CGMthrowaway··on Cold War spy satellite named after Farrah Fawcett just exploded in space
USA 32 broke apart on September 13.

It seems obvious to me that this is related to an announcement the very next day - September 14 - wherein Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink publicly confirmed for the first time that the US has active "on-orbit space control weapons" circling the globe.

Either the US destroyed its own decommissioned satellite as a public weapons demonstration, or the sudden "breakup" forced the Pentagon's hand to make the announcement.

CGMthrowaway··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
There are levels to it as well. Take alcohol and driving, for example:

Level A: Who can drink it (possession and consumption law)

Level B: What you can do while drunk (DUI law)

Level C: What you can do while drinking (open container law)

All orthogonal to things like reckless driving, endangerment and creating injurious accidents, which are already criminalized without needing additional laws against alcohol use to enforce them.

CGMthrowaway··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Hopefully enough smart people out there can distinguish between many "AI safety" people and actual AI engineers/scientists at these labs working at the coalface.

AI ethics reminds me of "design thinking" grifters or scrummasters or other such BS jobs of times past.

If you listen in an informed way to these people talk, they are not really as technical as they sound. They are personality hires, woo-woo spellcasters. They are just creating content for a narrative. The grasp of philosophy is not even at par with what you might think it ought to be.

CGMthrowaway··on Eating Fruit Skins
Lots of fruit skins are very edible (kiwis etc.), but they are covered with pesticides. All conventional fruits are.

If you look at the "Dirty Dozen" vs. "Clean Fifteen" lists of fruits/veggies that come out every year, you'll notice that the cleanest fruits are almost always ones that grow with a thick skin or covering, or are covered by soil: banana, pineapple, avocado, corn, (shelled) peas, watermelon, carrot, potato, etc.

And the dirtiest ones have a thin or no skin: greens, stone fruit, blackberries, strawberries, apples, pears etc.

The clean fruits aren't really any cleaner, the study just tests the "edible" part minus the outer skin. If you eat the skin of conventional Clean Fifteen, you might as well be eating a Dirty Dozen.

CGMthrowaway··on Why Bullshit Jobs Are (Finally) Dying [video]
The TLDR is not that interesting, but here you go...

1) BS jobs, in the sense outlined by Graeber (the BS jobs essay guy), proliferated due to easy money/low interest rates

2) money is not so easy anymore

3) AI is taking our jobs

4) BS jobs may actually not be going away, just shifting, e.g. from "culture coordinator" to "AI ethics reviewer"

CGMthrowaway··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
>It boggles my mind that the government has privatized currency to these people.

That's the banks (lenders), not the payment networks.

>Crazy-person-but-actually-really practical-idea: Nationalize one if these networks. Maybe Discover.

The central planners want to. It's called FedNow.

CGMthrowaway··on Searching for the best silicone USB cable
And the plasticizers (DEHP primarily) are really nasty, easily slough off onto your skin where they are absorbed. Don't ever put plastic cable in your mouth, or that of a child
CGMthrowaway··on I've factored the RSA keys of a Certificate Authority from the 90s
Did you have any personal interaction with NSA or their proxies?
CGMthrowaway··on Why getting your hands dirty is good for you
We have this already: "touch grass" for the normies and "grounding" (standing barefoot on the earth) for the more hacker inclined
CGMthrowaway··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
Why wait until after the return policy? Also what firmware did you update to? Also if you could point to a video where it shows how to do all these things that would be amazing
CGMthrowaway··on The auto lobby spent millions on media manipulation
EVs are some of the cheapest cars you can get. All of the American manufacturers sell them at a huge loss, due to government regulations around average mpg for their lineups, etc
CGMthrowaway··on The auto lobby spent millions on media manipulation
The average age of an EV on the road is less than four years, compared to over 12 years for hybrids and ICE vehicles. I'm not suggesting an EV can't also last that long, but it feels premature to say anything is "obvious" about TCO when they are such a new product category
CGMthrowaway··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
That's a lot of words to issue a reproach of people using manipulating "truisms" and propagandic non-specifics, without using any specifics of your own.

You might have a strong argument but you seem to be afraid to name anyone or anything.

CGMthrowaway··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
>Corruption in the US isn't new, but it's never been done as openly as it has been recently.

It's been open a long time. Patriot Act/Snowden/Assange, JFK coverup, shutting churches to keep Walmart open, social media censorship, gerrymandering, immigration enforcement, etc

CGMthrowaway··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
>Crocodiles haven't changed much in 200 million years. Maybe it's possible that a form factor is largely correct

Then why is Apple releasing a folding phone now?

CGMthrowaway··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
Apple has not had an SVP of Industrial Design for 7 years, since Jony Ive left. This is why every phone is a copy of the last and there is no real product innovation anywhere
CGMthrowaway··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
>Ad blocking has become a safety issue. My parents are at an age where they fall for things. If a malicious ad pops up and offers to install McAfee, some other form of crapware, or outright scamware, they'll click that ad and install the thing.

I've been using the internet since the 80s. This has always been the case. Even before graphical browsers.

CGMthrowaway··on Executive order changing name of lake-Ontario
You think a president should be impeached for making a stupid name change? Cape Kennedy, Denali, etc come to mind
CGMthrowaway··on Radiation link in flight attendant's breast cancer, French court finds
Smoking on flights is less dangerous than lithium batteries. At least a cigarette fire can be seen and put out. A lithium battery in thermal runaway can explode and is not possible to extinguish as it is self-perpetuating.
CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Maybe letting other countries rob us blind is worse. The US has hardly any factories left. Is that "peace" or is that just losing, slowly?

Open borders can be GREAT, but they can also be a point of vulnerability if we lose control of them

CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Totally, that is a great and valid add
CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
I totally agree trade should feel fair. If the US sends jobs, money, food or goods to other countries, then we shouldn't get garbage back.

Tariffs are a way of warning other countries "don’t take us for a ride." They help American workers, factories and towns that were hurt when jobs went overseas.

Tariffs shouldn't feel like hurting yourself for no reason. They are an important tool for standing up for yourself when other countries (to say nothing of bad trade deals) want to take advantage of you

CGMthrowaway··on Study reveals UnitedHealth's profit margins four times what it claimed [pdf]
@getnormality Two main differences:

1) medical loss ratio rules mean insurers are expected/required to pass a certain percent of premium on as payment for medical services, in a way that a grocery store is not required

2) insurer is selling you a contract that they will pay your medical bills if you have any - they are NOT retailing you medical services

3)
