CommitSyn··on Unidentified anomalous phenomena – Independent study team report [pdf]
Hessdalen lights yes but they, like UAPs, have flaps. Now they are very rare so it's hard to study when they are seen so rarely but there has been a team doing it for many decades now.

Ball lightning is also very rare. So I think the commenter was talking about everyday things that happen with fair regularity, but not to put words in their mouth.

Edit: However, I will say that "explained" in the commenters case does not necessarily mean "explained correctly." Mick West with his Seagull theory for example -- he had the singular video and "explained" the video with an example that fits into our worldview, while the military still has the RADAR, multiple sources of video, and unedited (downconverted) HQ footage and sensor data which would likely monkey wrench his seagull theory very badly.

CommitSyn··on Ask HN: Are there good Cloudflare alternatives? e.g., edge cache, firewall
DDoS-Guard has many similar services. Based out of RU. Seems to be used by questionable services more so or a similar amount to Cloudflare. Only briefly looked into them but had trouble understanding pricing structure and what came with what. Ended up using CF.
CommitSyn··on FM radio wave-based early earthquake detection (2021)
Noob question. Any properties of FM at a high or strange combination that could cause lights in the lab? If so, could they be elaborated on to help explain the Hessdalen lights phenomena? Can radio waves of any combination/form/output/etc generate anything close to plasma? or non-plasma lights?

My thinking is along the (fault) lines of earthquake lights, maybe not related to the Hessdalen lights.

CommitSyn··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
It means it runs through iMessage. Whether the "turn off iMessage" feature is enough I don't know. But if turning off iMessage actually stops any messages and SMS/MMS etc from running through iMessage at all, it's a pretty decent bet.
CommitSyn··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
Not today, anyway. Otherwise we'd still have jailbreaks, which were zero-day exploits used knowingly and non-maliciously.

Apple hired at least a few of the best jailbreakers.

404. That’s an error.

The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know.

CommitSyn··on U.S. Department of Defense Launches All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office Website
While Mick West thinks it was Seagulls from the 1 video, the DoD has all sensor recordings and likely more videos, which were not leaked, and likely do the heavy lifting to disprove the seagull theory.
CommitSyn··on FDA approves multiple generics of ADHD and BED treatment Vyvanse
I used to be in the former group. I'd take. 120-200mg/day to program and "get stuff done" (hundreds of unfinished programs)

Thankfully a decade later and I'm in the latter, typically don't take my full dose so I always have some left come next refill.

CommitSyn··on FDA approves multiple generics of ADHD and BED treatment Vyvanse
Giving an addictive stimulant to food addicts

That'll work greeeeat.

Then again if I remember correctly, Vyvanse isn't something you can get a continual high from like traditional amphetamines. : I may be completely mis-renembering that.

CommitSyn··on Authentication on meet.jit.si
You don't. Because you can't. Those illegal things are going to exist as long as there is a market for them. All you can do is ensure that the general public who doesn't wish to partake isn't exposed to it without looking.

Basically, you don't want your grandma finding the drug list or hacking tools unless she's specifically trying to find it. But it's going to exist, so let it exist (or rather, try if you wish but it's futile). Similar to tor hidden services and i2p eepsites.

CommitSyn··on “AI has turned every WiFi router into a camera that can work in the dark”
I remember something similar from years ago but this is more recent: https://www.zmescience.com/feature-post/technology-articles/...

> For their demonstration, the researchers used three $30 WiFi routers and three aligned receivers that bounce WiFI signals around the walls of a room. The system cancels out static objects and focuses on the signals reflected off moving objects, reconstructing the pose of a person in a radar-like image. This was shown to work even if there was a wall between the routers and the subjects.

It's the unfortunate battle of those who want to provide privacy, and those who want to use the privacy to do illegal things that will either get said things shut down, or cost them a lot of money (or freedom).

Having been on both sides, we need more decentralization and a way to disconnect From those decentralized points. Not much else can be done besides a never ending game of cat and mouse.

