CapnCrunchie··on Show HN: Polytomic Connect – API for two-way ETL and data syncs with customers
We started using Polytomic for only reverse ETL, but are now working to move our ETL processes to it as well.

They've been really great to work with and they've been able to handle our data as we've scaled at Vercel.

Congrats on the launch!

CapnCrunchie··on Mario meets Pareto
They have the highest top speed. It was that way in Mario Kart 64 as well. They have the worst acceleration though.
CapnCrunchie··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
I actually just took Nick up on the offer to call or text, and we just got off the phone. We chatted about how we can find people to meet even though we just moved to a new city.

Definitely going to try hosting our own party.

CapnCrunchie··on Working with Tailwind CSS every day for 2 years
My understanding of CSS has gotten a lot better from using Tailwind.
CapnCrunchie··on Lambda School (YC S17) + Amazon to Launch 9-Month Back End Engineering Program
I think this is a pretty incredible move. I went through Lambda's full-stack program part-time, but I would definitely say it leans more front-end heavy. This will be great for those that really want to focus on the back-end development.

(full disclosure, I was employed at Lambda while going through the part-time program)

CapnCrunchie··on Zapier reached a $5B valuation with $1.3M of funding
There are competitors.

https://n8n.io/ is the open source version https://tray.io/ is more of an enterprise version, and better for people that are more technical https://www.integromat.com/ is considered the cheaper alternative

CapnCrunchie··on Zapier reached a $5B valuation with $1.3M of funding
There are people who do that, such as https://www.luhhu.com/
CapnCrunchie··on Luna – Cloud gaming service
Using Stadia with my Chromecast wired to ethernet has been pretty incredible. Very rarely have I felt like I had a degraded gaming experience.
CapnCrunchie··on Lambda School wants to teach nursing
Who's to say that the nursing side of Lambda won't be accredited?
CapnCrunchie··on Now for Gitlab
I was a little confused on how this differed from GitLab CI. The CEO of Zeit gave me a response:

https://twitter.com/rauchg/status/1108035208903684096

"GitLab + Now gives you a multi-cloud, multi-language/framework serverless solution with built-in CI/CD, TLS (Let's Encrypt), DNS with zero maintenance or configuration.

Most CI solutions involve painful config, fine-tuning & dedicated folks keeping it up to date."

CapnCrunchie··on Lambda School (YC S17) now pays eligible students $2k/month
Unfortunately you can't deduct the payments. There is some potential legislation around that, but it hasn't been pushed through yet.
CapnCrunchie··on No Tuition, but You Pay a Percentage of Your Income if You Find a Job
At Lambda School, the ISA does expire after 5 years of not meeting the income threshold.
CapnCrunchie··on SAP to acquire Qualtrics
They sell to enterprises. They have customers like BMW, Southwest, etc. They get MBAs to learn to use them in school, then when they have to use a product when they get a job at a fortune 500, they go with Qualtrics since they know how to use it. That's how they got a lot of market penetration.
CapnCrunchie··on Lambda School Announces $14M Series A Led by GV
There are forms you can fill out with the IRS to give access to your tax returns to other individuals.
CapnCrunchie··on GitLab raises $100M from Iconiq, GV, and Khosla, at $1.1B valuation
I previously worked at GitLab, and I can confirm this is the point that I find most commenters on HN miss. GitLab's web platform, at the moment, is essentially a marketing expense to get people to use GitLab and push it into their day jobs.
CapnCrunchie··on Email marketing for e-commerce
I've had nothing but bad experiences with TaskEasy personally, so I'm not surprised that unsubscribing from their emails was such a poor experience.
CapnCrunchie··on Don’t Tax Options and RSUs Upon Vesting
I worked for a company where RSUs did not vest until liquidity event. There were a lot of earned options that people still haven't been able to exercise. People that have been there for over 8 years. I just forfeited mine and moved on to a different company.
CapnCrunchie··on Albertsons snaps up meal kit startup Plated
>Grocery stores can market these meal kits as more affordable, healthier, and 'hip'.

I did a meal kit service for a little while, and my biggest complaint was that it was not any cheaper than if I were to go out to eat, but I still had to cook the meal and clean up afterwards. If there were a cost savings versus going to eat at a restaurant, I would have kept the subscription.

CapnCrunchie··on Cybersecurity Incident Involving Consumer Information
No it won't prevent you from accessing your free credit scores.
CapnCrunchie··on How Grammarly Grew to 6.9M Daily Users in 9 Years
It's interesting that they started off selling to universities. This is the same strategy that Qualtrics used, where they started with Universities then moved into enterprise:

CapnCrunchie··on Vue.js and Brunch: Webpack Alternative
This was the followup post our front-end lead wrote:

https://about.gitlab.com/2017/02/06/vue-big-plan/

I don't think it's exactly what you were asking for, but I'll pass this suggestion along to our front-end lead that wrote these two posts.

CapnCrunchie··on Vue.js and Brunch: Webpack Alternative
We use Vue at GitLab. You can see why we chose Vue as written by our front-end lead.

CapnCrunchie··on Show HN: Upstart.me – Find newsletters to promote your startup or side projects

CapnCrunchie··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
Working remotely has been a great experience for me. My wife and I started traveling around the US since I am fully remote and her company offered to let her work remote for a while so we could do this.

We either work out of the Airbnb we rent or a cafe. In some cities we were close to a reasonably priced co-working space and would work out of there.

The big draw for me has been the flexibility. We try as hard as possible to do asynchronous work, so some days I will take a few hour break in the middle of the day and go do something, and then work later into the evening.

CapnCrunchie··on GitHub was down
I'm pretty sure most, if not all, government agencies require on-premises hosting of code
CapnCrunchie··on Pinterest Raises $150M at 2015 Share Price
This is exactly what happened with the platforms you mentioned. Affiliates and other direct response advertisers are willing to take a chance on a new ad platform because the costs are generally low, and the returns can be really good.

Then, once the big brands come to play, the platforms change what ads are deemed acceptable and start kicking off those that started out using the platform.

You nailed it.

CapnCrunchie··on GitLab 8.15 Released
Hey, I do marketing at GitLab, and this is definitely not something that should be happening. If you want to email me at mitchell [at] gitlab [.] com with the email that you signed up to our service with I'd love to look into why you were sent so many emails.
CapnCrunchie··on Ask HN: Ever been hired through a “who's hiring” post?
At GitLab, we have this line at the bottom of our job postings:

Avoid the confidence gap; you do not have to match all the listed requirements exactly to apply.
We believe that while it would be nice to have someone that exactly checks all the boxes, we are willing to look at candidates that might not feel they are all the way there.
