I like to spend time doing computer things and sometimes I write about them and post my thoughts on the interwebz.

Brewer··on Ask HN: HN members with access to Google+, share some invites with other HNers?
I hope that at least everyone on the Google+ team got an invite. Lol.

I`d be pretty upset if I put so much work into something and wasn`t even allowed to use it.

Brewer··on Dotjs — hack the web
This just made my day, keep up the good work.
Brewer··on MapCrunch - Random Google Street View - teleport around the world
This is a really cool site, did you make it yourself? It reminds me of StumbleUpon for Google Maps.
Brewer··on Ask HN: Turning an Android app into a company
Unfortunately I don't see any way to successfully implement virtual goods into my apps. That's a great ideas though. Maybe I'll come up with an idea for a social game and make it free.
Brewer··on Ask HN: How do you decide your company name?
I have two things that I'm working on now and the names just sort of popped into my head. They aren't based on anything and they aren't any sort of wordplay, they just seemed to fit.
Brewer··on Ask HN: What's so great about having two monitors?
That is indeed a problem I run into quite a bit. I develop on my 15.4" laptop with a max resolution of 1366x768.
Brewer··on Hacker CS: The Khan Academy of Computer Science.
Harvard's CS50 is a good course too.

Brewer··on Hacker CS: The Khan Academy of Computer Science.
THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE

I would recommend you give Khan a shout (if you can find an email or phone number for him) and see what he thinks. It's always possible that he might (at some point, not necessarily now) be interested in adding a CS section to Khan Academy.

I'll admit that you're right, the reason I click on the link was because of the comparison to Khan Academy.

Brewer··on Ask HN: Let me help you build your product for free
I'm actually working on something now that is probably pretty trivial. Drop me an e-mail at jjb127@mun.ca if you want to know more.

I don't think that people would want to pay for things that I make, I'm not very good. :)

How come you never see cool things in North America? I guess we'll just have to make do and carry on with our software-infested careers.
Brewer··on Hacker CS: The Khan Academy of Computer Science.
I'm a huge fan of Khan Academy, so I hope that your site will do the name justice. Now I can't imagine that Khan would have a problem, but you should be careful when relating your site with others like this. Some people might think that you're actually aligned with Khan Academy.
Brewer··on Ask HN: How did you get avg 95% in University?
I've actually come to find that all-nights never help. I do terrible work when I'm tired compared to when I'm not and I'm a zombie the next day. The biggest thing you could do I suppose is just start something the day it's assigned. When you have more assignments, rank them based on difficulty, value (grade wise, projects should be important), and the time you expect the assignment to take.
Brewer··on Ask HN: Learning hacks
I love StudyHacks, it's a great site. The same can be said for the article that you linked to, it was enjoyable to read. I only wish that Cal posted more often, but I suppose MIT professors have better things to do.
Brewer··on Ask HN: How did you get avg 95% in University?
I've just read through the replies here and I thought that maybe I'd throw in my two cents. First off, I do not have a 95% average. In fact, I failed 3 out of 5 courses last semester. I had piled Calculus I, Linear Algebra I, and Microeconomics into the same semester and apparently I wasn't ready to take all of those at one time.

Realizing that my GPA was so bad (1.63 as of now) got me pretty depressed. I started Googling how I could fix my GPA and how I could become a better student. I came across a site called StudyHacks (http://calnewport.com/blog/) that had a lot of great articles that were enjoyable to read. I'm going to go to the library in the next week or so and get Cal's book "How to Become a Straight-A Student" (I'd do it now, but I'm reading The Pragmatic Programmer) and I hope that the book will make things more clear.

In the coming year there are a few changes I want to make. The biggest once, contrary to what others on here have said, is that I want to become organized. I've always been the type of person to enjoy what I'll call "organized chaos". There is a place for everything, and that place is wherever it happens to be. That has to change.

The next thing I want to change is that I'm actually going to work on my problem sets. It's been mentioned that problem sets are usually only worth 10 or 15 percent of your final mark. What I find is that while they aren't worth much, not doing your problem sets will affect your test grades in a negative way. Not only are problem sets a grade, they are the best practice that you can get.

