I have a 1st gen kindle but haven’t used it in ages after I got a paperwhite. It can be traded in for a free Oasis? Woa.

BooneJS··on Show HN: I built an app to create repeatable checklists to help with ADHD
iOS has a setting to indicate what level of privacy notifications need. My Lock Screen notifications just say the app, not the content.
BooneJS··on Ranked-Choice Voting Helped Wreck Minneapolis
For those without a WSJ subscription, it’s an opinion piece authored by Vin Weber, former congressman (R-MN) and lobbyist who worked with Paul Manafort in Ukraine, and Annette Meeks, current CEO of the Freedom Foundation of Minnesota, a conservative/libertarian small government think tank. Mr. Weber also works there now.

TL;DR: RCV brought Minneapolis weak leadership partly because it failed in its promise to increase voter turnout and improve the tone of campaigns. Minneapolis has had 3 RCV mayoral elections, and it mentions NYC also, but the majority of the piece offers pretty standard lines about how city is run by a politically correct mob and has no direction.

I wish the RCV part provided more data to back up its role in the current situation, but the authors seem more upset that it elected a Democrat.

BooneJS··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
I’ve seen several physics majors hired as software engineers.
BooneJS··on ‘Great Resignation’ gains steam as return-to-work plans take effect
No, we’re actually all hardware and software engineering in Madison.
BooneJS··on Tesla said to erupt in flames, briefly trap owner after electronic doors fail
The pickup process during the pandemic is really hands off. I didn’t discover the mechanical release on the Y until my kid thought it reclined his seat while we are driving at highway speeds.
BooneJS··on ‘Great Resignation’ gains steam as return-to-work plans take effect
Google and Amazon are both in Madison.

BooneJS··on Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees
The job market is really tight, and if others offer near-Facebook-level comp with WFH, they have to compete.
BooneJS··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
It’s actually illegal to drill a well in a municipality that provides water service. You’d have to move to a rural area.
BooneJS··on Transitioning to Tesla Vision
Will my Model Y continue to use radar as backup? Or will it be turned off?
BooneJS··on Ask HN: How much do you contemplate per week?
I drank so much coffee in the office. At home it takes longer and I get distracted.
BooneJS··on Tesla Continues to Walk Back Full Self-Driving Claims
I wanted long freeway rides and driving in stop and go traffic to be less painful. I wanted to be able to watch my $10k in February 2021 turn into something really cool within a year.

Honestly, I think I’m safer with auto steer on. I’ve had the car hit the brakes when someone turns across my lane and I felt it was too conservative, but then I started wondering if I was too aggressive.

I wanted to watch my Model Y get smarter as OTA updates came in.

BooneJS··on Tesla Continues to Walk Back Full Self-Driving Claims
So what did I pay $10k for?
BooneJS··on Piano teacher gets copyright claim for Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata [video]
My daughter got her first content claim when she was a 7 year old violinist. Proud father moment.

Dispute was allowed to lapse.

I’m on day 22 or so of another dispute from my son’s violin performance. I don’t see this going anywhere either.

BooneJS··on Nano 5.7
Nano was my gateway editor when learning *nix in college. I tried vi only to have to close the window to exit. I think nano can continue to safely bring in converts from Windows and MacOS.
BooneJS··on Apple sued for terminating account with $25k worth of apps and videos
It seems the prudent thing would be to allow access to existing material while preventing them from doing anything to their account besides changing the password.
BooneJS··on Biden eyeing tax rate as high as 43.4% in next economic package
Please remember that punitive changes like limiting SALT hurts actual people before it causes changes in the way state governments run.
BooneJS··on Intel in talks to produce chips for automakers within six to nine months
If it’s just standard cells, then it could go quick. Change technology library and synthesize. But if there’s process-specific IP (analog serdes, non-standard cells, etc), then that takes work. I presume most automobile chips are not leading node high-speed switches.
BooneJS··on Intel in talks to produce chips for automakers within six to nine months
That, and 3-4 months for manufacturing and test between tapeout and power-on. Automotive silicon has different test requirements than your average laptop widget.
BooneJS··on Intel in talks to produce chips for automakers within six to nine months
9 months from inception to first silicon is close to the speed of light, development and manufacturing-wise. I wish them good luck, as this is impacting several industries downstream.
BooneJS··on Tesla's EPA Driving Ranges Didn't Hold Up to Testing
My 2021 Model Y hasn’t hit 325 miles. Ever. I drove 306 miles yesterday and I needed 47 minutes of >60kW charging and 9 minutes of <60kW at superchargers. I left home at 90%, and returned home with 23% battery, so I could have cut it closer. I wish Tesla SuperCharger history would tell me exactly the kWh per charge. And honestly, I wish the on-board miles remaining estimate were based on the energy used over the last 30 miles and not EPA rating.
BooneJS··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
I would argue that states and municipalities would continue to pay whatever was necessary to keep the roads passable for families and commerce. They’ll have to pass it on with tax increases or service cuts elsewhere. To allow the roads to get worse in the face of monopolistic pricing isn’t an option.
BooneJS··on SpaceX delivers 3rd batch of Starlink satellites in two weeks
Like most engineering projects with continuous improvement, the newer satellites are less reflective than the older ones.
BooneJS··on SpaceX delivers 3rd batch of Starlink satellites in two weeks
I think terminology can mean different things to different people. Typically space junk refers to decommissioned or otherwise useless satellites. But if you’re a ground-based astronomer taking long exposure photographs, the trails of reflective satellites are of no use to you.
BooneJS··on SpaceX delivers 3rd batch of Starlink satellites in two weeks
My high school daughter has really gotten into astronomy and space in the last few years, and is torn between celebrating the 9th use of the same first-stage rocket and hating the pieces of space junk it’s delivering to low earth orbit.
BooneJS··on Adobe Photoshop ships on Macs with Apple Silicon
It was my understanding that apps without special x86-only inlined assembly would be straightforward to port. This could hint that LR, as slow as it is, actually has special vectorized or otherwise performance-boosted sections of code.
BooneJS··on 100Mbps uploads and downloads should be US broadband standard, senators say
This would be 100 Mbps faster than the non-existent cable that stopped 4 miles from my dad’s home in Wisconsin. They went down a rural road 40 years ago hooking up houses who wanted and stopped when they reached a home that said no. They had wireless for a while but the company shut down. Starlink is his only real hope.
