CDRdude··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
It reminds me of state-run liquor stores in some US states.
CDRdude··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
> 2: another proposal is to remove law school/JD requirements to obtain a law license, but keeping a rigorous test in place […]

This does exist, but has become less common over time instead of more common. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_law

CDRdude··on The Glass Famine
I find it mildly amusing that fully metric countries are seemingly stuck with some standardized measurements based on imperial units. Like how a soccer/football goal is 8 feet x 24 feet / 7.32 m x 2.44 m. Or how a standard shipping conatiner is 40 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet 6 inches/ 12.192 m x 2.438 m x 2.591 m. Or standard gague railways being 4 feet 8.5 inches / 1.435 m.
CDRdude··on Police officer investigated for using AI to 'create evidence' in multiple cases
If a fictional-but-popular TV show treats some kinds of evidence as more reliable than they really are, juries may be primed to believe in the kind of thing the TV show presents as legitimate.
CDRdude··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
I think legacy USB peripherals are very common. Almost all of my peripherals are legacy USB; I think I only own a single USB-C peripheral. Old stuff still works, so I don't need to buy new ones.
CDRdude··on It takes two neurons to ride a bicycle (2004)
You absolutely can start a bike by pedaling with no forward momentum. You can see it when someone starts pedaling again after a track stand.
CDRdude··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
I'm using an iphone 13, although I prefer to turn sideways and browse in landscape mode. What you consider borderline unusable is just how I prefer to browse reddit.
CDRdude··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
This is available for me on iOS https://old.reddit.com/r/all/
CDRdude··on Fix your robots.txt or your site disappears from Google
Isn’t it somewhat likely that a lot of shady crawlers pretend to be a google bot with their user agent?
CDRdude··on 65% of Hacker News posts have negative sentiment, and they outperform
It probably still is. I have a bit below 500 points and I can’t downvote.
CDRdude··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Maduro was reported winning with 5,150,092 votes, or 51.20000% of the vote, and the main opposition had 44.20000% of the vote. These are considered suspiciously round percentages.
CDRdude··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
“Many people pirate” is a different statement than “too many people pirate games to make that a viable business”.
CDRdude··on 60k kids have avoided peanut allergies due to 2015 advice, study finds
A justification I read once is that the human immune system evolved to deal with a certain amount of pathogens. If you don’t have enough exposure to pathogens, the immune system still tries to do its job, but winds up attacking non-pathogens.
CDRdude··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
Analogies don’t have to be 100% perfect. The Confederate analogy gets the point across just fine.
CDRdude··on Apple files emergency motion to become defendant in US vs. Google [pdf]
There’s a joke in there about the value of Macbooks.
CDRdude··on Bankruptcy judge rejects sale of Infowars to The Onion
The article suggests that this is is a first price sealed bid auction instead of a second price sealed bid auction. Skipping over the more complex nature of the Onion bid, the linked articles states "The total value of The Onion’s bid was $7 million" and "First United American Companies had a higher bid, offering $3.5 million in cash".
CDRdude··on NASA investigation finds Boeing hindering Americans' return to moon
Third shift is the overnight shift at a 24-hour workplace. Usually that means midnight to 8 AM.
CDRdude··on I organized a 20-acre game of Capture the Flag
I think there is a very good chance this game was played at night when there would be few or no people in the park. They do not mention time of day in the post, but most urban capture the flag games are played at night.
CDRdude··on Tens of thousands protest in Germany against the rise of the far right
There’s not just one enemy being sold to the public. We are a nation of consumers and we have varied taste. Other enemies include Democrats, elites, Russia, the trans agenda, Republicans, billionaires, immigrants, fascists, and antifa.
CDRdude··on Fired comedian ordered to get day job back after jokes ruled 'simply funny'
In my country, we have decided that there are some reasons that employers can't fire people for any reason, and that we have protected groups. For example, my employer can't fire me because of my religion or my skin color and I approve of that. I tend to think the other protected categories are good too. I'm pretty okay with making discrimination illegal.
CDRdude··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Is that a useful distinction? In both cases, the event that eventually resulted in a canceled subscription was giving Joe Rogan a Spotify deal.
CDRdude··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
I think some messages will cost more storage than others. I have 4 devices synced to my Signal account. Yesterday, my friend sent me a 6.8 MB cat video[1]. I presume Signal has to store this cat video until I boot up my 4th device and load the queued messages.

[1]: It was a copy of this cat video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8Ud1Cr76j8s

CDRdude··on Maine's constitution has unprintable sections
Which ballot question is that? I haven’t found it in a quick search, and I’m intrigued.
CDRdude··on A functional cure for diabetes is now available in the US
It is unlikely that it will work for type 2 diabetes. This treatment is a way for pancreas cells to start producing insulin again. However, type 2 is typically characterized by insulin resistance, where your body does produce insulin, but doesn't respond adequately to the insulin that is produced.
CDRdude··on Deadly heart attacks are more common on a Monday
Yes, but that law isn’t surprising. The internet brings such a wide variety of life experience and education into the same discussion that there is always someone for whom the statement is obvious given their life experience.
CDRdude··on The US Air Force successfully tested AI-controlled jet fighter
There is a dark joke that I think is appropriate here:

Q: What’s the difference between a wedding and a group of insurgents?

A: I dunno man, I just fly the drone.

CDRdude··on Bard and new AI features in Search
Couldn’t you write something similar about IBM and early personal computers?
CDRdude··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
Twitter is no longer a publicly traded company. Elon Musk owns it now.
CDRdude··on Silphion: a miracle plant thought to be eaten into extinction 2k years ago
The leaves and stems of the potato plant are toxic for humans. We eat the tuber.
CDRdude··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
"Drink driver" and "drink driving" seem to be the British phrases.
