CodeSheikh··on Apple will attempt to jam Facebook's web-tracking tools
"aren't allowed ad-blockers by company policy and look at Ads by force". Extreme!. Do you mean people working for ad agencies?
CodeSheikh··on Apple will attempt to jam Facebook's web-tracking tools
I would be more than happy to pay for a premium Facebook and premium Google where 0 tracking bytes are harvested about my activity and I just use their product as it is. But we all know that as much as some people sitting in the boardrooms of these companies would want a premium service model too they will never allow it. Tracking users make them money on multiple folds that premium revenue stream would be a chump-change for them.
CodeSheikh··on Apple will attempt to jam Facebook's web-tracking tools
I have been actively using Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and I do most of my shopping online. What always boggles my mind is that how do advertisers make money? I don't remember the last time I actually saw an ad on Facebook/Google, liked the product so much that I instantly bought it. Everyone I know in my circle would agree and comply with me.
CodeSheikh··on Hello, GitHub
"I’ve been a developer since I was six". I would love to learn what sort of projects were kids working on this early back in the 80s.
CodeSheikh··on iOS 12 introduces new features to reduce interruptions and manage Screen Time
I welcome this feature. Knowing that my kids will be brought up in the age of iDevices (whether I like it or not), having a "digital guardian" like Screen Time will be of great use and can be made part of your family life naturally vs imagine abruptly introducing this to todays teenager's life.

Plus, it is a great tool for self-management as well. Weird a couple of weeks ago we were having quite a debate among co-workers about the lack of such important feature in todays smartphones. Sure there is already a similar feature in current iOS to view battery usage by app but it is not intuitive and requires quite a drill-down in settings.

CodeSheikh··on Microsoft acquires Github
Besides GitLab, is it also worth looking into Bitbucket free tier? I am just curious where the trend will go as far as porting of projects goes? I am guessing a lot of BIG NAME devs are going to jump the ship.

One thing Microsoft failed to comprehend is that if you want to be all buddy-buddy with open-source community then don't go out and buy the condo they are renting in and lay out new rules.

CodeSheikh··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
I guess it is time to release all those diamonds from the vaults that they have been hoarding for decades. It is funny/ironical how man-made diamonds satisfy all "C's" criteria whereas mostly naturally occurring diamonds have some flaws.

CodeSheikh··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
Fast Forward 10 years: "and that's how decentralized internet was born"
CodeSheikh··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
By any means I am not a fan of GDPR.
CodeSheikh··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
Did you just compare a data privacy law with some hypothetical obscure privacy law? Amusing. Per your analogy, if German website still wants to be shown in SA then either they get SA govt on board with w/e content they are serving (bare knees in this case) or they stop traffic coming in from SA altogether or they simply comply with SA local laws and censor content (bare knees). You should do some research on how US based website show content in Chinese region.
CodeSheikh··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
Does your website serve users from EU region or do you intend to block incoming traffic form EU? If you serve them then you might want to collect some data points about them. It is like being on the internet you are by default given a chance to operate business (website in this case) in whatever country a user access your website from. You are not going to open a franchise in Germany and not abide by their local laws concerning about German shoppers right?
CodeSheikh··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test (2016)
Yes this guy might have an inflated complexion of a self-claimed all-star but to be honest Google and all big tech companies have really frustrating recruiting process and most of the time interviewee's frustrations go unheard. So this guy took the only approach that he could think off, is to take his plea to the internet.

Problem a) mistrust issues in relationship

CodeSheikh··on Facebook denies it collects call and SMS data from phones without permission
From FB official statement: "When you sign up for Messenger or Facebook Lite on Android, or log into Messenger on an Android device, you are given the option to continuously upload your contacts as well as your call and text history."

Why FB needs users call and text history in first place? These privacy options are enabled by default when you install Massenger app and majority of the people are not aware of these privacy settings on their phones. And even if you alter a privacy setting on you phone then upon next update of the Massenger application it gets reset to defaults! And we all know the high frequency of app updates. It is like all of these are part of a bigger systemic issue and it smells foul play.

