Calcite··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
And if they switched their phone’s locale to a non-US country, then the distance would show up with 1-kilometre precision. Nearly 40% more accurate!
Calcite··on Show HN: ChatLLaMA – A ChatGPT style chatbot for Facebook's LLaMA
Meanwhile Europe is having morning tea and APAC evening news catch up...
Calcite··on Amazon AppFlow
This is just Amazon’s first move. They definitely have most of Zapier’s use cases on their roadmap at this point.
Calcite··on Which Emoji Scissors Close?
In the MONA museum in Tasmania, they have real life versions of the “renders”. It was amazing to see the inoperable bicycles in front of me.

Calcite··on Big Data Gives the “Big 5” Personality Traits a Makeover
I like how they’ve compared ML clusters to US cities. Fundamentally, it’s still a continuous distribution between the five variables with four “hot spots”.

>>>Revelle likened the types to the location and population of cities. More people live in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston than anywhere else in the country, but most of the country doesn’t live in any of those cities. And although you can easily lump someone in Newark into New York, a person in Pittsburgh is harder to classify because they are equally close to New York and Chicago.

Calcite··on The Food Lab: The Science of No-Knead Dough (2011)
I've been baking a variant of this recipe for several years now. It's the best bread I've made at home hands down. If you have a dutch oven (even a large cookie tray and upside down stainless steel bowl will do the trick), do try it!
Calcite··on In praise of cash
Likely anti money laundering legislation.
Calcite··on 2017 State of Global Tech Salaries
The average salary is 73k£. 84k£ is adjusted to the cost of living in SF.

Calcite··on Megaprocessor – A micro-processor built large
There's some serious head scratching going on when you watch the video. If you can, wait a day before watching the explanation. I'm not even sure what's going on after watching that!
Calcite··on The world's fastest human-powered vehicle tops 85 mph
I found out they have great Q&A videos on their YouTube channel. They answer here why golf ball dimples are unnecessary for a fin-like shape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXpZy_A7mMk
Calcite··on Octopus genome holds clues to uncanny intelligence
I've seen a few octopus while scuba diving in tropical waters. They are the most interesting species underwater. You can look at them for five minutes and it's absolutely fascinating. The way their skin changes texture and color is mesmerizing. It really feels like an alien life form because nothing else looks or behaves like that.
Calcite··on The Apple Watch
That's incorrect. The seconds hand moves 6 times in one second on my 7S26 movement (21,600 bph). On a modern Rolex, it would move 8 times in one second. You can check this with a high speed camera (such as the one in the iPhone 6). Nonetheless, there are vastly superior mechanical drives out there that are continuous (Seiko Spring Drive for example).
Calcite··on Experience Plastc
The competition between Apple Pay, Facebook payments and Google Wallet will be fierce. Although, I don't see Coin or Plastc wildly succeeding, but they will set the tone for what's to come with mobile payments (flexibility and convenience).
Calcite··on Security Analysis of a Full-Body Scanner
Aren't the machines in use today using the same technology? Instead of showing the full image, they are applying pattern matching and only showing suspect regions to the operators. Supposedly to protect privacy...
Calcite··on Amazon Local Register
I wonder if these kind of initiatives slow the adoption of chip and pin credit cards in the US. If Amazon is willing to lower the fees for swipes, pin entered transactions could be even lower.
Calcite··on Sodaconstructor: Interactive creations using masses and springs (2007)
I can't believe this is still online. We used to do mini competition amongst friends when this was released. There was also a huge repository of designs made by others you could try out.
Calcite··on Math Can Make the Internet 5-10 Times Faster
There is no detail of how this actually works. They are keeping everything secret. Easy to wonder if this is vaporware. "In order for this to work, however, the data is coded and decoded with the patented technology. [...] The company makes the RLNC technology (Random Linear Network Coding) available to hardware manufacturers and they are in secret negotiations that will bring the improvements to consumers."
Calcite··on Massachusetts SWAT teams claim they’re private corporations
Washington Post has a very bad mobile experience. How am I supposed to read this? http://imgur.com/DyePAYJ
Calcite··on If you’re on the beach, this map shows you what’s across the ocean
This makes it much easier to relate climate for overseas countries. Ocean currents and other effects excluded, the weather in Japan can be similar to California. Another example, Cuba is directly aligned with Western Sahara.
Calcite··on 19 Year Old Heartbleed Hacker Arrested For Hacking the CRA
The article and comments are intense. The most likely scenario is that this 19 year old tested the Heartbleed vulnerability on the CRA and obtained SSN throught the exploit. I doubt the intention was to "steal" them or use them for criminal motive.
Calcite··on Meet the BRCK
What's RJ47? Wouldn't cheap cell phones with 3G and WiFi hotspot negate the need for another device to carry?
Calcite··on Peek Inside Tesla's Robotic Factory [video]
I'm surprised at how the robots can work so closely to the employees without protection cages. They must have strong fail-safe systems in place. Most impressive!
