BluSyn··on [dead]
What an incredibly biased article. CEO's always talk positively about their company and roadmap. So by this logic any executive who sells stock at any time must be engaged in a pump and dump? It's sad people eat up such clickbait without critical thought.

Elon stated his reasons for selling quite explicitly:

-------

"In the (hopefully unlikely) event that Twitter forces this deal to close and some equity partners don’t come through, it is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock."

"so if the twitter deal doesnt close, will you buy Tesla stock again?"

"Yes"

------

TSLA is about to do a stock split, and the price is expected to go up as a result. If anything this was the worst time to sell. If he ends up buying back in later, it will be at a loss. Where's the gains here?

BluSyn··on Andrej Karpathy leaves Tesla
I don't recall Tesla ever saying they were producing Optimus as a product any time soon. He's said prototype demo later this year. A prototype is very far from a finished product. As a product businesses/consumers can buy, at least 5+ years from now.
BluSyn··on Logitech MX Products are incompatible with AirPods
Good question. Best guess: Better EMI shielding on newer products / different cell frequencies on newer phones. Perhaps combination of both?
BluSyn··on Earth moves far under our feet: Study shows Earth’s inner core oscillates
It's fascinating to think there's so little we really know of our own planet. Our knowledge about the inner workings of Earth's core are all from indirect measurements, and there's a fundamental limit to the resolution of our models using these methods. I'm sure there's so much more to learn, and many more surprises, if we discover novel new ways to inspect deep underground.
BluSyn··on Today’s JavaScript, from an outsider’s perspective (2020)
I use JS/TS every day. I tried to understand the intricacies in module/import issues. Just reading about it gave me a headache, and tempted me to just rewrite my entire project in Rust.

I'm still tempted some days.

It's beyond painful. It's infuriating.

BluSyn··on Tesla's Safety Record vs. Volvo
You can't compare absolute numbers of deaths in a year vs. number of cars sold in that year. Safety is calculated as injuries per miles driven. For death rate, it is usually shown as deaths per 100k miles driven.

Vehicles sold here is also a mis-leading number. It is talking about Volvo's total safety across all models, but then only including sales numbers for it Electric Vehicles. Tesla sells many more EVs than Volvo.

It talks about battery fires in Tesla models, which are rare. But ignores how many fires happen in ICE vehicles, even though the are far more common.

Everything in this article is mis-leading and low quality analysis.

BluSyn··on Tesla's Safety Record vs. Volvo
The chart is obviously misleading. More volume would mean fewer deaths PER miles driven, but this is showing absolute numbers of deaths for ONLY electric models. Volvo has many more models besides EVs. The chart would be fair if all models were included, and if it was relative to road usage, eg. deaths per 100k miles driven.
BluSyn··on GSuite legacy users can now get a free personal account, includes Gmail
Agreed about Fastmail. Very happy with switching over.

I also tried ProtonMail before switching to Fastmail. I liked some of the security advantages of PM, but being forced to use their client due to E2E was too difficult in the long run. I missed seamless calendar integrations, managing multiple emails from one UI, etc. Also Fastmail is slightly cheaper.

I've also completely switched over to Apple native Mail/Calendar clients. Both apps I used to despise, but all alternatives I tried have failed to match feature parity (or have serious data privacy concerns).

BluSyn··on Researchers demo Bluetooth relay attack against Tesla
Could latency/time-of-flight threshold be reduced to determine proximity? Requires very accurate clocks on both ends, and support in the wireless cards. Apple developed something similar for Apple Watch unlock on MacOS [1].

BluSyn··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
Doesn’t require phone? Supported by desktop browsers also. Third party “auth managers” should be possible — likely integrated into existing password managers?
BluSyn··on We’ve got a science opportunity overload: Launching the Wolfram Institute
Innovation largely comes from contrarians. If HN is polarized on a topic, to me that just signals it's probably worth MORE attention, not less.

From that perspective, overwhelming negative comments are a useful data point.

BluSyn··on What is triald and why is it taking so much disk space?
I checked mine, and I see lots of mention of "Siri" (TEXT TO SPEECH, FIND MY, etc). Seems most likely this is A/B testing for ML models, such as those for Siri and Photos analysis?

That's my best guess. Since Siri and Photos now processes more locally (especially on M1's dedicated ML cores), all the training improvements and testing probably happen locally as well.

It makes sense it would regularly download updates for ML models. I'm more curious about what data gets uploaded back to Apple...

BluSyn··on Qualcomm is adding AV1 support, which could be huge for online video
I'm hoping future Apple chips have AV1 decode support as well. If Intel, Google, Qualcomm, and Apple all add AV1 support in hardware, it would become the gold standard as far as codecs go. Right now it's all a mixed bag.
BluSyn··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
I actually agree with you in general.

> "Don't believe the evidence in front of you! 'Think for yourself' and 'Make up your own reality!'"

I never said this. Evidence is very important. Notably Mick West offered no new "evidence", only supposition. Supposition in direct contradiction to known facts of the case (eg, other sensors, pilot reports, visual confirmations, etc).

I never claimed to know the answer. But I do claim that Mick West is generating faulty conclusions derived from bad assumptions. So in this case you could make a compelling argument that Mick West is the conspiracy theorist. So we go around and around debunking the debunker who debunked the debunker.

It's all a waste of oxygen.

