BooneJS··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
4 high-power and 4 low-power cores.
BooneJS··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
As my mom told my brother and I: I don’t care who started it. I care who ends it.
BooneJS··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
This isn’t and end, it’s a new beginning. Talk is cheap, and if Biden wants to heal the nation he’s going to need to walk the line between disparate groups. Go back to first principles on what it means to be an American, adapt it for 2020, and make more room at the table for people who will debate and compromise instead of point and shame.
BooneJS··on eBird: A crowdsourced bird sighting database
I’ve used daily eBird alerts in my county to spot some neat visitors. I haven’t had the time to go look, ID, and contribute, but that’s the beauty of crowdsourcing!
BooneJS··on JuliaMono – a monospaced font for scientific and technical computing
I worked on a Haskell code base that had Unicode enabled. It rendered GitLab’s search useless, and vim/emacs had different key combos to enter them. We eventually worked them out of our code due to the hassle.
BooneJS··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
Spreadsheets like Excel or Google Docs, with the expandability offered by VB and JavaScript, allow for rapid development of applications that require data storage and data interpretation in one package. I’ve seen them used and abused for several functions over the course of my career.

Apple/Claris FileMaker has had this niche for a bit, but it’s only been a niche,

BooneJS··on Why I left my tenured academic job
That makes sense. I suppose it’s easier to blend in on a team then the lead name with a team of students behind you.
BooneJS··on Why I left my tenured academic job
How does “publish or perish” relate to “my job at a public company evaluates my performance every 6 to 12 months?”
BooneJS··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
Replaced DOS/Win3.1 with OS/2 Warp in high school. Learned enough REXX and Pascal to be dangerous.
BooneJS··on DM41x: a modern take on the HP-41CX
My 48GX broke at the bottom of my bag in college, so I replaced it with a 48G. The G is still going strong, and I continue to keep it at my desk today.
BooneJS··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
Unsurprising. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/09/18/reaction-...

> Breaking: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who refused to consider President Obama’s choice months before the 2016 election, said in a statement Friday hours after Ginsburg’s death: “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.”

BooneJS··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
They announced a 2nd delay a few days ago. Hoping it’s the last.
BooneJS··on What the interns have wrought, 2020 edition
Bravo for not only having internships that matter, but highlighting them as well.
BooneJS··on Ice Lake AVX-512 Downclocking
They made it sound like some instructions were more power hungry than others. The impression I got is that the unit can run some kinds of streams without reduction Of clock.
BooneJS··on Titan in Depth: Security in Plaintext
This article is from 2017. Take a look at what is happening in open source with OpenTitan. https://opentitan.org/
BooneJS··on Ice Lake AVX-512 Downclocking
At Hot Chips 32 this week, Intel mentioned that Tiger Lake Xeon with Sunny Cove core would only downclock if AVX-512 usage hit TDP limits.
BooneJS··on Black Sky satellites return images just 58 hours after launch
The night sky, for those that can see the Milky Way, is going to look like Wall•E soon, right? Gone are the days of Iridium flares.
BooneJS··on Fortnite seems to have been removed from the Play Store as well
Will my kid be able to buy new skins with something other than vbucks when this is all said and done?
BooneJS··on Single Page Applications using Rust
Is blocking WASM a thing yet? I guess I wouldn’t know if I’ve launched a WASM page, but I was curious if WASM was popular enough for IT security folks to block on enterprise computers.
BooneJS··on Epic Systems workers are organizing
For those interested, Google’s Madison office has some openings for software and hardware engineers. Our office is downtown in the same building as The Sylvee, and Google has publicly announced that voluntary WFH has been extended through June 2021 to allow employees the confidence to commit to personal arrangements until then.
BooneJS··on NASA Astronauts in SpaceX Capsule Make First Water Landing Since 1975
Uninformed prediction: next landing site will be further from shore.
BooneJS··on NASA Astronauts in SpaceX Capsule Make First Water Landing Since 1975
Congrats to the NASA and SpaceX teams. Awesome public/private partnership!
BooneJS··on Microsoft and Bytedance Put TikTok Talks on Hold After Trump Signals Opposition
It’s supposed to be. I think we’ve seen recently that laws only matter if they’re enforced. They can’t just exist.
BooneJS··on Google Earth Timelapse
While not as devastating as some shown here, 44.3171003, -91.2593236 will show you one frac sand mine in Wisconsin where they’ve leveled an entire hill and shipped it out west. They even built a plant and several new railroad tracks for it.
BooneJS··on The Design of Scalar AES Instruction Set Extensions for RISC-V
What’s the strategy for operating systems, compilers, and/or language runtimes to figure out what a RISC-V chip supports? It used to be one thing checking which SIMD units an x86 had, but the nature of an open source processor lends itself to a near infinite listing of /proc/cpuinfo flags.
BooneJS··on Americans are getting more nervous about what they say in public
My village’s Facebook page offers a counter-example to this article. When it comes to wearing masks or virtual/in-person school, there’s no amount of vitriol the most vocal won’t say.
BooneJS··on Nikon Issues Small Recall for a 16-Year-Old Film Camera

BooneJS··on Apple Silicon: The Passing of Wintel
Right. Because AMD had the same instructions (but presumably different pipeline timings?), they kept their secrets behind a bit of a wall which added friction for people who would have liked extra performance but not been willing to jump through the hoops required to get it.

So now Intel chips are limiting battery life because every application is executing unoptimized garbage that runs longer and therefore uses more energy. Meanwhile, Apple Xcode will produce optimized binaries for Apple Silicon and the press will go wild.

BooneJS··on Apple Silicon: The Passing of Wintel
It also makes building high-performance open source software challenging. Intel or AMD? If Intel, is the MKL library installed? The support matrix grows a bit out of hand.
