Borg3··on What Sun got wrong
Yeah, that was amazing. And so, I learned how to provide LILO + agetty on COM1 on every server I was admining :) So, unless there was HW fault, I could just connect to server via serial to check things out.
Borg3··on It's not the end of programming
Yeah right, like I want to take over the shit broccoli haired nephews created... Even for 3x paycheck.. The one who takes it is a looser, being exploited for pennies to fix all the shit. And I bet at the end, you will be fired anyway, because you are not of their kind..

Winners are managers (who hired nephews) and nephews themselfs, they did barely any usefull job and got paid a lot. They should do usefull job instead, like drivers, warehouse jobs, services, farming and other less paid but very importand and usefull jobs.

Borg3··on Version Control for Everything
Cost of keeping all data (up to +100%). If they dont change, no point of really versioning them. Backup of those is simple either, whatever syncing software (incremental).

Docs that often change, its completly different story. I love VCS like features where I can slam 'dot status' to see whats going on, commit when I feel I need snapshot, sync to whatever device I want. And because I run DVFS I dont even bother with backups because I have multiple copies of repo with entire history.

Borg3··on Version Control for Everything
But versionning everything is not really great idea. Probably 90% of your files are static. Archives, Media, LIBs. Not worth versioning. But for that 10%, having any (D)VFS is handy. Thats why I wrote DOT for myself, to handle that niche need to version every document I work with.

Its private for now, but here is printout of help: http://borg.uu3.net/~borg/?dot

Borg3··on HTML over WebSockets: real-time SPAs with barely any JavaScript
Damn, im must be very bad then: 210 lines @ src/webirc.rb Skeletal test, just to move data from/into websocket. Nothing more...

Anyway, yes, doable. But compared to HTTP1/1 request or just TCP socket, way more complicated. That was unexpected.

Borg3··on HTML over WebSockets: real-time SPAs with barely any JavaScript
Hehe, yeah.. I recently touched WebSockets and yes, its complicated stuff. But hey, for vibe coders everything is easy, right? ;)
Borg3··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Spoken like a true websurfer. You know, networking is not only about WWW.
Borg3··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I know DN42, but this network is more oriented toward R&D and experimenting. Yeah, its not for your avarage Joe. But your avarage Joe can buy connection from VPN provider and use it, and so we can provide user friendly PoPs with minimal skills needed to setup, supporting different VPN software.
Borg3··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Nah, it needs to be IP. IP is well estabilished protocol, everything speak it. Once you set it up, you can use it whatever you like. Web pages, gaming service, IRC, Mail, P2P confereces, everything. Everyone will bring it own slice to the pie. You love networking, became PoP and peer and provide access. You just want content? Connect to closest PoP, get IP + DNSproxy and vioala.
Borg3··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
How I can strugle to keep them off? To peer to network, you need to talk to human. Arrange L2 connection, assign IPs (only static). If its leaf node, we are done. If its another network, we need to form BGP connections to exchange routing.

Yeah, Network by Humans for Humans. Thats why Im not interested in all those IoT/Auto networks when you just connect and stuff automagically configure. It looks nice at first glance, but you loose control. F2F works way better in that matter, like RetroShare, but I never investigated it much.

Borg3··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
The alternative is simple.. Go dark. VPN tech is known from like 30 years. Pretty much everyone can use it (VPN providers). But instead using it to browse net, build VPN overlay networks of interest for people. Gaming networks, R&D networks, Retro Networks. People will peer to PoP and use resources. Bad actor? BAN it from network. You have control. This could be done in Internet, but big corpos and big money won the battle. Just wake F*ing up...
Borg3··on Everything you do is being recorded
And this is what I worry about. Seriously. My online footprint is minimal. I just hope gov will be still incompetent and lazy...
Borg3··on Crickets as pets
Beetles? Hmm I never heard about that. Spiders, yes.. And they are huge :)
Borg3··on Microsoft Is Quietly Deleting Mentions of 32 GB RAM Recommendation for Win 11
Haha, I love such statements.. Well I run old Windows w/ 16GB RAM, and on fresh boot it uses around 128MB RAM, leaving plenty of RAM for apps...

Headless Linux is even better, 3GB RAM, 19MB on boot..

Borg3··on LG Monitors Caught Installing Adware and App with Access to All System Resources
Because this is not "Your computer" anymore, but "This PC" :)) muauhauhauhau.
Borg3··on What will be left for us to work on?
And yet, there is a lot said about how youngsters cannot read with understanding... Fun times ahead...
Borg3··on What Do We Know About the Microplastics Inside Us?
Once microplastics fall apart futher, to nano-plastic, it will start to get absorbed by T cells because they want to destroy any invaders. Once absorbed, T-Cell start to produce H2O2 to destroy anything they absorbed. Unfortunately, plastics are mostly chemically neutral and so, it cannot be destroyed like that. T-Cells produce more H2O2, eventually it leaks outside and start inflamation of surrunding tissue. There is research about it.
Borg3··on How We Made IPFS Content Publishing 10x Faster
Comment there made me chuckle..: serving only small static HTML+JS files (<10MiB)

sigh So entire IPFS + IPFS Gateway needs to be so huge? 10MB? My dot.exe (DVFS repo manager) is 150kB..

