Chronic51··on It’s a Tough Job Market for the Young Without College Degrees
Why do they love to go to school? To learn? No - they can do that with the Internet today. They want a higher paying job, nothing else.
Chronic51··on It’s a Tough Job Market for the Young Without College Degrees
The higher the stated minimum wage gets, the lower the real minimum wage gets. You can be certain all other expenses will increase and job benefits will decrease to compensate.
Chronic51··on Facebook sued for storing biometric data mined from photographs
Using only facial recognition cannot identify a person in the world. However, combined with one or two GPS points (photo geotags), you can get pretty damn close.
Chronic51··on Inside Palantir
Can confirm. Fake it till you make it. But with a really smart person who can fake extremely well.
Chronic51··on The pressure that U.S. inequality exerts on parents
Yes. We do the exact same with disabled students. Yet no one talks about them. I suppose because it is because "looking out for the poor" makes people feel good.
Chronic51··on The pressure that U.S. inequality exerts on parents
Damn, owned.
Chronic51··on It Depends What You Study, Not Where
You can learn how your roommates parents started a billion dollar company (i.e. How to be successful) at Harvard. You can't at your state school -- because your roommates are playing video games or went downtown for the night.
Chronic51··on It Depends What You Study, Not Where
Why does selection bias even matter? If you go to Harvard, you will make more than had you gone to a boring state school. Period. Is there selection bias? Yes. Does it change the fact the Harvard kid is wildly successful? No.
Chronic51··on Two Tesla Production Chiefs to Leave Ahead of Model 3 Ramp-Up
Waiting for the HN fanboys to defend Tesla.
Chronic51··on Poll: Apply HN Runoff – Which two startups should YCF fund?
I also voted for Pinboard. None of the other founders are credible...
Chronic51··on A Basic Income Should Be the Next Big Thing
Basic income except the rich and powerful cannot stop outside their home?
Chronic51··on A Basic Income Should Be the Next Big Thing
Dirty jobs will pay more. But their rent will also increase. Net negative for them.
Chronic51··on Automatic Image Colorization with Simultaneous Classification
They're not required to release code and a dataset. If you can get away with doing less why not? Everyone in every discipline does this. Finance, home improvement, retail, consulting...
Chronic51··on DeepMind moves to TensorFlow
> Do the multi-dimensional matrices that exchange data between the nodes transform like tensors?

Yes, if you design the moeel/graph that way.

> If so, when does the need arise to transform them?

The need arises whenever tensors are needed. For deep learning, most people treat them like multidimensional arrays. TensorFlow is an excellent name.

Multidimensional arrays are a thing of the past. Now we call them tensors. Get with the program or become an aging, forgotten physicist not involved in deep learning.

Chronic51··on Teen birth rate hits all-time low, led by 50% decline among Hispanics and blacks
Most teens do not have a credit card or access to their parents' on Amazon.
Chronic51··on Seattle vigilante reuniting stolen bikes with their owners
He's a good person. Me and a million others would have pressed charges. Are we bad people?
Chronic51··on CERN has released 300 terabytes of research data from LHC
Many companies and universities are connected to the internet backbone with 40 Gbps. No luck needed.
Chronic51··on U.S. Suicide Rate Surges to a 30-Year High
> It's hard to fit in with rich whites / asians who have a boat from their parents and wear designer clothes when you spent your whole childhood playing with cards and worrying about money

As a rich white/Asian, I agree. Now what? We will all go back to coding in atom/vim/etc and continue our lives, forgetting we ever had this whole conversation.

Chronic51··on Is the World Ready for a Guaranteed Basic Income?
Why would I, a rich person, pay 10% of my income in the US when I can simply claim citizenship of another (business focused) country?
Chronic51··on Facebook Messenger Platform
Hell, I'm a "tech" person and I barely even know what blockchains are. Many other engineers are in the same boat as me.
Chronic51··on Medium and Twitter founder: ‘We put junk food in front of them and they eat it’
Who is "we" in "we'll replace these services"? Because it sure won't be me or my organization. Just like everyone who reads this comment, we will hope someone else will do it.
Chronic51··on Engineering PhD student who died last year will get rare posthumous degree
As a counter point, my experience has been that once the thesis proposal is complete, the PhD graduation is practically guaranteed.
Chronic51··on Climate-Related Death of Coral Around World Alarms Scientists
I, and millions of others, say: "we are screwed, my contribution will not change anything"
Chronic51··on Tesla may need cash to deliver on the Model 3: Analysts
People keep clicking the links
Chronic51··on Researcher links mass extinctions to 'Planet X'
That's fine. We still have a thousand years or two. We should be off this planet by then.
Chronic51··on Where's my petabyte disk drive?
The rest of the world doesn't matter. If there is sufficient demand for 4K video and faster connection speeds, there will eventually be a product for them.
Chronic51··on In Facebook’s Hometown, the First Responders Aren’t Local
As someone who owns a house in PA/Menlo, no. I will lobby, make calls, and write checks to government to make sure it doesn't happen. Is it fair? No. Ethical? No. Doesn't matter to me.
Chronic51··on Andy Grove’s Warning to Silicon Valley
The demand for AI and ML is increasing faster than the number of qualified graduates and workers. This is not true for semiconductors.
Chronic51··on TensorFlow Implementation of Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks
This is exactly what is wrong with ametur machine learning today. People think they can open source some data and expect a deep learning expert to come give them a model for free. Protip: the solutions coming from Kaggle are over engineered solutions with massive amounts of hand/human labeling.
Chronic51··on How Tesla's Model 3 Could Conquer Low-End Luxury
There are way too many Tesla (and Elon Musk) fanboys in this thread and on HN.
