Chilinot··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
This is why i have setup one of my linux servers to automatically download all photos and videos from my shared google photo albums each night.

This allows me and my wife to easily share photos of our daughter with each other, as well as have a backup of everything we have locally on my NAS.

Next step is to sync this of to several other storage places in case of cryptolocker or the NAS dies.

Chilinot··on FreeBSD Can Now Be Built From Linux/macOS Hosts, Transition To Git Continues
This is a genuine issue. Dont understand the downvoters. I completely agree.
Chilinot··on Do we really travel through time with the speed of light?
Yes, that was a typo on my part.
Chilinot··on Do we really travel through time with the speed of light?
The speed of light is just the speed of any particle without matter. We just use "speed of light" since its simpler to understand and talk about rather than saying "speed of matter-less particles".

The speed of sound is the speed of air-molecules bouncing into each other (~300m/s). Since air-molecules have matter, they dont travel at the speed of light.

Chilinot··on US home construction surges 22.6%, third monthly increase
Same in my country. There has been a surge of people at the hardware stores buying supplies to repair/improve their homes as a way to pass the time when you no longer can travel.

I guess they put their travel money into home improvements.

Chilinot··on Citibank's $900M Blunder
Well if you hadnt payed it back, then the house wouldnt have been payed. And the purchase would be invalid. Also your bank would probably have taken legal action against you.
Chilinot··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
The question is, what do you do when you reach a plateau? Do you invest more time and money? Maybe the skill level suits you well and you don't feel a need to progress further? Maybe deeper understanding is not necessary to do your job well? Maybe it's better to acquire different skills which you can combine instead of being an expert in one area alone?

Is an appropriate response to not getting out of touch.

I hope he sold at june 8. He would have made some serious bank. But even if he sells today he will turn a profit
Chilinot··on George Floyd died of asphyxia, private autopsy finds
There are several comments here that explains the difference. Summarized, previous autopsy blamed pre-existing heart condition for the death. While this new independent autopsy determined it to be asphyxiation.
Chilinot··on George Floyd died of asphyxia, private autopsy finds
It is just staggering to believe that they tried to hide the real cause of death amidst all this protesting. Like they genuinely thought they could get away with just sweeping it under the rug.
Chilinot··on George Floyd died of asphyxia, private autopsy finds
A previous autopsy said it was his heart that failed.
Chilinot··on A note of reflection after 10 years of “A successful Git branching model”
I fully agree. Removing the master branch which is just fluff that noone uses you essentially come to trunkbased development.
Chilinot··on Instagram is deleting the accounts of hundreds of porn stars
Sure, developing and publishing an app or a library to be used by other developers is the easy part. What is difficult and expensive is setting up the infrastructure for hosting all of the content generated, and api-servers for handling requests. That is the barrier that stops others from implementing something Instagram-esque.

Not really, which is why integration tests are so important.

Chilinot··on Endlessh: An SSH Tarpit
It's as safe as it can get. None of the versions he showed in the post actually read any data from the attacker. It only accepts the connection, then writes random data to it every 10 seconds forever.
Chilinot··on Ten people arrested in Gujarat for allegedly playing banned game PUBG
Considering the amount of people (myself included) that have grown up playing video games and shooters. I think we have enough empirical evidence that violent video games do not in fact raise violent people.

Im only looking at the crime rates in the US using wikipedia [1], and the crimes are going down. Im certain that this trend is similar in other developed countries that have a long history of violent movies and video games.

Chilinot··on PrivateStorage.io: A secure and privacy-focused cloud storage solution
Im using Syncthing as well, and in my Syncthing dir on my laptop there is currently 52 GB of data.

That includes a synchting-share for my automatic backups and my "dropbox" replacement (a simple directory for syncing between phone, and computers).

It works great. I haven't had any issues with it. The current release of syncthing is very stable. Earlier versios were a bit error prone. But they seem to have fleshed out most, if not all bugs i encountered in earlier versions.

Chilinot··on 2.7M medical calls breached in Sweden
The "funny" thing is, it wasnt using HTTPS, it was on the 443 port. But the data was sent unencrypted.

No, it is not like that at all. Wifi/cellular radio do not generate even close to the power required to affect you in any way. [1]

Chilinot··on Police Use Fitbit Data to Charge 90-Year-Old Man in Stepdaughter’s Killing
It's that people will more generally trust the logs of the smart device to be correct, than whom the owner of the knife is.

It's more about people putting more trust into smart devices than they should; and the fear this gives me for the future.

Chilinot··on Police Use Fitbit Data to Charge 90-Year-Old Man in Stepdaughter’s Killing
While I can certainly see its benefits in cases like this. It also worries me that falsely accusing someone of murder becomes ever so easier when courts start to trust these devices more and more in the future.

For example, a murdurer wanting to stick the charges on some other person could steal that persons devices (phone, fitbit, etc). Wear them while commiting the murder. Then return them, without notice if done at night or something.

The other person would then have a very hard time proving that he/she did not in fact commit to the murder, simply because courts have started to rely on these devices too much.

Chilinot··on Ending support for Dropbox syncing to drives with certain uncommon file systems
I would recommend Syncthing. Fully open source. It is however self-hosted. But they have clients for basically everything, including mobile phones.
Chilinot··on HTTP 418 I'm a Teapot
I think it's also important to take note that the 418 status code may be "short and stout".
Chilinot··on Instapaper is going independent
I would certainly recommend reading up on the GDPR legislation. There are plenty of summaries that are good and covers the important aspects. Because once you understand GDPR, complience can follow naturally while you develop your application. Even if you dont serve customers in EU, GDPR complience will benefit non EU residents as well, since you have then implemented tooling for proper management of private information.

And if your application doesn't store data, then it's a one time cost essentially. Which is the time spent reading up on the legislation.

Chilinot··on Instapaper is going independent
If your product can't follow the GDPR legislation then I'm glad you don't allow EU residents to use it. Since you are most likely abusing the privacy of your customers.

While I'm a bit annoyed at the amount of paperwork and side systems that need to be constructed to ensure proper handling of personal data that I have had to implement, I can only see GDPR as something positive for the people.