Borg3··on A retrospective of my time on the internet
Sure, I love text. But I also like HTTP flexibility and ability to embed pics. JavaScript itself is also nice additionion.

Take a look at this: http://borg.uu3.net/~borg/

This is my homepage. Not possible to replicate on gopher from 2 reasons. First, I use JS to render stuff so it looks nice. Second, page is not hosted on IP you are reaching...

Borg3··on How We Made IPFS Content Publishing 10x Faster
Yeah.. IPFS is a bit disappointement. I was a bit exceited about it back in the day. Recently, I wanted to download sth large from archive.org, I used torrent (and my legacy torrent client) and it worked like a charm!

It seems pure HTTP tracker + Torrent is good enough.

Borg3··on The Internet I Grew Up with Doesn't Exist Anymore
I dont understand fastination of gopher... its inferior protocol compared to HTTP. Yes, today HTTP2/0 and up is bloated crap. But hey, you know there is good old HTTP1/1 that still can be used? Why bother with gopher when you can setup nice and lean webpage? Okey. there is one valid point for that, AI scrappers..
Borg3··on Building Principia for Windows XP
I actually wanted to try it (maybe I will do), but on github page I read its experimental and lots of dialogs arent implemented. So a bit shame it cannot be fully ported. Maybe I will take a bite and try to build it using my dated mingw gcc 4.9 ;)
Borg3··on Linux on Older Hardware: The Complete Revival Guide
What do you mean what context? Just move yourself 10 years in past and see how RAM much web browsing used.. There is just no sane reason why it balooned so much.

Of course, progress needs to be done. Better graphics, more data.. But now all the consumption goes into shitty decoration with is useless and waste resources.

Other big usage is all that ads and tracking shit behind the scene..

Borg3··on Ask HN: Who here would agree to replace parliaments with LLMs?
Dont. Its super stupid idea. I said it before but I will said it again. AI/LLM with current form is pure stupidty. Humans try to move their highest asset, aka Inteligence, analitical thinking, science into AI. Like fucking what? This is what made humans colonize entire planet. Not because they are strong and resistant spieces, but because they are inteligent and addaptive. If you want to offload that to AI, then humans arent really needed. Why would you need billions of consumers (paracities) that dont do anything usefull? Waste of fucking resources.

This is needed now, because it generates income to billionaries. Now focus. With current trend, when we replace workforce with automation and AI, humans are needed less and less. So billionaries can build they autonomic empires with AI/robots all around, no need to humans. Thats like dream for them, never ending fun, and no need to worry about billions of people to feed and keep them in check. Biggest loosers of this are all those scientists and engineers who are cutting branch they sit on... For suck a smart people, they are really stupid and shotsighted..

What is needed is technocracy. Democracy is a failure. How billions of consumers can elect someone smart? Not really possible. We need smart people to rule the system, not AI. If we put AI on charge, humans will be eliminated, because its just burden to the planet.

Interesting system existed in Japan, from 50s to 90s. A War Economy adapted to make consumers goods. It worked very well, to the point that US was pissed off because it couldnt compete. So they put smart plan to invert it. And they suceeded.

Borg3··on Linux on Older Hardware: The Complete Revival Guide
Its a pathetic world.. and sad.. I have currently 2 browsers open and my memory commit is 370MB.. If I hear that Win11 uses 3GB of RAM idling, I really get shivers... WTF?! How is that even possible? Bloat is astronomical and yet.. Most people just does NOT care...
Borg3··on Reviving a Quarter Century-Old Server
Haha, I love how that old HW was built to last. Incredible. My old server is still going strong ;)

14:11:03 up 2435 days, 1:14, 4 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

Borg3··on Ask HN: How long have you been looking for a job?
Hah, Im in similar situation, but I am network/IT admin. I think its worse, because who need networking guy? You just plug it in and it works, right? ;)
Borg3··on Leo's first encyclical attacks technological messianism
Normally, its the one who understand technology, can control it. Unfortunately, its not the case anymore. Stuff got unnecessary complex and bloated, hard to grasp it alone. Also, now AI plays the new role too.

Dark times ahead...

Borg3··on Why Ruby Still Feels Like Home After All These Years
Exacly. And I love its written in C. You need to extend Ruby w/ your favorite Graph Library? You just slap .c glue code and vioala it works like a charm!
Borg3··on Classic 7 is a Windows 10 LTSC mod to look 1:1 to Windows 7
Nah, its not rose tinted glasses. Win2000/Win2003 were amazing. I still run Win2003 because it just workz. GUI is great, it snappy, I have all the tools to tinker here and there.. Leaked SRC code helps tiny bit ;)

Win7 wasnt that bad, you still could set classic GUI. If they only kept it like this and plow money to improve kernel...
