Belphemur··on Google Docs New Feature: Pageless
That's one of the reason why I'm so happy with my Boox e-ink tablet.

Anytime I need to read big documents I just export them and put it on it. Easy for the eyes and easy to take note on the document.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: Is Google phasing out Authenticator/TOTP?
I replaced long ago the Google Authenticator by Aegis on Android.

You can actually do backup of your keys (encrypted).

Also they reverse engineered the steam Authenticator, so one less app to have on my phone.

Belphemur··on How to set up a blog with Hugo and Cloudflare, and why you should
Or disable copy pasting (especially on forms)
Belphemur··on SendGrid appends a tracking pixel even when disabled
I used them at the previous company I worked. They were just launching their products.

They have the best support I ever encountered, we were having weird delivery issue on some specific clients and they help us debug the whole problem.

They have more than fair pricing and actually do a manual verification when you want to start using them (and not just testing with your own domain).

Their hobbyist tier is 100 mails per month. No credit card required.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Don't get me started on zoom...

How about making an app that actually work on Linux ? That doesn't take 200% CPU when you're in a meeting.

The same on windows, it's such a badly optimized application with memory leak all over the place...

I hate it with all my guts.

Belphemur··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
I disagree. The culture of staying silent when you know the attack doesn't have the full picture is worst.

I still think anything about PR erode our society in general. We prefer to hide, avoid telling the truth and discard any transparency.

I welcome the well formulated argument of dang. It contains his point of view and multiple missing facts about the situation.

By having both point of view and the different fact we can make our own mind about the situation. This is what critical thinking is about.

Belphemur··on NitroPhone 2/Pro with 4.5 years of software updates
Does anybody knows this company or use any of its products?

Because this looks like a scam or another company providing security service for criminals (or will be mostly used by them).

Belphemur··on Companies that had successful pivots
Technically they didn't ... Facebook/Meta did.

I remember when I had to pay 1€ per year for What's App that was only 8 years ago...

Belphemur··on Companies that had successful pivots
Wizard of the coast is mostly a publishing company. I think the playing cards came later.
Belphemur··on Id Software Is Trying to Stop a Man Who Wants to Name His Band 'Doomscroll'
Ars/Wired has a better article about this: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/11/dooms-creator-go...

Basically, they just don't want their brand Doom to be associated with the band "progressive thrash metal" music.

It's not the first time this happens and it does make sense. In another occurence about a podcast named Garden of Doom, they found an agreement.

> Jeff, who tried to trademark Garden of Doom, his podcast, says he came to an agreement with the lawyers representing Id Software; he says he just can’t make a movie or video game called Garden of Doom.

Belphemur··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Maybe they're betting on the donor dying before having to start the project, and hope to keep the money ?
Belphemur··on Facebook Renames to Meta
Lots of PR Bullsh*t here:

> Connection is evolving and so are we. > The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.

In other words, nothing will change, just the name.

Belphemur··on Imgur Acquired by Medialab
I thought exactly the same.

It doesn't bode well for Imgur future. They don't care about their acquisition. It's to wonder why are they doing it in the first place.

The company doesn't have any public information either. All I can find is a LONG list of job openings: https://jobs.lever.co/medialab

Weird list if they are just "investors".

Belphemur··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
Edit: I don't approve that line of reasoning, but I think that what the author meant.
Belphemur··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
To play devil advocate.

On one side, Brave come with an adblocker that will remove any ads from the website you're visiting. On the other, they provide their own ads through the reward program.

So it can be seen as "replacing website ads by its own".

I approve that line of reasoning, but I think that what the author meant.

Belphemur··on Apollo-Soyuz Mission: When the Space Race Ended (2020)
As an avid watcher of the show, I really thought it was just an "invention" of the show.

I'm really happy to learn it actually happened! This is amazing!

We would need more event like this these days ...

Belphemur··on .NET NuGet Package Validation Broken: Certificate Expired
Related to a change of certificate done in November it seems: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/nuget/microsoft-author-signin...
Belphemur··on .NET NuGet Package Validation Broken: Certificate Expired
It's weird that Microsoft didn't use any timestamping for the NuGet package. This wouldn't have been a direct issue then.
Belphemur··on .NET NuGet Package Validation Broken: Certificate Expired
From the issue:

> So, there is in deed certificate issue. If one tries to execute "nuget verify -All <msnuget.nupkg>" there is clear evidence:

Subject Name: CN=Microsoft Corporation, O=Microsoft Corporation, L=Redmond, S=Washington, C=US SHA1 hash: F404000FB11E61F446529981C7059A76C061631E SHA256 hash: 3F9001EA83C560D712C24CF213C3D312CB3BFF51EE89435D3430BD06B5D0EECE Issued by: CN=DigiCert SHA2 Assured ID Code Signing CA, OU=www.digicert.com, O=DigiCert Inc, C=US Valid from: 26.02.2018 01:00:00 to 27.01.2021 13:00:00

So MS cert expired today at 13:00

Belphemur··on An rsync.net account is the swiss army knife of cloud storage
I've been using Rsync.net for 2 years now with borgbackup.

Never had any issue with their service, always above board.

I had to recover my backup and didn't have any issue. Thanks for the great service.

Belphemur··on Retiring Tucows Downloads
And to add to it, it seems that none of them hear of keyboard shortcuts.
Belphemur··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
They didn't do a press release yet for it.

This is the email users directly received.

Belphemur··on .NET 5.0
Does anybody knows if .NET 5.0 will be included in Windows as a Windows Update as the .NET Framework ?
Belphemur··on Nokia secures $14.1m NASA funding to roll out 4G on the Moon
It reminds me of the show Away on Netflix where the astronauts are going to Mars by doing a pit stop to the moon first.

The idea that the could video call NASA with clear picture or even so it with their loved ones felt a contemporary science fiction.

Again, it seems we're getting there :)

Belphemur··on The life and death of email read tracking
The default setting for such feature is to ask the user.

It makes the whole interaction more creepy, moreover, I don't think that a lot of webclient support it (or even Smartphone apps).

It's kind of a dying feature.

Belphemur··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
I agree it doesn't make any sense ...

They just sold their Mixer platform to Facebook.

If they can't manage correctly a game streaming platform, I don't see them be able to take on a video social network one.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: Any good FOSS alternative to Google's reCAPTCHA?
Latest version of recaptcha doesn't even require any solving.

It just analyse the traffic and give the site owner a score [0.0 - 1.0] on how sure they are the visitor is human.

They don't explain how they calculate the score, but from my usage it's pretty accurate. They suggest to consider at first anything higher than 0.5 to be a human.

Belphemur··on Mozilla’s plan to fix internet privacy
I'm pretty sure they rely on user agent in the server logs.

Sure you can spoof it, but it would be the same for the stat counter.

Belphemur··on Comcast Is Lobbying Against DNS Encryption
More and more website rely on CDN. Which mean, more and more website share the same IP. This is how CloudFlare works. They proxy the full traffic through their server to your server.

If you can't have the host/DNS request, you won't be able to know what website is visited.

Belphemur··on Comcast Is Lobbying Against DNS Encryption
That's actually the setup I have today.

However, it's easier to setup DoH/DoT than to setup wireguard VPN. Especially when setting it up for mobile devices.
