Google made it too easy to make in app purchase.

If you don't pay attention, when purchasing an app or anything else the first time, you enable by default the "fast workflow" that doesn't require authorization for the following purchase.

It's also hard to find the setting again in the play store app.

All is made to reduce friction when purchasing... Which doesn't align with the goal of most parents.

Belphemur··on Potentially millions of Android TVs and phones come with malware preinstalled
I think it's because people treat the news of an infection of their network the same way they do when learning they have an STI.

Deny and it can't be your fault.

Belphemur··on Poll: How many logins/accounts do you have?
Being using password manager since it made its apparition in Firefox.

In total, I collected more or less 1500 website/logins.

Funny how most of those websites don't exist anymore.

The idea that your job should be taking over your life is dangerous.

You work to live not the other way.

Family is more important than a job. So yeah, giving only 20-30% of your life to your job and keeping the rest for your family makes more sense than the other way around.

Belphemur··on Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is resigning
From what creators are saying Dan isn't the best choice either. He doesn't understand the industry from their point of view. Also he's the one that spearheaded the whole 70/30 split replaced by 50/50 split without any discussion in the matter.

I wonder how a simple individual can acquire control on a ccTLD.

I always thought they would need to be vetted by the government of that the ccTLD represents.

Belphemur··on Transmission v4.0
I don't think there is any benefit in switching, no.

You can even set proper limits in qbittorrent for your workflow to stop the seeding after X minutes.

Belphemur··on Transmission v4.0
I was a long time user of transmission, but when I redid my *arr setup I devided to go to qbittorrent.

qBittorrent can handle way more simultaneous connections and torrents than transmission. It doesn't slow down, it supports tags, categories and even custom UI (vue-qbittorrent is awesome).

I'm not going back, especially when you have great docker images with WireGuard integrated in them.

Personally, I decided to use CloudFlare tunnels to open the services that I need to the internet.

But lately, I've also been instead using Tailscale, no need for VPS then, just having the client on each device that needs to have access to the machine (plus it can handle ssh now).

I realized I spend enough time on different projects on my home lab that the "open service to be accessible everywhere" part isn't worth my time or interest anymore. I'm glad for Tailscale and CloudFlare.

I mean, if he takes the same approach to people as to microservices...

Cut it before understanding what it does, I don't think anything good is going to come from this.

Remember, cutting off the MFA microservice ?

Withings is great if you're looking for "health" watch but not really good as fitness tracker.

For years, I used my steel HR (got a weird one branded Nokia because they had purchased Withings only to resell Withings to the founder a year later), loved the sleep tracking, health report etc... But the activity tracking wasn't the best, especially running.

However the battery's life is out of this world. I loved the mix between tech and good old watch.

Belphemur··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
If I remember correctly, after Fitbit purchased pebble they released the Versa line up that had some similar functionalities.

However it looks like Google is killing that in newer iterations...

Belphemur··on Europe prepares to rewrite the rules of the Internet
That's a very bad title.

It's more inline with bringing back an open internet and transparency in how our data is used by the different platforms.

While also forcing them to collaborate, to let us be able to switch easily from one product of company A to the next product of company B.

This is great for consumers and will help reducing the power of the techbopoly we have today. If it works.

Belphemur··on DontBuyDell.com
My experience with Dell with their laptop has been the worst at work.

Who thought it's a good idea to put a Intel power hungry heat generator in a laptop with no airflow or proper cooling for enterprise product ?

I had a coworker that nearly burn his leg when having the laptop on them and coding with Spotify in the background.

The thing would thermal throttle like crazy and turn into an helicopter because it has only one 50mm fan to try to cool down the machine...

We had to buy stands to help with the airflow because if you put it on a desk it would block the intake.

It cost the same price than a MacBook M1 Pro with worse performance, worse thermal and it's so loud.

I'll never want a Dell laptop ever again.

Also don't get me started on their power delivery circuit that overheat when the laptop is used while charging or the proprietary batteries.

