CleaveIt2Beaver··on Claude’s C Compiler vs. GCC
And all these improvements past 1935 have been rendered irrelevant to the daily driver by safety regulations (I'll limit this claim to most of the continental US to avoid straying beyond my experience.)
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Top downloaded skill in ClawHub contains malware
What is it about this kind of post that you guys are recognizing it as AI from? I don't work with LLMs as a rule, so I'm not familiar with the tells. To me it just reads like a fairly sanitized blog post.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on ICE and Palantir: US agents using health data to hunt illegal immigrants
Isn't that moving the goalposts? The comment you were asking under specifically said these arrests were made without obtaining a warrant.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on The Collapse of the FDA
We get it, all lives matter.

The point they're making is that $currentAdministration ran specifically on a platform countering this behavior and have failed to keep those promises, whereas others which ignored it simply did not mention it.

CleaveIt2Beaver··on Scientific American's departing editor and the politicization of science
Not to mention that Spock is consenting to his fate in taking on the role of "the few... or even the one." He's clearly rationalizing, not stating a universal constant.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
This is the nuance I wish more people (and especially the articles reporting this info) brought to the table. Not necessarily something everyone would consider at first blush, but very important contextually in contrast to the "why tf would they never want automation ever?" reaction.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Children should be allowed to get bored (2013)
Trying to argue around the circumstances of a one-line anecdote is peak HN. Your experience of the world doesn't invalidate theirs, and vice versa.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on United States discloses nuclear warhead numbers; restores nuclear transparency
When Canada was on fire last year, we had smoke all down the east coast. I don't know if it affected the temperature, but it sure affected the environment. it doesn't need to go full ashen-winter to fuck up plant growth cycles for farms and whatnot, I'm sure.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on 6 months ago, I left the bullshit industrial complex
But then you're just changing who gets disparaged from a technical expert to an emotional one. If you're offended by the term engineering, may I suggest scheming? I think that would better convey the nefarious aspect of the term.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
Arrowhead's CEO was on Twitter explicitly telling people to refund and leave negative reviews, as that customer feedback gives them more leverage to negotiate with when discussing reverting the unpopular change. But nice "what about the children".
CleaveIt2Beaver··on 64-bit bank balances ‘ought to be enough for anybody’?
Man, you and I remember Office Space differently! /s
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Overworked and underpaid, VFX workers vote to unionize at Marvel
> "I don't feel like it" doesn't sound like desperation to me. It sounds more like entitlement.

What a condescending attitude towards someone trying to break into a difficult industry, who has probably been aiming for this for some time, and likely went to college for that express purpose.

CleaveIt2Beaver··on Surges of cosmic radiation from space directly linked to earthquakes
I agree with this. As a layman, I've always understood "orders of magnitude larger" to just mean "way too big" and "exponential" growth to imply "out of control".
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Stop Calling Each New Disaster “The New Normal”
What crops do you grow in those conditions?
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Remote work brings hidden penalty for young professionals, study says
I can't stress enough how refreshing it is to see this take on HN. The usual rise-and-grind crowd always seem to dominate the discussions - likely because they have that investment (emotional and professional) in the first place; I don't want to invalidate anybody by saying this - so it at times feels alienating to read these threads.

I don't want to be friends, I don't want to constantly be growing and mastering my field, etc; I want to be good at what I do, fulfill my objectives for the day, and leave it at the desk when I go home.

CleaveIt2Beaver··on One economist went on a long whimsical journey to pay his taxes with cash
They're free to waive your debt rather than accept payment.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on When Google paid websites to promote Firefox
I don't know if you realize this, but moms are actually people, and can exist in all sorts of situations. Go figure.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
Probably the problem that persists in the modern day, because it remains relevant.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on The Browser Company’s Darin Fisher thinks it’s time to reinvent the browser
I don't think I'll be trusting the folks at Arc with reinventing the web GUI when the Arc landing page is so pretentiously ugly.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Office vacancy rate in San Francisco just hit a new high
> Another way to put it: "why use part of your home for work space, and pay for your worktime utilities, when your employer should pay for that?"

If you're working from home, you should be writing off that office space come tax time, which should offset the utility cost.

CleaveIt2Beaver··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
Put 'em in a ziplock. Pull out the top drawer of the dresser. Tape baggie to back interior. Replace drawer.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
I've seen several memes presented to me by Facebook, since it's normally the kind of content and subject matter I'd consume, counseling people to not even "hate-watch" it. So there is some variety of blind opposition or boycot afoot, and shockingly, the comment sections very frequently come back around to color-blind casting.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Riding transit takes almost twice as long as driving (2017)
> you know what they say about the road to hell…

...you're forced to use mass transit!

CleaveIt2Beaver··on The night I met Einstein (1955)
Hey now, nobody said anything about reading French! ...I think. :P
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Ericsson workers were kidnapped when telco sent them to negotiate with ISIS
All the Zorg oldies but goldies.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Google Drive flags file only containing “1” for copyright infringement
But do they own an NFT of an 0?
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Alexa suggests lethal challenge to child
The one where a dying serial killer uses a voodoo ritual to turn into a doll and stab people?
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Google engineer who criticized company in viral comics on why he finally quit
> "the other demonstrably false"

Go on... Demonstrate.

CleaveIt2Beaver··on Python for Excel: A Modern Environment for Automation and Data Analysis
Really? I work for a <50 employee manufacturer/distributor, and we're pretty firmly locked down. If people want to _update Java_, they need an admin password.
CleaveIt2Beaver··on Mexico's Supreme Court has decriminalised the private use of cannabis by adults
Not to mention the fact that the very intent of a gun is to inflict harm on others, where a drug is an inward-directed substance, harmful or not.

Very few people choose to get shot. A lot of people choose to take drugs. The person in front of me shooting heroin is unlikely to get me high. The person in front of me shooting guns is more likely to shoot me than themselves.
