Belphemur··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
May I suggest MealOnADime ? Dine n' Save Find your meal

I'd say to avoid the under 10 branding because of inflation.

Belphemur··on Cognitive Debt: When Velocity Exceeds Comprehension
Cheaper and faster retrieval to be added to the context and discoverable by the agent.

You need more git commands to find the right commit that contains the context you want (either you the human or the LLM burning too many token and time) than just include the right MD file or use grep with proper keywords.

Moreover you could need multiple commits to get the full context, while if you ask the LLM to keep the MD file up to date, you have everything together.

Belphemur··on Google restricting Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers for using OpenClaw
Basically Google is saying: You can't use Gemini with OAuth on other products than Google products (Anti Gravity).

I mean it's fair, just should have been documented properly and the possibility to use Gemini through OAuth restricted with proper scope instead of saying you broke the ToS we ban your 350$/ month account.

Belphemur··on Show HN: A WordPress plugin that rewrites image URLs for near-zero-cost delivery
Great idea and definitely love the aspec of bringing your own worker.

But technically would it be better to have the plugin to any transformation and then have just cloudflare in front of the website raking care of all caching ? (I thought they even provide a WordPress plugin for that).

Also careful with hosting other people content under your domain/service under your name especially with CSAM stuff and other illegal material that your domain becomes the face of.

Belphemur··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
Quite an interesting read Basically saying we're in war time economy with a race to super intelligence. Whichever super power does it first has won the game.

Seeing the last tariffs and what China done about the rare earth minerals (and also the deal the US made with Ukraine for said minerals), the article might have a point that the super power will cripple each other to be the first with the super intelligence. And you also need money for it so tariffs.

Belphemur··on Turning a Decommissioned iPhone into a UniFi Protect Camera
Might be a case of: tried so many things, no idea what fixed it.
Belphemur··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Exactly, especially when Google can revoke your account or keys at anytime.

Basically this give Google the way to blacklist any app you release now, in or out the play store for the sake of "security".

It's just about control and finally squashing the app that aren't to Google taste.

Belphemur··on Lumo: Privacy-first AI assistant
I'd argue you where looking at the wrong tool for the job.

ProtonMail is meant for human to human communication, not for automated emails.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
This is great advice. In our case, we realized we can't trust our memory anymore, it became hard to remember who done it the most.

We wanted both a system that keeps track of it for us. We want to be sure we can both have activities while still not leaving the other parent on the side and rely on feeling.

In our case we also have recurring events like sport in the evening that happens every week at the same time so this help plan around it and not become unbalanced. We already put everything in the calendar :)

Belphemur··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
I just finished building a Night Routine manager for me and my wife that help us keep alternating who does the toddler night routine. I needed this because we both have evening activities and trying to figure how to block day for it while keeping the routine fair was hard.

https://github.com/Belphemur/night-routine

I wanted to build everything from the ground up in Go and have it fully integrated with Google Calendar where we have our family calendar.

It setup full day event with the name of the parent in charge of the night routine. To override a routine, any of us can just rename the event with the the other parent name and the software recalculate the following routines.

I also wanted to give a try to Roo Code in VS Code it only took me 2 days (evenings) to code the whole thing with a proper sqlite db.

Belphemur··on An NFC movie library for my kids
From the article

The Apple TV also supports deep links for other services. Here are examples for the biggest streaming services:

    Netflix (use the regular URL):
        https://www.netflix.com/title/80234304
    Disney+ (use regular URL):
        https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/coco/db9orsI5O4gC
YouTube (use the regular URL with https:// replaced by youtube://)
        Single video: youtube://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah3ezprtgmc
        Playlist: youtube://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v=FkUn86bH34M&list=PLzvRQMJ9HDiQF_5bEErheiAawrJ-2zQoI&pp=iAQB
The only problem with these services is that they will require you to select a profile before the movie/show will start playing. With Plex, you can enable "auto login", but I haven't tried it for the other services.
Belphemur··on Don't defer Close() on writable files (2017)
I still question why defer doesn't support doing exactly that.

After all it's like the go language provide us with a cleanup function that in 99% of the time shouldn't be used unless we manually wrap what it's calling to properly handle error.

In the end, what's the point of defer ?

Belphemur··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
TLDR; People don't trust airline and airport with their carry on.

It's all about being sure your carry on luggage will be in the plane with you and not have to be checked in.

People don't want to pay for that and don't trust the airport to get the luggage to their destination.

Also if you do multi flight with different airlines that don't have code share you'd have to go take your luggage and checked in it again, do security etc ... (Depends on the airport).

Belphemur··on Tell HN: I think there are major issues with Google –> Squarespace domains
Happy with Cloudflare and Porkbun for domains that CF doesn't support.

Both have great API and fair pricing.

Belphemur··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
I wonder if the plan is to merge Beeper and Texts.com.