Belphemur··on The Pixel Watch is official: $349, good looks, and a four-year-old SoC
That or Fitbit get rebranded as Google Watch and now you have Pixel Watch and Google Watch.

Then they merge the two into "Watch" the new alphabet company.

Not like they didn't do that before with their chat apps.

Belphemur··on How criminals are using jammers, deauthers to disrupt WiFi security cameras
Most likely in the terms and condition.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: What games are you having fun with?
Roadwarden. A little Indie gem, full text rpg in a Fantasy world with a nice pixel style.

It embodies the feeling I got when I was "reading" book "Choose your own adventure books" but with proper inventory management, music and quest book instead of a piece of paper.

Belphemur··on Ask HN: How do you deal with the emotions of customer support?
To add to 1, also realize you're not always right.

I built a feature in my program that I thought was a good idea. I was stubborn, took it personally and couldn't see why people didn't see the value in it.

I kept getting support request on discord about it, "how do I disable this ** thing" etc... It's not easy to not take it personally.

Then I took a step back and I saw the feature from the point of view of the user, it made sense that they complained about it, that it was interrupting their workflow and not adding much value.

I decided to stop having it enabled by default.

Belphemur··on Advice needed for backing up and hosting large amount of files
Usually every node that share a folder need to have syncthing installed.

The only way to make it work with rsync.net would be to mount a sshfs on a machine running syncthing.

Not sure if the performance will be good.

Maybe with Rclone ?

Belphemur··on Cloudflare outage on June 21, 2022
It's interesting that in 2022 we still have network issues caused by wrong order of rules.

Everybody at one time experiences the dreaded REJECT not being at the end of the rule stack but just too early.

Kudos to CF for such a good explanation of what caused the issue.

Belphemur··on uBlacklist – Block specific sites from appearing in Google search results
I thought the same at first. Then I thought on an annual budget and price.

Does Kagi worth $120 per year for me ? Yes, yes it does, it's barely nothing compared to the value of having proper search result. I checked ... I make more than 50 searches per day...

$120 yearly is nothing compared to other expenses that I have like my broadband internet around $70 per month for it...

Belphemur··on uBlacklist – Block specific sites from appearing in Google search results
I'd argue all Q&A services devolve into madness when they get mainstream.

Before Quora we had yahoo answer and before that surely something else.

As soon as they get mainstream the quality of question and answer goes down. Those systems only work with well defined constraints either on the subject of the question or the validation of the expertise of the people answering.

All of those platform just open the valve with close to no moderation. We can see the same with Reddit and big sub Reddit.

Belphemur··on uBlacklist – Block specific sites from appearing in Google search results
Being using it through the beta and moved toward their annual subscription :)

Also you can give more importance to some website in the search result, create your own search template.

It's so feature rich, and to make things easier they provide and extension to set your default search engine for you.

Belphemur··on User Disengagement
We have the same issue in the B2B company I worked at.

Currently we're implementing strategies to reduce the barrier of entry by making the product onboard the new customer. We just started and we still have a long way to go but I think it's the right solution.

Reducing the cost of onboarding for the customer and making it easy to invite other member should help avoid churn.

Belphemur··on Postmark has been acquired by ActiveCampaign
I agree with you, such a bittersweet taste in the mouth.

I don't think that a Marketing company is the right type of company to run Postmark.

Postmark care about deliverability not about "engagement". Everything is about being sure your mail get to your clients not about how to craft marketing campaign from their product.

How much do you bet ActiveCampaign is going to add some email editor and campaign management feature to Postmark ?

I truly hope they won't touch their acquisition and let it run how it always has instead of adding feature that doesn't make sense with the product just to compete with MailChimp and other big names.

Belphemur··on How to get kids to do chores: Does the Maya method work? (2018)
Dishwasher in the US and Canada are using hot water instead of cold water that is managed by the dishwasher.

Because of the quality of the water heater and the time it take for hot water to reach the dishwasher you have inconsistent washing.

Also most US brand of dishwasher rely on plastic components so I'm pretty sure they can't heat as well as full aluminium one.
