How is it wasted? So much of their revenue comes from search deals, which are floundering in the courts and being displaced in the wild (by LLM-powered search).

Now, people are paying money to use these LLM products. Which is a niche pricing strategy for search engines.

CameronNemo··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
That's a disappointing answer if it is really the case. One has to question why they can't forward port their changes for a handful of years.

The Fairphone is aiming to upstream their new phone's drivers. Chromebooks typically run a much closer to mainline kernel than Android devices.

CameronNemo··on Spotify code suggests HiFi tier is coming with lossless audio for $20 / month
1. You are assuming the goal is to spend as little money on art as possible. Which isn't the case for a lot of us.

2. Not everything is on Spotify. E.g. the song Golden Girl by Frank Ocean. Or most Neil Young songs.

CameronNemo··on Matrix 2.0: The Future of Matrix
Maybe you are confused because the old client name, Riot, was sunset in favor of Element?

AIUI the protocol was and is called Matrix. There seems to be no intention to depart from that name.

NAT64 and DNS64 can help your v6-only hosts cope with the ubiquity of v4-only hosts.
CameronNemo··on LAUSD to purchase 180 electric school buses
Tiny houses in the desert. Jk I dunno but presumably parts or the whole things will end up in Mexico.
CameronNemo··on What if public transit was like Uber? A small city ended bus service to find out
I also find it interesting, because I'd be surprised if many of those people who live in small, southern towns are not low-income. Trying to live beyond one's means is the best way to stay broke.
CameronNemo··on What if public transit was like Uber? A small city ended bus service to find out
So they substituted federal subsidies for VC funding so they could keep the cheap rideshare party going? Instead of fixing their bus routes? Must be nice.

Inertia is a helluva drug.
CameronNemo··on iNaturalist strikes out on its own
You can download it from their github apparently.

I just limp along with aurora, though.

Our infra team decided to deploy v12 in the last year... But only for GitLab. We are still deploying with v9.6 for some other new projects.

If you have a problem with Canada gooses, then you have a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate.

CameronNemo··on Public exposure to BPA exceeds acceptable health safety levels
Honestly I want to say something to the employees at grocery stores... They are more exposed than any of us to PBAs on receipt paper.

Local libraries, print shops... but yeah that may be an attack vector.

CameronNemo··on Starlink at the moment of Cruise Missile/Sea drone attack on Black Sea fleet
Is that what happened last night? Or was Elon just trying to disrupt Ukrainian communications on their own territory while they conducted their recent attack on Crimea?
CameronNemo··on TSMC to invest up to $100M in Arm IPO
Isn't SoftBank planning to retain 90% ownership?
CameronNemo··on Open source code doesn’t mean community managed
Is this supposed to be a thread? Why would someone post one sentence and then just trail off like that? This feels like half of a thought, not particularly notable or important.
CameronNemo··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
This doesn't answer my question... If an admin does not want their users using Edge, is there an actual way to configure the default browser that doesn't end up opening links and such in Edge?
CameronNemo··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
Do you have a source for that? I've always heard it, but... I've also watched a lot of people wash dishes in ways that waste lots of water unnecessarily.

I'd be curious how the study was conducted, and if they have video of the study participants washing their dishes.

CameronNemo··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
Can you actually switch the default browser with group policy? What if your team only has the bandwidth to support a couple browsers, and your users say they want Chrome and Firefox?

[In 2014] The Captain of the Port of Miami ordered Baluchi not to attempt to travel to Bermuda in his bubble. Baluchi tried again in 2016. [...]

And they sank his bubble as a hazard to navigation. "They shot, they sink my bubble," Baluchi told VICE. "No more bubble I have."

CameronNemo··on The fight over California community solar: ‘It’s everyone vs. utilities’
I don't use gas except for the stove, so if they charged me anymore than $10/month for gas I'd tell them to get away from me with their toxic waste. Currently I pay about $5/month there.

I don't pay for water, it is grouped by the building. Which is exactly what I'm suggesting for electricity -- multi unit buildings should have a single connection cost, not one per tenant.

CameronNemo··on Video codecs: Adding AV1 stateless video decoder support to Linux
If you want an SBC, the closest you'll find is the MT8395-based IPi SMARC 1200 (yikes on the price...). AFAICT, the mt8395 is just an mt8195 with an auxiliary AI processor. Device trees published for the IPi device have several references to mt8195.

CameronNemo··on Characterizing gaming workloads on Zen 4
FYI the framework 13 doesn't even have a dGPU, so it would fit it seems. Not available yet, though, AFAIK. I'm certainly waiting for mine (preordered a couple months back).