CodeSheikh··on Zuckerberg on Cambridge Analytica situation
Basically all I see is a blame game on CA and that researcher. For the sake of brevity, when someone is hosting a REST API web server at Facebook, did not they notice a large number of requests coming from a certain app id (3rd party dev) for a certain type of data (user, his data, his friends, their data and so on)? At that point you knew what exact users were compromised, 5 or 50 million. And then CA came back to your platform and bombarded those same users (or subset of those users) with their propaganda ads etc. Point being, there were data foot prints left when they pulled the data for those specific users and their were data foot prints left when they came back for those users. Facebook is not Techcrunch that you don't care much about the nature of traffic coming in b'coz it is a blog. Facebook is where people literally share their every day life activities. I am assuming that there should be some smart self-governing systems in place at FB platform that would raise flags when such type inward/outward traffic gets generated.
CodeSheikh··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
This data breach is different in nature. It is not same as Ashley Madison or Experian where someone got hold of root pwd or some other data storage (some form of hacking involved). This is about third party using Facebook's API to access user data and exploiting those API to retrieve hoards of information about a particular user. IN this case, Facebook most likely knew which third party developer was heavily hitting a certain API in a certain pattern but they decided to turn a blind eye.
CodeSheikh··on IBM Cloud Developer Console for Apple
Is that a printer jam example? If yes, then is Apple using a "printer jam" example to showcase it's ML chops in-collab with the Big Blue?
CodeSheikh··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
I see a lot of Facebook sympathizers here. Is this what devs do at Facebook? Browse HN and defend the reputation of Facebook at any cost? Yes we all knew what we were in for when we signed up for Facebook and Instagram. Yes, they can sell our data to show us ads about what coals to buy for July 4th bbq party and we are OK with that. But not to turn blind eye to foreign entities which in return use it against us and jeopardize the American democracy and social fabric.
CodeSheikh··on Google Flutter and AWS Lambda for a serverless mobile app
Nice and very concise tutorial but it generously missed the entire AWS Lambda section (and how much pain it is to work with, IAM setup, API gateway setup, SDK support etc etc). Perhaps the author wanted the focus to be on Flutter and less on backend (AWS Lambda in this scenario).
CodeSheikh··on MoviePass CEO says the app tracks your location before and after movies
They can't be collecting data continuously if the location privacy setting is set to "While Using the App" on iOs. I remember Uber removed "While Using the App" option and provided only "Never" and "Always" options. And they got a lot of heat because of that.
CodeSheikh··on Spotify Form F-1

CodeSheikh··on Tech takes over: New York is the sector's second city
I am not surprised to read this and also not sure what makes this article/publisher the assumed authority to christened NYC as #2. After Silicon Valley one might argue that Seattle has better tech than NYC but again NYC always has breadth and depth of diverse markets such finance, fashion, ads, hotel, food, law and education to name a few. Not to mention, easy access to EWR/JFK/LGA airports from European continent makes it easier for people to come here and get involved.

CodeSheikh··on Trump administration cracks down on H-1B visa abuse
It’s funny how people are criticizing USCIS here (not that it is not to be blamed for lacking) and not their fellow Indian men for running such consultancies in the first place and exploiting talent backhome and luring them here in hopes for green cards before they realize it’s close to impossible and by that time these consulatancies middle-men would have already milked them enough. Creating awareness among Indian backhome is first step in discouraging consultancies abusing them. US has always been an open market for anyone to come here, take advantage of it and make ones dreams come true. US educated Indians stuck in green card queue is not entirely because of USCIS ineptness but also Indian “consultants” clogging up the queue. It feels there should have been a separate visa category for these “consultants” altogether.
CodeSheikh··on Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund (2008)
For #8. Dating, it has progressed pretty significantly with the likes of OkCupid, swipe-based apps (Tinder, Bubmle, Hinge), CMB to name a few. Heck it has done so well that IAC spun off its dating group as a separate business entity with its own IPO of The Match Group.
CodeSheikh··on Performance Benchmark 2018 – MongoDB, PostgreSQL, OrientDB, Neo4j and ArangoDB

CodeSheikh··on How Apple Plans to Root Out Bugs, Revamp iPhone Software
I wonder if the mixed reviews of iOS 11 have led them to do such major overhaul. Say if iOS was responsibility of one software dev team, and they recently hired a new project manager to overlook iOS 11 development and release then I would definitely transfer that PM somewhere else in the corp along with QA guys.

For example that bug "typing the letter 'I' autocorrects to an 'A; with a unicode [?] symbol instead" might not be that big of a deal, but as we all noticed how such minute change had drastic ripple effect in entire Apple's ecosystem.
