CoffeeOnWrite··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
Um that was 11 years ago.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Why don’t we do email verification in reverse?
You are right of course in one sense, but look at the comments here! If the HN crowd is still sending verification links rather than codes to be copy and pasted, that implies regular folks are still clicking the links..
CoffeeOnWrite··on BART’s excursion fare: Agency earns millions from passengers not riding trains
Clipper has its own way to request a refund. They refund first-time excursion fees no questions asked.
CoffeeOnWrite··on BART’s excursion fare: Agency earns millions from passengers not riding trains
The sticker is just a plain sticker. I would assume they'd let you put it on an alternate surface..
CoffeeOnWrite··on BART’s excursion fare: Agency earns millions from passengers not riding trains
Neat link. From BART’s tweet response:

> You can request an excursion fare refund with Clipper.

This is true and wasn’t mentioned in the article, but should have been.

> You show the sticker at the next reentry to get in without tapping again

I’ve been doing this for years and never seen this. 100% of the time they want to fix the card and peel the sticker off at the outside window, then ask me to tap in at the turnstile.

CoffeeOnWrite··on BART’s excursion fare: Agency earns millions from passengers not riding trains
You’re correct. When you try to enter next the turnstile will error out with “see agent”. That’s when they fix your card and peel the sticker off. Which highlights the total ridiculousness: they’re asking riders to see an agent twice!
CoffeeOnWrite··on Fake Dog for Home Security
For sure. I’d bring a gun, personally.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Fake Dog for Home Security
I met an older Australian woman that sailed around the world solo, and swore by the fake dog for scaring off opportunistic pirates. She didn’t carry a gun or other weapon. Just a cassette tape on repeat when anchored.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Mechanics invent an axle that can achieve steering angles of up to 80 degrees
The article title says 80 degrees. My layman understanding is rotating in place means 90 degrees. Correct me if I'm wrong.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Love the smell of old books? This bookseller would like you to leave
Off topic but do you just love wine and pleasant social spaces, or is there something about the whole wine bar experience in particular that makes it special, especially compared to other kinds of bars and cafes?
CoffeeOnWrite··on Show HN: Logto beta – build universal sign-in, auth, and identity with ease
Link to demo please? I grepped both GitHub page and official site for "demo" but came up empty.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Smart thermostats inadvertently strain electric power grids
Just curious, is there a term more inclusive than demand response that accounts for generation-side factors like weather and fuel economics/logistics?
CoffeeOnWrite··on Twitter Layoff Started Today
As discussed upthread, 401k loans are not generally accessible to unemployed people.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Why walking on Legos hurts more than walking on fire or ice (2018)
Or keep your floor free of sharp things and relax, even stumbling around in the middle of the night. It’s not hard - the kids legos things being an exception.

Banks still want to see evidence of your ability to pay it back.
CoffeeOnWrite··on Twitter Layoff Started Today
Maybe, but have you tried getting a loan approved with no income?

CoffeeOnWrite··on The great Silicon Valley shake-out
Neat, thanks for sharing, this was new to me. But easily corroborated, eg https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/15/powell-says-the-fed-could-hi... (get it together CNBC, heh!)

> An interest rate increase on the order of 2% is laughably small

This hurt my head to read. It's 200 basis points, which doesn't sound generally laughably small (and is materially not generally laughably small; see sibling comment). Using "2%" is unnecessarily liable to give wrong impression. Of course, your argument still stands.

cf. Powell's quote in https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/15/fed-hikes-its-benchmark-inte... for example

CoffeeOnWrite··on Golden Gate Bridge construction – and indignation (2012)
Ty! I took too literally the word “automatic” and stopped reading.

Wonder how long before they try to use ML instead of the human judgment..

CoffeeOnWrite··on Golden Gate Bridge construction – and indignation (2012)
Something to note is they have “automatic gates” that are supposed to prevent overnight pedestrian access while allowing overnight bicycle access. Can anyone share how these gates work in practice?

> Most JetBrains products are super slow, and resource hogs

> These days I am mostly using VsCode for development

Please qualify the difference in speed between JetBrains and VS Code. From my perspective, they are both “super slow” and “resource hogs”.

CoffeeOnWrite··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
Heh, we brewed desktop kombucha under a cardboard box at my big tech co. Facilities staff were very kind to us when it exploded during the Covid lockdowns..
CoffeeOnWrite··on Anti-Abortion Centers Find Pregnant Teens Online, Then Save Their Data
Police are peace officers with sworn duty bestowed lawfully and transparently by the state and supported by agreed upon best practices. I see no ethical qualms with courageously taking out the shooter.

Private citizens conspiring to trick other private citizens, is not in the same ballpark or league.

CoffeeOnWrite··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
Love this but let’s go deeper here. “Tell me about the coffee situation.. what coffee do the team members that drink coffee drink day to day, and where does it come from?”

As a consultant once on a due diligence gig at a medium-sized quasi-tech company in the Midwest, on the day I arrived, one smart and charming QA engineer took me aside and shared “the free coffee in the micro kitchens is crap, here’s our [employee-provided] coffee pot on a filing cabinet in the corner, please drink as much as you want”. That told me, among other things, this was a decent team in a mediocre company..

CoffeeOnWrite··on Anti-Abortion Centers Find Pregnant Teens Online, Then Save Their Data
The comment you’re replying to describes a bait and switch “counseling clinic”. Cf. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/pregnancy-clinics-...

The moderate pro-life crowd should see this behavior as scummy and denounce it, as it taints their cause. IE take the high road to attaining their goals. Those in support of this behavior, have more deep ethical challenges, and I sincerely hope and believe are not the majority of pro-life voters..

(Using “pro-life” reluctantly here, to avoid distractions)

Edit to add: my intent by this comment is to depolarize. It’s frustrating to see child comments from the pro-choice side that don’t take my hint :/ Let’s not engage with the extreme on either side folks, if we want to better understand the opposing points of view. Yes, the loudest voices are often the most extreme, and no the moderates don’t denounce (on both sides!), but we can try to do better on our beloved HN.
