra remains on the loose in Washington state, officials close trailheads
Wow, that is fascinating. I will have to use auto-translation but definitely saving these for an evening read, thank you.
ConsiderCrying··on Zebra remains on the loose in Washington state, officials close trailheads
This gives me a chance to bring up my favorite collective noun for a group of animals: a bloat of hippopotami. Although a "dazzle" of zebras comes a second close. One of my favorite quirks of English, don't think other languages have our penchant for giving animal groups special names.
ConsiderCrying··on China’s Moon atlas is the most detailed ever made
$400, damn. Although, to be fair, that book does look to be the size of a hefty fantasy trilogy. If the printing quality is up to snuff, it should be a gorgeous and very interesting read.
ConsiderCrying··on How to Juggle Priorities (2023)
This isn't a bad metaphor altogether and I appreciate that the post advocates for one thing that all too many such ideas ignore: talking to people and asking them what matters to them. You can never know if your kid finds something truly important until you ask them and damaging your relationship with your family is never worth the marginal or even huge successes at work.
ConsiderCrying··on Apple tells Telegram to take down protestor channels in Belarus
There's also the fact that any of those messages can be reported for doxxing or screenshotted to show proof that they're doxxing. Also, Telegram group chats are encrypted, just not E2E, so they've also likely been reported by people who visited them. They are public, after all. (Which seems like a puzzling approach when you're doing something illicit but that's a whole other matter.)
ConsiderCrying··on Show HN: Growing Wine Grapes in My Parents' Basement
Would you say you're aiming for the high end market or is that too risky of a venture, relying on reaching the appropriate and steep quality level, when the lower end would be easier? It seems like you've put substantial effort into this so I'm presuming you're shooting for the stars.
ConsiderCrying··on The internet needs our love
There's also this fun story [0], which was discussed here [1]. Fits nicely with Mozilla saying: "We’re here to prove that you can have an ethical tech business." Start by caring for your workers first, instead of giving pay raises to CEOs, under whose leadership the company's been struggling.

ConsiderCrying··on Six Figures in 6 days
It's not just luck because it's talent plus savviness plus the ability to spin your story. Sure, luck factors in but as anyone with a success story will tell you, it's never just luck unless you're talking about the lottery.
ConsiderCrying··on Covid vaccine makers commit to not seek approval until complete Phase III trials
Not sure why this got downvoted, it's not like the person is endorsing Russia's decision. I'm highly skeptical a country that refused to go on lockdown and underreported cases would make a safe vaccine faster than the rest of the world.
ConsiderCrying··on Could a tree help find a decaying corpse nearby?
The article kind of ends up not giving a conclusive answer to the question posed in the headline though, just a pet peeve of mine. It's really more about the possibility of a new technology helping and even that, as you've said, is a murky option.

The best way to use something like this is probably to find the remains if the murderer confesses and says they're buried "somewhere" in a certain forest. But that's such a niche use case.

ConsiderCrying··on I just lost 1,400 BTC
There's a reason why any site dealing with crypto has a dozen labels begging people to double-check addresses, divulge no information to strangers, don't trust anyone, etc. However, warning labels come on any product and people still manage to misuse them. No matter how many labels you plaster about being more careful with bitcoin, people will keep losing it to things like this.
ConsiderCrying··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
> Facebook can't read your WhatsApp messages

Are we sure it can't? Because WhatsApp is closed-source, its GDrive backups are unencrypted and Facebook's whole profit model is based around snooping. Unless they make the app open-source, I'm not trusting them even with a grocery list. People act like E2E is the be-all and end-all but trusting an incredibly shady company on its word is not something I'm comfortable with.

ConsiderCrying··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
Nope, hasn't changed and it's one of the things on my "feature wishlist". Really hope they add for at least small chats.
ConsiderCrying··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
Can we stop using 6-year-old info for apps that get updated monthly? The problems they have with MTProto have been patched literally 5 years ago, the only other criticism comes from a direct competitor, and they recommend WhatsApp despite the fact that it's closed-source and nobody can verify if its encryption truly works.

Facebook is planning to merge Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, which makes it even more awful of a choice.

ConsiderCrying··on How many pieces can a puzzle have?
The middle part is a bit too heady for me but I'm fascinated by this sentence in the conclusion: "I assume that you wouldn’t actually see a 999-piece puzzle because the lawyers would claim calling that 1000 was false advertising."

My soul wants to hope that nobody would be as crazy as to sue a puzzle company for having 999 pieces instead of an even 1000 but my mind is saying "duh, of course they would".

