Cantbekhan··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
Can't you just still do a screenshot/screen recording and use OTR on it? Or just use a keylogger for logging what you typed (and just use keylogger to retype it)?
Cantbekhan··on Australia to make Facebook, Google pay for news
Off topic but I had the same issue. Did you change your Google payment profile? (which has nothing to do with all the profile addresses you can set in various places)

https://support.google.com/paymentscenter/answer/9028746?hl=...

Because you can't actually change your country on your Google payment profile. You need to create a new one and then switch the new one.

I had to do this to switch my US account to an EU account with the EU GDPR user consent options. Your Google account is tied to the payment profile country AFAIK.

It's worth mentioning that there were many similar and even larger (and also much deeper) underwater labs and habitats since the 1960s.

Cantbekhan··on Montreal is taxing churches (2017)
Slightly off topic but I think it would be interesting to observe the German example as I think it's a good "fair" system.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_tax#Germany

" The church tax is only paid by members of the respective church. People who are not members of a church tax-collecting denomination do not have to pay it. Members of a religious community under public law may formally declare their wish to leave the community to state (not religious) authorities. The obligation to pay church taxes ends once such a declaration has been made. Some communities refuse to administer marriages and burials of (former) members who had declared to leave it. "

In many European countries, everyone (community member or not, believer or firm atheist) has to pay full taxes to pay for the churches/synagogues and mosques. Including the salary of priests. This in addition of them also not being taxed due to their special status.

Despite not living in a theocracy, many are forced to participate directly in a cult that might be of zero interest to them.

Cantbekhan··on Tiny Tiny RSS
But at least it's maintained consistently and has been maintained for the past 14 years now.

I've been using it since the end of google reader and it works great. The filtering aspect alone is wonderful for me to filter out some tags/authors.

The (paid official ) Android app is pretty good too and supports offline reading (for a very small fee).

I self host it on a public facing server. Great to sync my reading between all my devices. I do recommend adding some basic auth in front of the (obviously https) login page as the client apps (android) supports it and it adds a layer of security.

There are certainly plenty of black markets thriving on onion services. Some have been online and serving for quite a few years. They seem fine.

Cantbekhan··on Coronavirus: Russian hackers target Covid-19 vaccine research
To me this whole report basically translates to "Someone did a nmap/nessus scan of some IPs and some people received phishing e-mails". And I really hope we won't ever have an actual real war over some Citrix admins not updating their internet facing systems and some employees clicking some spam e-mail...

Cantbekhan··on The Future of Online Identity Is Decentralized
I believe that in this day and age we probably all need at least two identities: the birth/official transparent, trusted one for official/professional use and an anonymous one for unofficial/online things.

But this is because I think nobody should be fired, de-platformed, banned or "canceled" for opinions/thoughts outside of those contexts.

Sure you could be fired from your work if you started shouting your opinions on your workplace. No you shouldn't be fired from your work for anything that happened outside that work.

Anonymity is needed for the sake of free thinking as a shield to any current/future mob that could ruin your life/career for just any reason at all.

In 10 Years you might find yourself ostracized because someone found some 20yo old snippet of code you wrote with "banned words" in them.

I used to think it was an acquired thing that you could have free opinions with your official identity (political or anything) and not risk your livelihood for opinions but the thought enforcing mobs are now everywhere and most companies will bend the knee to their bidding.

And obviously this identity needs to be decentralized to also protect that identity itself from being ruined by the various de-platforming attempts.

These days, I'm genuinely more concerned about the current mob rule mentality than government oppression.

Cantbekhan··on EU Court of Human Rights Declares Order to Remove Anti-Censorship Tool Illegal
This might be a ruling against Russia but it's significant since this is an ECHR level ruling and it could really become de facto case law for all other ECHR members (including Turkey/Russia but also the whole EU and the UK still).
Cantbekhan··on Vitamin D looks powerful, underutilized for Covid-19
It should be noted that while he does have some qualifications due to being a nurse and a nursing teacher, he's a Doctor in Philosophy and not in any medical/science field. It doesn't dismiss his claims per se but I still think he's using his Doctor title in a somewhat misleading way in this Covid19 context where a lot of people seem to think he's actually a medical doctor which he's not (edit: and this can be easily verified by just skimming through most comments on his videos which praises him in that regard).

There have been already many reactions to these new claims. Very quick to dismiss him again for the lack of any control group despite him comparing to other hospitals who do not treat with HCQ...

