BlackRing··on US has underestimated Huawei, says founder
I agree. From another perspective, China has been a blatant power in the theft of IP from all over the world and we have been turning a blind eye to it for quite some time.

A lot of people joke about 'Chinese knockoffs' and the 'chinesium' metal alloys that permeate the knockoff/shoddy products but it has some serious problems.

This pushback is long overdue and frankly needed.

BlackRing··on Microsoft’s Edge for Mac browser now available in preview
I would have believed that if it were HP. Snark aside, it is unusual behavior coming from Microsoft.
BlackRing··on What makes ramen noodles so special?
I was thinking it's more of a college thing. It was a staple of early college life and sometimes after graduation due to how inexpensive it was when bought as a bulk purchase. Combined with some cheap spices and veggies and this is your basic college survival life for under $50 a month. At least it was like that 15-20 years ago. Prices don't seem to have gone up too much since either.
BlackRing··on A Decade of Remote Work
I didn't realize it was called The Pomodoro Effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique) until now, and it's been the one approach to my work that's had the most success.

Cal Newport's book looks interesting, so I'll take a look at that and give it a look. Thanks!

BlackRing··on A Decade of Remote Work
Remote work taught me that working in batches can really drive up my efficiency. 2.5 hours at the start of the day, a half hour break, then another period of work about the same length, and then finally one more. I find this breaks up things and allows the 'down time' to settle in my head so I can come back and prep to get "in the zone" for another two hour purely focused work period. All that ties in wonderfully to his routine keeping, which is a great template to work with.

It helps to shut off all notifications on your phone or computer as well, including email.

BlackRing··on Incognito no more: Publishers close loopholes as paywall blockers emerge
No, they didn't. There is nothing preventing someone from easily sharing content in spite of how "easy" it is to monetize it.
BlackRing··on Incognito no more: Publishers close loopholes as paywall blockers emerge
No, go back and read my comments again. Stop debating something I didn't bring up and trying to push an irrelevant point of view.
BlackRing··on Incognito no more: Publishers close loopholes as paywall blockers emerge
You seem to be stuck on the idea that it's about money, and it's not.

My entire argument isn't that it can be monetized easily (https://www.facebook.com/help/publisher/321041698514182 it can) but that there are dozens of EASY ways to publish things and do so freely.

It's literally dead simple.

BlackRing··on Incognito no more: Publishers close loopholes as paywall blockers emerge
Do you realize how easy it is to set up a facebook page, wordpress or blogger blog? Tons of non-technical people have done and continue to do this. This isn't about your average HN reader but the general public and they're competent enough to do these things by themselves, which has already been proven.
BlackRing··on Incognito no more: Publishers close loopholes as paywall blockers emerge
I disagree. Technical ease has nothing to do with monetization and it's extremely easy to set up.

There's nothing stopping people from continuing this either. There are myriad ways to promote your own creations.

In fact there was a recently promoted site called https://1mb.site/ which allowed a small free website. If you hotlink your images from your own https://imgur.com account, you can have a relatively easy site.

BlackRing··on California bill to add more housing in single-family neighborhoods blocked
Exactly my thought. This isn't about needs, it's about economic rights. If I can afford two homes and choose to buy them, I'm within my rights to do so. Attempting to limit the rights of people isn't going to go very well.
BlackRing··on Senior Developers Are Getting Rejected for Jobs
Programming tests are what generally have me shying away from finding another job. It really makes me feel like I'm back at school trying to prove myself for a test, when in fact my portfolio on github or whatever I've included with my resume to the hiring/hr/interviewer should suffice.

But a whiteboard test? It's almost insulting.

BlackRing··on Unlimited Google Drive storage by splitting binary files into base64
I remember using it back in 2005 iirc, and it was amazing. The files had a label called gmailfs.gDisk which is how it could keep the "file system" separate from the rest.

Now Google generously offers Drive with 15Gigs of space.

BlackRing··on San Francisco bans facial recognition technology by municipal agencies
That loophole of govt getting things from third parties without due process needs to be plugged.
BlackRing··on Uber Drivers Are Contractors, Not Employees, Labor Board Says
This is by good design. Laws and action made in haste are rarely positive.
BlackRing··on Signal, a fast, secure and simple messenger endorsed by Snowden
riot/matrix is substantially worse in usability than Signal.

In addition, if you wanted something federated with decent crypto, an xmpp server with something as basic as TLS and OTR on the server and clients would be far more usable than matrix.

BlackRing··on Google Is Bringing Electronic IDs to Android
Many states, if not all, provide a free non-drivers ID card.
BlackRing··on Tim Cook: Four-Year Degree Not Necessary to Be Proficient at Coding'
Many companies have incentives or a form of tuition reimbursement/schooling they're willing to pay for to put good people through a college or trade program, with the understanding that they stay at work for the company for X amount of years. It's been a thing for a long time, so the old school thoughts of "no ambition" often times don't have an applicability to today as it used to.

I've seen someone get put through management school for McDonalds and they went from 'order taker' to owning their own franchise in about 10 years. That's ambition.
