I like to buy high end and then keep it for a long time. I'd love local AI But even with a fairly large spend, these machines won't run that much local AI well and that's now, I'm not sure if in the future I'd want even more RAM, seems to be it is better to budget for an AI sub + a less insane machine.
I burn through my current Google AI pro sub for the week in about 2 and a half days so wanted something extra to add to it, but don’t want to buy any expensive ultra plan. Flash models have got me about 98% of what I need, but quotas are still a bit low.
I hate how difficult it is to compare prices when looking at subscriptions.
Would $20 in open router, using models like GLM get me more or less?
Ugh. I was waiting it out on a very old Mac, but the pricing these days is insane, so now to wait it out for at least two years more and hope for better pricing or just suck it up and pay a lot for less.
Meta Spark has been added as a free model, I guess as a replacement, since this is now the cheap model at reasonable intelligence.
It's available with Go (subscription) and they are working on making it cheaper after the recent price increase, that may see them add it back to free.
This realisation that you have come too, will likely lead to a better place, much like all struggles.
I pasted the same prompt into OpenCode, set to Deepseek v4 flash free and did it first try.
I'm was going to purchase Opencode GO to try it, but seems my timing is really bad :( hope it doesn't go up too much in Opencode or they find other providers. Bad timing!
Seems I can on one device today and not on the other. Seems they might be testing/starting that too.
Sometimes better to work with people when things go wrong via good intentions rather than turn around and sue them and break relationships completely.
Do with that information what you will, but it might be that you are looking at passion wrongly, expecting to 'find' something you are magically passionate about.
Beyond that, take care of your health, rest and play around with things to increase your surface area of finding something that works.
Reasoning came through evolution when we learned to communicate and needed to give reasons for things, not because we needed to figure out how to do things.
Caveman you, steals Caveman Dave's berries. You need to give Caveman Dave a good reason for why you did this, else you get bonk on head.
This explains a lot. The brain decides what it wants AND only then, does it decide the reasons why it wants it. It's a justification and excuse making machine.
Which is why people will argue and twist any fact or truth to match what they believe, they don't come up with what they believe through logic, they use logic to try and come up with a reason for what they believe.
When you really stop to think about that, it changes everything and explains a lot.
(This is outlined in the book The Enigma of Reason: A New Theory of Human Understanding)
I went to a music festival last weekend, ticket has to be on the ticketmaster app which is android or iOS, the official app for the festival has timings and updates for the event which are very important else you will miss stuff that is announced, even safety warnings.
My train tickets were on the app, I needed it to book the Uber as well.
20% off drinks and food if you use the paypal app. You just can't do things without Android or iOS.
Thousands of people parked in random fields, parked in daylight, need to find car at night = Airtag/ map.
Everything is an app these days. It's a lot harder to do everything without such things. You wouldn't have been able to attend without such a device.
I hope they increase the quota and this is just a capacity issue.
But they basically killed it on the pro plan. Very disappointed and upset today, I've burnt through my weekly allowance on a handful of prompts trying to fix a bug that it's made worse. Now I can't use it for 6 days.
Most concert tickets are not standing and you used to get paper tickets you could just hand to someone else, why should you not be allowed to do this just because it moved to digital?
Even the $20 subscription is ridiculously limited and they keep adding more and more limits. The $200 a month sub is insane and only going to get worse and yet still limited
This is because, the 'reasoning' part of our brain came from evolution when we started to communicate with others, we needed to explain our behaviour.
Which is fascinating if you think of the implications of that. In the most part we think we are being logical, but in reality we are pattern matching/impulsive and using our reasoning/logic to come up for excuses for why we have chosen what we had already decided.
It explains a lot about the world and why it's so hard to reason with someone, we are assuming the decision came from reason in the first place, which when you look at such peoples choices, makes sense as it's clear it didn't.
I am 43. I used to code as a kid and I've dabbled in it here and there, but I quickly realised I didn't want to code as a career, but now with these new tools I am building again and it's great, because I'm building the things that work for me.
To manage my life there was a todo app I used, now I've built my own, don't need to pay for it and it works exactly as I want it and now I also have a few ideas for other things I Want to do.
It's great, it feels like we might be able to start taking control of our tech back again now, when we can build the tools ourselves that work the way we want, we don't have to worry about the nonsense companies are sticking into there products, we can make things work exactly as we want it.
What if you weren't connected to this? what if you didn't know? Ukraine/Iran/whereever, sucks for those people but if your always connected to everything, there is always something bad going on in the world, so you will always see it and it's too much to bare. Some people argue this is just sticking your head in the sand, but what is it that you can personally do? if you want to take up some form of activism in this area, go ahead, but if you aren't, then it should be ignored.
You only have a certain amount of **s to give, choose widely.
And focus on what is local to you, In the scale of the universe who cares about you? in the scale of the planet who cares about you? In the scale of your country who cares about you? in the scale of your city? Your street even, who cares about you? But on the scale of the people you know and interact with, your family, coworkers etc, who cares about the universe?
The problem is you are connecting yourself to the universes enitre problems and then struging to stay sane. No wonder.
I have a iMac 5k that I want to replace with a Mac mini or Studio, but monitors for Mac's are difficult since you need 5k at 27" or even 6k at 32" to keep th pixel density and then they aren't many options.
It's getting better, but prices are very high and a big issue with the 5k 27" monitors is that they are stuck at 60hz, Apple announced an approved offering here, but it's very expensive for the XDR and ideally I'd like to upgrade to 6k at 32" and have 120hz but that just seems unobtainable at the moment.
I'm more concerned this is actually a coverup for a bribe, considering Brockman just dominated $25 million.
I haven't published it publicly yet, as i use it personally and it's a little flakey still, but will look to do in the future once I finish adding all the features.
My version is much more feature rich than TeuxDeux and I made it for Free in Google AI studio over the past two months, between other things. I'd just type a prompt and then go do some other stuff, it has taken quite a lot of revision but I haven't written a single line of code and i've been using it daily to manage my tasks since the start of December.