Cantbekhan··on Covid-19 Report on ICU Outcome of 2561 patients in the UK
Very TLDR: If you're unlucky enough to get into ICU because of Covid-19, your average survival odds (life/death) are about 76/24 for 16-49yo , 54/46 for 50-69yo , 32/68 for 70+yo. Odds get worse if you're male and obese with comorbidities. And odds get terribly worse if you get to the invasive respiratory support stage (intubation/ECMO).

It's not open registration tho ... I tried and it needs "admin confirmation" and I'm not sure the data is in English which would make this rather "complicated" for a non-Korean.

I'm also not sure they'll give out all patient detailed history but we'll see...

Cantbekhan··on Study: Severe Covid-19 Cases Don't Respond to Hydroxychloroquine+Azithromycin
Yes ... And it seems this issue is a global one. We seem to have the ability to put half the world in lockdowns but we don't have ability to crosscheck a bunch of different patient databases that could already contain the answer to this whole HCQ debate.
Cantbekhan··on Study: Severe Covid-19 Cases Don't Respond to Hydroxychloroquine+Azithromycin
Because they didn't intend to use chloroquine as a way to reduce the immune response to cytokine storms.

They intended to use it to prevent virus replication in the cells at the early stages of the immune response to allow the immune system to build up a response at a slower pace.

The amount of treatment proposed in Europe is around 5 days of HCQ with about 800mg on D1 and then 400mg on D2-5. This is an incredibly low dosage and will have very little immunosuppressant effect. It takes a very long time to act as an efficient immunosuppressant (1 to 3 months for Lupus).

Expecting HCQ to suppress the immune system for cytokine storms in a matter of hours seems very strange.

As that controversial French doctor said in multiple interviews. If you are already in need of a respirator then your issue is no longer the virus but your own immune system killing you (cytokine storm or added bacterial pneumonia). At that stage, HCQ is not very useful. Not in these dosages at least.

Most people are only focusing on the immunosuppressing effect of HCQ for some reason which is very strange to me.

It takes time for chloroquine to act as a zinc ionophore as well and for zinc to enter the cells (and it needs to be in the cells to inhibit RNA polymerase). As you can see in the studies I posted. Between 24 and 72 hours it seems.

If the virus cannot replicate correctly (with the zinc idea), it might give more time to "flatten the curve" for the immune system. To build up antibodies and respond to the disease without inducing a cytokine storm.

This at least is their hypothesis. And it has not been confirmed in any other way than by observing that those with chronic Lupus+HCQ treatment seemed to be "immune" to the disease. And this was only done in Wuhan as far as I know.

Unfortunately Dr Zhan Zhang has not yet published his full results except for this preliminary https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.22.20040758v...

Which doesn't go into much detail about anything except that "it seems to work". Unfortunately ... Yet I do see logic in the idea.

I just wish people (with access to patient files in major hospital centers) would also look into this and they could maybe confirm this "once and for all" without even needing a full blown trial.

Cantbekhan··on Study: Severe Covid-19 Cases Don't Respond to Hydroxychloroquine+Azithromycin
Nobody seems to be talking about the actual reason Chinese doctors found chloroquine (and HCQ) interesting and it has nothing to do with it's immunosuppressing effect:

1) Chloroquine (and HCQ) is a zinc ionophore: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4182877/

2) Zinc seems to inhibit RNA polymerase of Coronaviruses in vitro https://www.researchgate.net/publication/47794995_Zn_Inhibit...

Their conclusion was that chloroquine could indeed allow zinc to enter the cell and then inhibit replication (and therefore that the treatment needed to be administered early).

Nobody seems to be talking about a very easy way to verify chloroquine (and HCQ) efficiency by just using the same method used in China:

Cross-check the list of patients infected with Lupus (lupus erythematosus) and with chronic HCQ treatment (they take it for years) with the list of known infected COVID19 patients.

In China (and specifically in Wuhan), this is how they (team of Dr Zhang Zhan) found out about the efficiency of HCQ. They noticed that there were no patients with chronic HCQ treatment for lupus (lupus erythematosus) infected with covid19. This was in peoples Hospital of Wuhan University (source: https://www.jqknews.com/news/388543-The_novel_coronavirus_pn...)

This alone would be enough to prove some efficiency even as prophyalxis (as they are advocating officially in India). This should be quite trivial to check with the current amount of confirmed infection.
