Bjartr··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
GP could have just said "poverty" and the vast majority of unconstructive discussion that has followed could have been avoided.

Instead they said "abject poverty" as an emotional emphasizer, and people rightly called them out.

Bjartr··on Parse, Don't Validate – In a Language That Doesn't Want You To
If there were groups that voiced a desire to be informed of that, then it would indeed be courteous to do so.

Bjartr··on Parse, Don't Validate – In a Language That Doesn't Want You To
If nothing else, it should be done as a courtesy to those who would like to avoid such content.

If the result is better for having used AI, why wouldn't an author want to disclose it?

Bjartr··on EU countries move to revive temporary message-scanning regime
One thing I've seen discussed that throws a wrinkle in all of this is the question of whether or not a parent can have control over what their kid can see when they're at a friend's house, and if the answer is no, does that mean something more global like mandatory age verification is necessary to ensure they are still protected.

The argument I've seen goes that even if a parent has complete control over what is available on their home network and on their children's devices, the fact that another parent in their children's friend group does not enforce the same means in practice the amount of control a parent can exert on this problem is effectively zero and a higher-level approach to eradicate this loophole is necessary.

I don't think I agree with that, but that's the strongest case I've come across for implementing such policies.

What I think it really calls for though is a solution in the space of community and communication rather than direct governmental intervention.

Bjartr··on Spying on kids to save kids from spying is stupid
So let's see some of the champions of these systems acknowledge this downside and make the case that they should be built in a way that avoids it and not back down on that when it becomes inconvenient.
Bjartr··on The early hiring funnel is now breaking on both ends
Apprenticeship? Actually spend time working with them on real work.

It's both hard and doesn't scale.

Bjartr··on Understanding the rationale behind a rule when trying to circumvent it
You may already know about it, but for those that aren't aware of it, Windows' Event Tracing system can give a pretty deep view into identifying misbehaving software. It probably doesn't cover everything you wish you could track, and not quite with the level of directness you're asking for, but it's helped me track down weird slowdowns and hangs on my computer on a few different occasions.

There's a third party tool for collecting and examining such traces easier called UIforETW

Bjartr··on Show HN: Nuts – pip/NPM for Java with first-class workspaces, JDK provisioning
Feels more like uv than pip, which is interesting for an ecosystem like Java.

The constant "nuts does A. No B. No C. No D" the readme is exhausting to read ai slop.

Please put your sales pitch up front, then let the rest be plain documentation, don't intermingle the two.

Bjartr··on Uber’s COO says it’s getting harder to justify money spent on tokenmaxxing
> The point of this was always to explore what is possible with AI as quickly as possible.

If that was the intent, the messaging at many companies failed to communicate that. The message was "increase this metric", not "explore this space".

Bjartr··on After Town Bans Flock, Councilmember Crashes Out, Proposes Internet, Phone Ban
The link under "would be introducing measures"[1] has the full statement from the councilmember where he describes the proposals he will be bringing:

> A Modest Proposal for Digital Device Prohibition: A total ban on all cellular and GPS-capable devices for all operations within city limits.

> A Modest Proposal for Total Surveillance Abolition (Residential & Commercial): A total ban on all outward-facing cameras

> A Modest Proposal for Total Municipal and Commercial Decommissioning: A total termination of all internet services and electronic record-keeping

For those that didn't catch the reference, he's alluding to the 1729 publication by Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels

>A Modest Proposal For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick.

Which was a satirical work suggesting that the Irish poor's financial woes could be addressed by eating children, thus feeding people while reducing resource demand.

Bjartr··on Google's AI is being manipulated. The search giant is quietly fighting back
I suspect it's because AI is specifically trained to be good at summarizing stuff, but the easiest way to check if it summarized something accurately is if the summary content matches/contains one or more specific claims from the source(s). With such a focus on accuracy and avoiding hallucination, they may have overfit on "repeat things you find verbatim when asked to summarize".
Bjartr··on U.S. DOJ demands Apple and Google unmask over 100k users of car-tinkering app
Why are they subpoenaing Apple and Google for this information instead of EZ Lynk for their own records of distribution?
Bjartr··on SQL: Incorrect by Construction
Not going past the end of a string or array is C 101 and yet buffer overruns abound. Rust's memory model doesn't do anything you shouldn't already be doing in C, but it provides real value because in practice people are demonstrably bad at doing those things. So would a SQL variant or successor that made these "beginner" mistakes a lot harder to make.

Bjartr··on AI slop is killing online communities
Critically, it doesn't have to be binary trusted/untrusted, and it doesn't have to be statically determined. If Bill vouched for you yesterday and today you are trusting a bunch of discovered bots, that would down weight the amount of trust the network has in Bill a lot more than if he vouched for you did months ago.

The question is whether we can arrive at a set of rules and heuristics and applications of the system that sufficiently incentivizes being a trustworthy member of the network.

Bjartr··on AI slop is killing online communities
That's why a web of trust was suggested. You keep track of who vouched for who and down weight those who vouch for users that prove to be bots. In theory at least. It's certainly more complicated than only that in practice.

By most objective measures it's the largest entertainment franchise in all of history.