CommitSyn··on MOVEit, the biggest hack of the year, by the numbers
> Zero

> This is the amount of government data that Clop claims to hold on government, city or police services. In a post on its dark web leak site, the gang said it would “do the polite thing” and delete all government-related data. Clop has not provided evidence for this claim, nor has TechCrunch been able to verify its claim. “We are only financial [sic] motivated,” the hackers wrote.

The polite, honest, financially motivated attackers are back at it again.

Hey, you have no contact method in your profile. can you email me at my contact email in my profile? I have a question from a previous discussion we had.
CommitSyn··on Godaddy just stole my domain
By "sells domains at bulk price" do you mean they sell them to you, the customer, at the wholesale price they buy them from the registry?
CommitSyn··on Lemmy now has over 2M users across 915 instances
> I want a community for my football club, but there are already 3 across multiple instances - which one do I join?

I would use the community browser at https://browse.feddit.de/ to find the most populated and active community, and stick with that one. If the other 2 aren't very active, maybe make a post in those communities letting them know there's a more active community at X.

CommitSyn··on Lemmy now has over 2M users across 915 instances
I was having major issues getting federation to work while using the mobile web app. Now that I installed Connect for Lemmy (android) tonight, I finally have a seamless experience subscribing to and interacting with communities from all over the fediverse.

It's a brand new technology and system, for the most part. Give them time to make it more user-friendly. It's worth it joining and participating now IMO, but I think in 6 months or a year it will be MUCH more friendly to the average Joe.

CommitSyn··on Self-published Ansible book – 87k copies, 300k revenue, 41 revisions
This is the second time I've seen this today. I'm a hobbyist hacker and do small projects. I'm still SSHing into servers to install and configure things. How does it work with cloud infrastructure... Do you not SSH into your server in the cloud and install things? Do you just rely on ready-made scripts to run what you need?
CommitSyn··on Ask HN: Is GitHub down?

CommitSyn··on Valve is not willing to publish games with AI generated content anymore?
I wonder how automated their system is. They obviously wouldn't boot the game up and start walking around because they can just extract the media files and check. But I'm curious if there is a system that identifies copyrighted images/video stills and searches for copyrighted words.

CommitSyn··on Pixar was never a masterpiece factory
I was visiting with a therapist at the time and they were encouraging everyone to watch it if they could. It touched on a number of intrinsic but commonly overlooked things that most people never think about, but also went pretty deep into our current understanding of the mind in some parts.

CommitSyn··on Hans Niemann's $100M Defamation Lawsuit Dismissed
> Niemann has admitted to using an engine in some online chess matches when he was a teenager. A disturbing amount of internet people seem to believe this is enough cause to indefinitely ostracize him from society

This is baffling to me. What curious person wouldn't check out the tools that can be used for their interests?

CommitSyn··on Reddit makes it impossible to delete PII, refuses to do it itself violating GDPR [video]
It's not "revisionist history", it's what happened. I was on Reddit for 3-4 hours each day and watched the entire thing very close. It was a way to show reddit admins who they're giving the middle finger to, and what reddit will look like when those people are gone. There's a reason it was called a "blackout" and not a "protest"... The protest wording only came up once the blackout had already started.

So really, the "protest" is your revisionist history.

CommitSyn··on Reddit makes it impossible to delete PII, refuses to do it itself violating GDPR [video]
In the beginning it wasn't meant to be a protest. It was meant to be a blackout to show everyone 'this is what reddit is like when the people you depend on leave' and make everyone aware of the issues, and it accomplished that in a massive way.

The protestors were the ones doing it until the proposed API changes were called off, but of course reddit smashed that by shutting down communities and replacing mods.

CommitSyn··on Ask HN: Does anybody not use an adblocker?
I would prefer not to, as I'd like to support the websites I browse. However, the privacy issues that come from invasive tracking that ad networks do is something I can't support.