BluSyn··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
Unfortunately, radar data - from all the incidents in question - will never be released, as the hardware involved is highly classified. We only get footage from the IR camera because the IR tech is not "classified" (basically off-the-shelf FLIR cameras with fancy object tracking software).
BluSyn··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
FYI, Mick West is not an "expert". He has no experience with military hardware. Everyone involved in the incident, or has background knowledge of the classified details, says there are multiple sensors confirming the footage, including direct visual by the pilots. This can not possibly be explained by "lens flair".

People say trust the experts. Well, in this case, the experts are the ones who know the military hardware, who flew the plane, who tracked the objects (plural) on radar. That is not Mick West. Mick West is a professional debunker, which means he analyses these videos with a baked-in assumption that it's "fake", not from an unbiased view.

If you fall for Mick West's BS, you aren't any different from UFO nuts who fall for Steven Greeer's. I suggest thinking for yourself instead.

BluSyn··on SoftBank's Sale of Arm to Nvidia Collapses, Arm to IPO
SoftBank is desperate for capital due to recent bad bets. ARM is one of the most valuable assets they have. As for ARM itself, this probably isn't the best path forward, and neither option would even be considered if it weren't for SoftBank's current predicament.

BluSyn··on Proof-of-Stake and Stablecoins: A Blockchain Centralization Dilemma
Taking your analogy: that doesn't make going to bowling alley as an evil alternative to video games? We should all acknowledge that's a straw-man argument. But this is the kind of argument you hear against PoW. For all we know they are driving electric cars to the bowling alley. Does that make the scenario different? How's that different from PoW powered by solar?
BluSyn··on Proof-of-Stake and Stablecoins: A Blockchain Centralization Dilemma
We're seeing the fruits of years of relentless climate narratives connecting all energy usage to pollution, and therefore all energy consumption (for any purpose) is considered inherently evil.

Does that mean everyone who plays video games after work is literally satan for consuming energy for mere entertainment?

Life itself consumes energy; does this mean the universe would be better off without us in it?

This is obviously a nihilistic viewpoint once you follow it to it's natural conclusion.

I expect the future will have a combination of both PoW and PoS due to fundamental trade-offs. So I got news for everyone. Proof-of-work exists and isn't going anywhere. You can't just yell at the clouds wishing we could make it illegal for "environmental reasons". PoW is not "incompatible with climate change mitigation", this is obviously a straw-man. There's plenty of energy to go around, and we have to solve the climate+energy crises either way. Not to mention Co2 emissions alone is just one small part of the overall climate concern.

I'm more interested in individuals and organizations willing to actually solve technical problems related to energy and climate, and choose to ignore those just yelling at politicians to solve it for them.

BluSyn··on 2021 Tesla Model Y review: Nearly great, critically flawed
I have an early build 2018 Model 3 Performance. I have experienced almost zero quality issues. I use Autopilot frequently and have experienced phantom braking maybe 5 times ever in 3+ years, and certainly isn't a deal-breaker. In fact it's improved dramatically since I first got the car.

I feel like all I ever hear from outside the Tesla owner bubble is quality issues, complaints, weird problems I've never experienced. When I talk to other Tesla owners, they also are confused by this phenomena, because the vast majority I've talked to have the same experience as me; complete joy in the product, very few if any complaints at all. Especially relative to any other car I have owned or is available on the market today, I wouldn't recommend buying anything else.

When people talk about annoying Tesla fanboys, this is the core of problem. On the one hand you have the public perception of Tesla cars, based on reviews like this one. Then you have actual experience from the *majority* of owners being the exact opposite. Tesla certainly has issues, but so does GM, Ford, and every other auto maker. Reviewers rarely shout these issues in the headlines. But with Tesla it's always different.

What are we do to about this instead? Why is every review of Tesla highlighting the flaws, whereas every review of non-EV cars highlight the positives? How come Tesla owners don't get to write about their positive experiences without being called fanboys or shills?

BluSyn··on Apple will notify users about state-sponsored cybersecurity threats
I see a lot of pessimism in the comments. But I think this is a great step in the right direction.

Other companies should take note. More of this, please!

BluSyn··on App is getting 500 server error. Cant connect
Unlocking through the app requires server and phone cell signal. Phone (Blutooth) unlocking and key card unlocking do NOT require connectivity. That would be dumb, phone cell signal doesn't work everywhere.

BluSyn··on M1 Pro and M1 Max MBP owners complain of crashes playing HDR YouTube videos
Is this easily reproducible? Not sure how widespread this problem is.

I have viewed 4k HDR content on YouTube in Safari AND Chrome several times. It was the first thing I did when I received my 16" M1 Pro. And I have not experienced a single crash with this laptop.

I tested VP9 and AV1 codecs on youtube without issue. I am on macOS 12.0.1

BluSyn··on Teardown of Apple's new USB-C to MagSafe 3 (140W) cable [video]

BluSyn··on Tesla must pay $137M to ex-worker over hostile work environment, racism
The point of my comment was the warn against such an outcome. I thought that was obvious. If the alternative is bankruptcy, large companies will do just about anything to survive it.
BluSyn··on Tesla must pay $137M to ex-worker over hostile work environment, racism
It is insane. There's a huge line between justice and grift, and I mainly blame lawyers for the latter. If every claim of hostile workplaces resulted in similar settlements, every company would be bankrupt within a few years. A company can have a strict zero tolerance policy, but they can't police every action of every employee while on the clock. Such settlements would likely incentivize companies to put cameras and microphones everywhere, including bathrooms, which would also result in "emotion distress".

Forced arbitration isn't just either, but the court system hasn't left much room for alternative with such overreaching punishments.
