ChrisRR··on GDB 18.1 Released
For every greybeard that knows all the tools like the back of their hand, there's someone new joining the industry who doesn't know what gdb is

2000 was better, win xp just looked nicer (for the time)

I have the same issue, and it's complete pot luck which of the printer drivers will work on a given day
ChrisRR··on Windows 11½
As much as I love how fast and efficient it is to update every single package on my linux machines, I can count in double figures the number of times there's been a package conflict and I've had to google how to fix it.

For better or worse that doesn't happen in windows update

ChrisRR··on Windows 11½
The average user doesn't notice activation because most PCs come with windows preinstalled

Maybe I'm missing something, because despite the start menu being an absolute mess, I've not experienced it being slow
ChrisRR··on Calling the AI bluff: Adding "Do not guess" cut made-up claims from 71% to 20%
Well when you have a black box such as claude, the best you can do is ask it for its own interpretation. Anything else would just be a guess
ChrisRR··on Israel Keeps Expanding into Gaza Despite Cease-Fire, Satellite Images Show
Well it'll probably get locked because it's not really hacker news content

Remember the rule of thumb. "If it's covered on TV news, then it's probably off-topic"

ChrisRR··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Damn I haven't seen a Bill Gates conspiracy theory in a long time. What a throwback
ChrisRR··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
I'm assuming it already falls under rules 2 and 5, content manipulation and deceptive interactions
ChrisRR··on Reading’s Bayeux Tapestry
Jesus, you're not wrong. Click any random month from the last 20 years and there's a post from practically every day
ChrisRR··on Maybe don't let Muse run your Facebook Marketplace account
AI has seen how much humans lap up content that is #relatable and started acting like that
ChrisRR··on Calling the AI bluff: Adding "Do not guess" cut made-up claims from 71% to 20%
You may have better success by using a less ambiguous term. I've never heard of grounding in this context, so it may help to describe what you want more clearly

Edit: I just asked Claude how it would interpret that and it said it could either mean that would not answer from memory alone and only anchor claims into things it can check, or it would tightly relate its responses to the context that I had supplied.

If it chose the latter, I could see why it wouldn't always resort to search results

ChrisRR··on Meta VR Glasses
Unfortunately a couple of small start ups isn't enough to carry the industry. Even big players like Valve who have more money in the bank to take a hit couldn't bring their headset in below $1000
ChrisRR··on Meta VR Glasses
I think VR would be completely dead by now if Meta weren't continuing to lose billions every quarter on it. Not many companies can endless sink that much money into a product

Trolley tokens for me. I just keep a couple of quid in my car for supermarkets that need a coin for the trolley

ChrisRR··on Nearly half of young people trust AI over a human for fact-checking, report says

ChrisRR··on Apple Music to open concert venue in Battersea Power Station
Only 600 capacity? This wouldn't even make the news if it hadn't been apple
ChrisRR··on The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
Because it would be incredibly expensive for such small production runs (not to mention the cost of shipping)
ChrisRR··on The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
As a retro gamer I think the people worrying about pixel blurring is overblown. I think a lot fewer artists actually intentionally used it than these articles make out

There's a reason it always comes back to the same few examples, peach hanging from a rope, dracula's eyes, sonic behind the waterfall. If it were used as widely as some people make out then we wouldn't have to keep resorting to the same 3 examples.

That and CRTs stopped being so blurry over the years anyway (especially PC CRTs), so by the time you reached the 16 bit era you couldn't rely on a blurry TV to create your effect