The last thing that I want to do is to get involved around my university. We have a CS society that, I'm sad to say, doesn't do much more than drink (not that drinking is a bad thing). I want to get involved with the society, generate new members, and help get the society more active. I have a few ideas that I'm going to bring up with some of the society "executives" that I hope they will like as much as I do.

Obviously I don't have a 95% average, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I hope it will work for me though. And I think that is the biggest thing there is to consider. Just because something worked for someone else, doesn't mean that it will work for you. Try out different things and see what you like.

Brewer··on Ask HN: Ruby/RoR, where to begin?
I'll throw in my two cents on this one. If you don't feel like reading then you should pop on over to NetTuts and check out their "Ruby for Newbies" screencast. There are 11 of them I believe and you can find the first one here: http://goo.gl/jBBY

In addition to Ruby for Newbies they have loads of other tutorials and videos that aren't limited to just Ruby.

Brewer··on Ask HN: Best monitor for software development?
I use a 15.4" laptop for my development. It's a decent little machine (although it's HP, so it has it's share of problems) but I wouldn't recommend such a small screen.

I'm actually trying to decide whether I want to get a MacBook Pro or a new desktop. I'd love a new desktop, but MacBooks look sexy.

As far as the monitor, I've looked around and it looks like I'm attracted to a 24" or so. I'm sure 27" and 30" monitors have their place, but they are too big for me.

Have you considered multiple, smaller monitors? You'd probably save money getting 2 24" as opposed to a single 27".

Brewer··on Tell HN: You should pay me $250 to build something for you.
Thanks. If you read that last paragraph though, I didn't have the idea first. :)

Brewer··on Can we get an alert when someone replies to your comment thread?
Just a thought, if you want to do this then I recommend not posting anything that becomes popular. I wouldn't be happy if I woke up with 100 email notifications that my thread had been replied to.
Brewer··on Tell HN: My startup just got its first paying customer - woohoo
I agree with bakhlawa on this one. Don't make your poor customers do math, they will hate you.
Brewer··on Ask HN: Education-focused start-ups?
KhanAcademy recently won the Google Project 10^100 which got them $10 million. I expect to see great things from this site in the coming months.
Brewer··on Ask HN: What DON'T you like about your Macbook?
Gripes about OS X are more than welcome, seeing as if I migrate to Mac I will probably use it a fair bit.

I've heard that OS X has some pretty good software.

Brewer··on Ask HN: What DON'T you like about your Macbook?
So the three biggest complaints seem to be: 1) Macbooks get too hot, too fast. 2) Noisy fans. 3) Ridiculously lame support for 2 external displays.

I would think that the first problem could be solved by getting a decent cooling pad. You would think that a noisy fan would prevent problem #1, but I guess not. Not much we can do about that.

As far as displays go, I would barely be able to afford the Macbook, I won't be buying two extra monitors!

Does anyone have any tips on how to fix the fan problem?

Brewer··on Ask HN: Why should I switch to a Mac?
What is so great about Textmate? I hear that, as far as text editors go, it's about the best. Personally, I prefer Vim.
Brewer··on Ask HN: Why should I switch to a Mac?
I definitely could use the longer battery life. My HP DV6 that is one year old (as of today, I think -- bye bye warranty) can barely run two hours on one charge.

Brewer··on Ask HN: Working at a Startup vs. Large Companies
Unfortunately, working for free isn't an option for me. On the other hand, I also don't need the $5500+/mn that tech giants like Google and Facebook pay.

I am between my Freshman and Sophomore year now, but I am looking forward to hopefully finding an internship for next summer. I like the idea of doing my own thing if that doesn't work out. I'd still have to work, but I'm sure I would have more than enough time for a side project.

I'm going to be working with one of the CS professors at my school for 2 months starting on Friday, hopefully that will give me a leg up on the competition when it comes time to find an internship. What do you think?