Wonder what the situation is like for those new types of puzzles that are circular or have irregular shapes. Those are probably easier to make into an even, pretty number but I feel like there would still be exceptions.

ConsiderCrying··on C.I.A. Lacing (2014)
Especially handy if you don't know the number of the person you need to contact or know their device has been compromised. No need to rely on technology when a simple trick will do the... erm, trick.
ConsiderCrying··on Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever
Ah yes, the perfect horror movie scenario. Honestly, if the office was pretty close to my home, I wouldn't mind going there every week on one or two days, just to break the routine of sitting at home. But happy to see the 5-day mandatory "go talk to your coworkers and sit in a cubicle" regime slowly being phased out.
ConsiderCrying··on We quit our jobs to build a cabin
Seems so as well but I have to admit, it's an awful lot of effort just to gain a source of content. Realistically, it's more likely that these are just creative people who followed the trend (which they freely note in the piece) and decided to go off-grid in a way.
ConsiderCrying··on Telegram files EU antitrust complaint against Apple’s App Store
Joining Spotify and Rakuten. Honestly hope there'll be more to come. The recent situation with Google and Danish record companies being in a stand-off and Google deleting Danish music from YouTube shows how bad things can get if left unchecked.
ConsiderCrying··on When Chevrolet Ruled Uzbekistan (2019)
Has it not changed at all since the article's publication a bit over a year ago? The author expresses hopes of the new leadership changing things at the end but I take it that didn't happen?
ConsiderCrying··on New iOS privacy feature may end an era of personalized ads
As others have pointed out, if you're being subjected to consumeristic propaganda, might as well make it non-targeted so there's less chance of you buying in. It's like being dipped in a tub full of insects. You could choose your favorite type of insect to be crawling all over you... but would that really make the situation that much better?

Personally, the only time I had mildly relevant ads was back when I had an account on Instagram. It served ads for local businesses that actually kinda matched my interests. The rest is just "oh, you searched for info on a long-dead general? Must be interested in WW2 replica medals, buy fifty!"

ConsiderCrying··on Head asleep, body awake
It's fascinating to me how the author describes this as a wondrous and curious experience. I feel like that's something that many people, me included, would imagine in a nightmare. Being awake but not in control, cognizant of your own self and body. That's something straight out of philosophical horror stories.
ConsiderCrying··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
That is 100% correct. Soon as Netflix and Steam became a thing, I pretty much stopped pirating. They are so convenient that pirating is actually a subpar experience. If you download a game, maybe there's a miner or malware in it. Download a movie and maybe it doesn't have subtitles or has visual artifacts aplenty. The only cases where I do that is if it's a media property that I particularly love. I download a copy and store it on an SSD to make sure I never lose it in case Steam loses the rights to the game or Netflix decides the movie isn't popular enough and takes it off streaming, etc. However, now that everyone and their grandma is going into streaming, it's turning into cable. So I'm really starting to eye the idea of pirating series and movies simply because I don't want to pay extra money to Disney just to watch Hamilton.
ConsiderCrying··on H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC)
H.265 seems to be gaining traction slower because many of the older devices, including laptops and some smart TVs don't support it. H.264 became ubiquitous for piracy since it offered tiny size and worked on older devices, making it the perfect choice for those in poorer countries where tech isn't the first priority in a household. I wonder if H.266 will run into the same problems as H.266.
ConsiderCrying··on Tell candidates what to expect from your job interviews
> I think that seeing how someone reacts unprepared is a lot more valuable then seeing their work with them knowing what to expect

But why? The odds of them facing unexpected tasks on the job aren't that high, they have their job description, they have their set of skills, you delegate tasks based on that. It's not like there are curveballs coming every week where they have to upend their knowledge and strategies. It might be good to see how they act under pressure but seeing the person comfortable and putting in their best work helps evaluate how beneficial they will be to the company.

ConsiderCrying··on Declining eyesight improved by looking at deep red light
The paper also talks about improving retina sensitivity alongside color sensitivity, aren't these two different methods? How relevant is the former?
ConsiderCrying··on Silurian Hypothesis: Were There Civilizations on Earth Before Humans? (2018)
Possibly because nobody who actually reads scientific articles recreationally or for work will read the comments or at least won't consider them a serious discussion. However, leaving the comments off would likely cause those disagreeing to claim it's an "echo chamber" and push them to spread the article with quote tweets about how bad it is, causing much more of a storm. Letting people air their crazy theories is easier than having to deal with them getting built up until your publication is flooded with letters asking to stop whatever perceived malicious agenda you've got.