They both look verify similar in their features. Maybe texts.com for the Apple Ecosystem and Beeper for the Android one ?

After all, Beeper just released their new version of the app for Android.

Belphemur··on Aegis v3.0 – a free, secure and open source 2FA app for Android
Not linked to your phone number. It does encrypted backup that can be synced with Google Android backup (if you want).

Support Steam authenticator (if you follow the guide how to get the key).

You can group the MFA provider in groups that make sense to you.

You're in full control and the keys never leave your device unless you want to.

You can see the keys whenever you decide.

And the list goes on. I've been using it for years and it's the best MFA app on the market.

Belphemur··on Elegant open source project tracking, Trello like but self-hosted
What about installing the right php libs that are expected.

What about keeping the machine up to date to new distro release that inevitably comes with a new version of PHP that isn't compatible with the app ?

Don't get me started on setting properly php-fpm and any other reverse proxy.

All of those issue are gone with docker. You always run the right version of everything as it was intended by the developer (if they are the on that maintain the image)

Belphemur··on Using my new Raspberry Pi to run an existing GitHub Action
Or follow the doc on running docker rootless: https://docs.docker.com/engine/security/rootless/

But in any case I think it's always better to do docker in docker for security. Also it help control what version of docker is used by the agent and it can then be a different one than the one on the host.

Belphemur··on Using my new Raspberry Pi to run an existing GitHub Action
Sounds like outdated advice from the time before they implemented approval for running action from PR of untrusted people.

In the past, people could modify the GitHub action workflow and run crypto miners on the agents.

But since GitHub changed the default for PR where the actions aren't run anymore that killed that attack vector.

Belphemur··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
As much as I agree with the sentiment of your comment, the part "Women do yoga" is quite reductive and can easily be interpreted as "women can't be that type of person" which I disagree with.
Belphemur··on Stripe live dashboard
Wow love the 80s style :D

Also there is a parallax effect if you swipe that is really well done.

When I was a student working at Atos Worldline, Belgium, they had a similar dashboard in the entrance of the building with the number of transactions and money transferred around Xmas.

Belphemur··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
They should have gone further like .NET 8.0 with a full class abstraction for datetime provider: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/whats-new/dotn...

This is 10x better and helps to assure the code can be unit tested with providing the exact date we want in the exact format/timezone

Belphemur··on ProtonMail is building a blockchain feature for email validation
I have a hard time understanding the link between the feature of a key server and block chain.

This is a great idea to simplify PGP, love it, but nothing to do with block chain at all.

Basically a public key server where all recipients have their public key available to send email too and have proton mail use it automatically.

Belphemur··on Dockerized local and offline backing up of PostgreSQL with rotation, compression
I've been using Borgmatic for this.

It does everything, uses pg_dump under the hood, and adds the output as files for Borg.

Borg then takes care of encryption, incremental and also bit rot. Best solution ever in my book.

Also you can directly restore the db with Borgmatic.

https://torsion.org/borgmatic/docs/how-to/backup-your-databa...

Belphemur··on Pixel 8 Pro
Not really, I have a Pixel 4a 5G that doesn't come with magic eraser but because I pay for Google One, they gave me access to it.

So I doubt there are really any limitations on the hardware themselves or that you absolutely need the new version. Google just paywalling the features.

I bet you all those will be available very soon for Google One subscribers.

Belphemur··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
It really depends on the video, and the brand sponsoring for me.

I had enough of Raycon, Raid Legend and other bullcrap VPNs. Especially when those sponsors got greedy by asking a 2 minute and on a 8 minutes video. That's a quarter of it.

So I don't feel bad anymore for sponsorblock.

Belphemur··on Kopia: Fast and secure open-source backup software
Not really dumb. I do use them too but with Borgbackup on the top (since they support it natively).

I found Borgmatic ( https://torsion.org/borgmatic/ ) to be the best way to run my backups. It takes care of everything from pruning to verifying the checksum etc... and it integrates with some monitoring (like cronitor).

So Borgmatic + rsync.net is the best combo

Belphemur··on Win11Debloat is a simple script that removes pre-installed windows bloatware
I have a love and hate relationship with this type of tools.

On one hand, I want to remove all that I don't need and keep my privacy on my computer; on the other I don't want to have to fiddle and google why the Windows update failed.

Because, I stopped counting how many times one of those registry changes/app removal actually broke Windows update.

In the end, I just run other software like StartAllBack that I can easily uninstall if it causes issues when updating Windows.

Belphemur··on The Long History of Nobody Wants to Work Anymore
Always wondered if it was an actual Ancient Time quote.

Doesn't seem like it :

> It was crafted by a student, Kenneth John Freeman, for his Cambridge dissertation published in 1907. Freeman did not claim that the passage under analysis was a direct quotation of anyone; instead, he was presenting his own summary of the complaints directed against young people in ancient times.
