BrawnyBadger53··on A conversation about AI for science with Jason Pruet
I don't think we should be setting artificial limiters on energy usage or anything but you're using circular reasoning as justification.

These scales use energy usage as the measure of progress which you are saying is proof that reducing energy use is reducing progress.

BrawnyBadger53··on Europe launches program to lure scientists away from the US
Food and water aid being controversial is a bit ridiculous to me.
BrawnyBadger53··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
If the result of this becomes that substantial remixes and fanfiction can be commercialized without permission from authors then I am happy. This stuff should have been fair use to begin with. Granted it probably already is fair use but because of the way copyright is enforced online it is effectively banned regardless.
BrawnyBadger53··on How to live an intellectually rich life
Non-fiction slop also exists. You can just not read the slop. Yeah, you probably aren't getting much out of reading generic fantasy novel with self insert protagonist #12373838 but you also aren't getting much out of generic self help book with surface level advice #1537484. I'd argue fiction sticks better and brings more empathy and feeling behind what it tries to teach than non fiction does usually but is best for teaching things through situational understanding. Not everything condenses well into that format though.
BrawnyBadger53··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
Not them but you are replying on a thread talking about how it isn't safe in the longer future. That context was already built.
BrawnyBadger53··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
Median voters voted for Trump because they wanted a regime change after feeling the economic shock of covid. This is the trend across basically every democratic country. Polls on the issue itself show that this split is not 50/50 though the actual number escapes me.
BrawnyBadger53··on Minestom – An open-source, lightweight Minecraft server built from the ground up
When am I meant to reach for this over Fabric or Paper? Does redstone operate like vanilla?
BrawnyBadger53··on Small Town America vs. Big Box Stores
I feel like this article failed to effectively discuss the very important point that is how these big box stores tend to be a drain on the city's economy. It's sorta there but generally these stores tend to make communities poorer in the long run.
BrawnyBadger53··on Making OCaml Safe for Performance Engineering [video]
Ahrefs, Bloomberg, Meta are the ones that come to mind
BrawnyBadger53··on UCSD: Large Language Models Pass the Turing Test
Thank you, I think I was struggling since they were pictured rather than text.
BrawnyBadger53··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
They're the same person. He's just a techno-optimist and interested in teaching.
BrawnyBadger53··on UCSD: Large Language Models Pass the Turing Test
Where are the prompts they used? If they're actually not in the paper then how is anyone meant to replicate and trust the study?
BrawnyBadger53··on 'Naive' science fan faces jail for plutonium import
Not having the fuzzy zone on speed limits will make people go too slow and build traffic. You're meant to drive right up to the limit and anyone with an analog speedometer has to deal with some visual inaccuracy. It is ridiculous to punish people because the speed limit was 45 and someone is going 46 when 45 isn't even clearly marked on the speedometer for these cars.
BrawnyBadger53··on Tencent's 'Hunyuan-T1'–The First Mamba-Powered Ultra-Large Model
The best thing would be blind preference tests for a wide variety of problems across domains but unfortunately even these can be gamed if desired. The upside is that they are gamed by being explicitly malicious which I'd imagine would result in whistleblowing at some point. However Claude's position on leaderboards outside of webdev arena makes me skeptical.
BrawnyBadger53··on Moving away from US cloud services
For search, Yep by ahrefs is hosted in Singapore, which isn't EU but if the goal is just to get out of the US then it could be a good alternative
BrawnyBadger53··on State Department Will Use AI to Search for 'Pro-Hamas' Students to Deport
When Pro-Hamas is often being used to mean critical of Israeli policy. I find this quite concerning. Unfortunately since the two state solution is relatively pro Palestine and equating Palestine with Hamas is so common we'll just call people who want peace terrorist sympathizers I guess.
BrawnyBadger53··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
Because conflict ended for good when crimea was annexed...
BrawnyBadger53··on Kagi Is Bringing Orion Web Browser to Linux
I'm using Orion with ublock origin right now?
BrawnyBadger53··on Age Verification Laws: A Backdoor to Surveillance
This is less true, slippery slope as a fallacy is having large unclear jumps chained together to make a really improbable outcome because each improbable chain scales off all the previous pieces. But ad hominem as an argument is only really valid when the attack against the person is highlighting conflicts of interest, which is more reason for scrutiny of the original argument than it is cause for ignoring it entirely. You should still attack the argument itself.
BrawnyBadger53··on There's little proof flossing protects your teeth or gums (2016)
Anecdotally, I've had dentists notice the difference between when I am flossing regularly vs not at all and it has shown up in my gum measurements. I would even argue I've seen more benefit from flossing than brushing for my gum health. Though I've never had any cavities as well.
BrawnyBadger53··on Geothermal power is a climate moon shot beneath our feet
Does nuclear need large amounts of government support? I was under the impression that it was much cheaper on the margin than other forms of electricity. I can easily imagine the needed support for the initial cost to build.
BrawnyBadger53··on Pixels Per Degree
I believe you flipped things, PPD does change based on distance, DPI does not. This change based on distance is a feature since when you're really close to a screen it does lower the visual clarity.
BrawnyBadger53··on Pixels Per Degree
This unit is most useful in the context of VR headsets/displays. In that context changing the fov through the lenses on the same screen would lower the effective resolution which is shown through ppd.
BrawnyBadger53··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Unfortunately for them, they are subject to the most interest from emulation devs by far.

BrawnyBadger53··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
I can and do notice when a driver update or similar switches my monitor's refresh rate or mouse polling rate down. In the game I play most there is an inbuilt framerate test tool to see what the best framerate you can notice the difference between visually is. I and many other players are consistent (20 correct in a row) up to 720fps.
BrawnyBadger53··on The Rich Can Afford Personal Care. The Rest Will Have to Make Do with AI
Assuming you're American. The other alternative is some form of public healthcare and refocusing the spending we do on school administration towards more teachers. Refining common core for math and english to actually be well received at large is probably a good step as well. Though I agree AI access is a massive boon in our current system for those who would otherwise never have access to this level of personal help in study.
BrawnyBadger53··on Devin is now generally available
I could definitely see the support response to a major storm being better when it's easier to communicate and identify a specific storm.
BrawnyBadger53··on Google says AI weather model masters 15-day forecast
I thought I remembered this model being released many months ago? Or is this a new update to the model?
BrawnyBadger53··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
They are already mostly segmented off from their friends after school hours. They have killed off one of the final mediums for interaction and are preventing interaction with the rest of their generation's culture. They're also narrowing their world view to be more controlled by the state.
