Carrok··on Moist-Electric Wallpaper for Indoor Energy Harvesting and Humidity Management
Bad by what metric?
Carrok··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
We should absolutely stop using water to grow alfalfa in the desert that we then ship to foreign countries so they can feed it to their cattle.
Carrok··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
This phrase has been around for years, I know because it has always infuriated me.

They took a well-defined unit of time, which is relatively short, and made it mean “some unknown but very long period of time”.

So frustrating. /oldmanyellsatcloud

More than 300,000 years.
Carrok··on Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
> When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.
Carrok··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Why would you even update? HDMI cables aren't really changing. No internet, ever.
Carrok··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
You don't have to go back years, months will do.

There are more than you listed as well, like the raspberries https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/outbrea...

Carrok··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
This comment confuses me a bit because Google Maps (at least in the US, in my experience) is really great about telling you what lane to be in.
Carrok··on typ.ing
I haven’t had printed symbols on any keyboard, split or not, in many years.
Carrok··on Hister – A private, full content search index that you control
I’m not concerned about an attack scenario. I’m just saying that using the docker image, if someone (or their agent) isn’t careful, they could expose their browsing history publicly fairly easily. It might just be nice to default to at least a user and pass login rather than just wide open.
Carrok··on Hister – A private, full content search index that you control
It seemed like the public mode was the default when I set it up. If so, that’s a fairly dangerous default as keeping a “clean” history with no secrets leaked seems neigh impossible.
Carrok··on Hister – A private, full content search index that you control
I tried this out this week and liked it but really wish this project had some form of auth. Opening the contents of every page you’ve ever visited, even to the local network, is not the best idea.
Carrok··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Everything in moderation, especially moderation.
Carrok··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Sounds like a pretty strong argument to self host, and otherwise be in charge of the software you use.
Carrok··on Show HN: Git-knife – Edit commit messages, authors, and dates like a spreadsheet
So, exactly like a knife? Generally we don't want to cut people open, but when we need to do it, like during surgery, a sharp knife sure helps.
Carrok··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
What reputation?
Carrok··on Why Do Fewer Renters Expect to Move?
Along the same lines, you are buying a place. A place that you own and can do whatever you like with. I spent twenty years renting and twenty years of feeling like you can’t hang a picture on the wall, paint a room, upgrade an appliance, or really do anything to improve your surroundings, tends to get tiring.
Carrok··on 200 Milliseconds
I still like this question because of exactly what you mentioned. What the interviewee does and does not mention can give you a fair bit of insight into their priors.
Carrok··on Nyctography: A substituton cypher by Lewis Carroll
I learned very similar runes for the Ultima games.
Carrok··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
A standard home brewing batch is 5 gallons. Or 40 pints.

While it is a crazy world and I don’t want to say no one has ever done what you described, it would be an outlier to say the least.

Home brewed beer is generally bottled or put into a keg and tapped.

(Almost) no one is just drinking warm uncarbonated beer from the fermenter.

Carrok··on The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder
Bit of an aside but I found it somewhat amusing that one example the author uses of Jim’s financial recklessness was getting into home brewing.

Home brewing is one of the cheaper hobbies available (though like all hobbies you can spend as much as you want). The only real requirements are a bucket and a pot.

Carrok··on Europe's fires are just the start
Portugal is 35k square miles. The Rockies are 300k square miles, much of it, notably, is mountainous.

I do not think “cleaning” it is going to work, so I’m curious what this “not much different” plan looks like.

Carrok··on Europe's fires are just the start
> All this work must be done in the winter and everything must be prepared for the summer. Every year. Everywhere.

Good luck doing any work in the winter in places like, oh say, the Rocky Mountains.

Carrok··on JetZero
Just bring a sleep mask.
Carrok··on We charge $10k a week to delete AI-generated code
> bugs are not so scary anymore

Umm, what?

Bugs can cause user data loss in production, or total system outages, or a slew of other Really Bad Things. How are you planning to vibecode your way out of that after the fact?

Carrok··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
You have fallen victim to what is known as “marketing”.
Carrok··on Elevated error rate across multiple models
If you care about privacy at all, you can route your Opencode requests through an inference provider that does not retain any logs or data. It is also much cheaper. So if your boxes include `Privacy` and `Affordability`, then no, they don't tick the same boxes.
Carrok··on My Homelab AI Dev Platform
It can connect to any model hosted anywhere.
Carrok··on Show HN: Vet turned founder, AI lawn diagnosis
I agree, broadly, with your statement. I am removing my entire front yard to xeriscape. I compost and am otherwise environmentally active and conscious.

That said, plenty of people _do_ actually use their lawns, especially those of us with children. My actual grass lawn is surrounded by native and low water use plants, but my small patch of green (around 2k sqft), will stay green until my kids move out.

I think it's much more useful to target the endless industrial and commercial parks that have far more grass than a normal size neighborhood. Let people have some joy in their lives.

Carrok··on The new bibliomaniacs
Maybe the cartridges could even contain the actual music. On an engraving that stores the audio information perhaps. This engraving could be played back and reproduce the audio. It probably would never work though.
